Violent crime and diversity
The 10 safest states in terms of violent crime are Vermont (99.3 incidents per 100,000 residents), Maine (127.8), Wyoming (195.5), New Hampshire (196.1), Virginia (196.2), Kentucky (211.6), Idaho (212.2), Utah (215.6), Rhode Island (219.2) and Minnesota (229.1). The 10 most dangerous states, based on reported violent crimes per 100,000 residents are Alaska (635.8 crimes per 100,000), Nevada (635.6), Tennessee (608), New Mexico (597), Florida (540.5), Louisiana (515), South Carolina (498), Delaware (489), Arkansas (480) and Maryland (446). The safest states tend to be less diverse than the most dangerous ones.
