American Jewish groups lobbying the Nixon White House on behalf of their Soviet brethren got under Henry Kissinger’s skin in demanding intense pressure on Moscow to the point that he denounced them to a White House colleague as self-serving bastards

According to transcripts released by the State Department, Kissinger said to White House official Leonard Garment: “Is there a more self-serving group of people than the Jewish community?” Kissinger is Jewish. Garment, also Jewish, replied: “None in the world.” At this point, Kissinger was quoted as saying “What the hell do they think they are accomplishing?” Kissinger went on: “You can’t even tell bastards anything in confidence because they’ll leak it.”
