Of the 5% of the general population who donate blood, only 1 out of 10 are African American or Hispanic

Blood that closely matches a patient’s is less likely to be rejected by the patient and can mean fewer complications after a transfusion. Genetically-similar blood is superior for people who need repeated blood transfusions, for conditions such as sickle cell anemia which tends to affect people of African ancestry.
