Britain: A juror with a Muslim name who smoked cannabis during a break in a rape trial has been fined for contempt of court

Cash-and-carry worker Shezad Hussain, 26, was seen puffing on a joint outside Bolton Crown Court. An alarmed juror in another case spotted what Hussain was up to in the lunchtime break and collected the discarded stub as evidence before reporting him to court police. The trial was halted and Hussain was discharged from the jury and hauled before the judge – who had been about to start summing up the evidence. At Manchester Crown Court Hussain, of Hamel Street, Bolton admitted contempt of court before Recorder Nicholas Clarke QC, who had been presiding over the disrupted trial.
