46% of terrorist offenders in Britain had their origins in south Asia including 28% who had Pakistani heritage

After Pakistan, the next most common origin for terrorist offenders in Britain was Somalia, accounting for 6%, demonstrating a growing threat from East Africa. It was found that 16% were from families originally from East Africa and 12.5% from North Africa. A total of 5.5% were from the Caribbean and 4% from the Middle East. Of those that committed offenses, 32% had a direct link to one or more proscribed organizations, most prominently al-Qaeda and the British group al-Muhajiroun. Seven out of Britain’s eight major bomb plot cells contained individual members with direct links to al-Qaeda. It was found that those of Pakistani and Bangladeshi origin were most likely to be associated with proscribed organizations.
