Mexico's government says the level of drug-related violence in the country is still growing

The national intelligence chief, Guillermo Valdes, said more than 28,000 people had been killed since 2006. The figure is a sharp increase on the previous estimate of 24,800 dead. Most of the dead are thought to be victims of clashes between rival gangs.
