A 22-year-old Hispanic has been indicted for violently sexually assaulting a woman in a West Village stairwell

Ivan Ramos has been charged with first-degree rape, criminal sexual act, assault and criminal possession of stolen property. According to court documents, Ramos approached a 29-year-old woman on the street at about 6 a.m. on April 15, 2012. The woman had lost some of her belongings, including her cell phone and cash from her wallet, and Ramos convinced her to give him her ATM card so that he could help her withdraw cash and pay for a taxi. When Ramos later refused to help the woman call a cab, she asked him to take her to the nearest police precinct, authorities say. Instead, he led her to a dark and deserted stairwell in a building on Perry Street and violently sexually assaulted her for 15 minutes, according to court documents. "The defendant savagely preyed on a vulnerable victim while posing as someone who wanted to help her,” said District Attorney Cy Vance. "Our Sex Crimes Unit is committed to investigating cases of sexual assault in Manhattan and taking the depraved perpetrators, like this defendant, off our streets."
