An illegal immigrant who made a mockery of Britain’s deportation system has been jailed for life for battering a man to death

Jaswinder Singh, who was also wanted in Germany, had been in and out of prison and immigration detention centers for almost a decade. But he was repeatedly freed without being removed and even granted bail by immigration judges. At one stage, Singh was among 1,000 foreign criminals released from prison without being considered for deportation in a scandal which led to the sacking of Home Secretary Charles Clarke in 2006. In the latest case, Singh, 60, attacked homeless 31 year-old Harbarjan Singh and two friends with a metal bar as they slept in a cemetery in Ilford, Essex. The unemployed builder from India lay in wait for the victims to get revenge for being beaten up a week earlier. Singh, who used 14 aliases and gave false dates of birth, came to Britain illegally in 1995 from either Pakistan or India before moving to Germany. In 2000 he was jailed there for smashing a beer glass into the face of his then girlfriend and failing to pay maintenance for his son. After serving two-thirds of his sentence he was released on license. He was supposed to stay in Germany, but sneaked back to Britain. The British Border Agency found him and began trying to deport him in 2002, but the process was drawn out and in 2004, 2006 and 2010 he was jailed for grievous bodily harm, actual bodily harm and assault. Police said that each time he was imprisoned the deportation process was stopped and had to be started again on his release. Singh was jailed for life with a minimum of 24 years before parole for one count of murder and two of attempted murder.

Joseph Hayes, 48, is charged with aggravated assault. Police say that Hayes brought a gun to the party because his children didn't get any ice cream or cake. A police affidavit says that Hayes became upset and began yelling at the victim. Police say that he went to his apartment and returned a short time later with a small black handgun tucked into the back of his pants. Hayes approached the host, lifted up his shirt and said, "I ain't scared to go to jail, just take care of my kids." Hayes' bond is set at $30,000.

Only 43% of African-American men aged 18 to 29 have a full-time job

And less than half of all white men will have full-time jobs in 2018, according to post-2000 trends hidden in federal population and workforce data. At least 15 million legal and illegal immigrants, mostly young and unskilled, entered the country between 1994 and 2007. The full-time employment population ratio for white men fell from 62% in 2000 to 55% by 2010. That’s a drop of 7% in 10 years, or 0.7% a year. If that drop continues at the same rate, less than half of whites will be working by 2018. If part-time workers are included, the ratio started at 74% in 2000 and fell to 67% in 2010. Among all African-American men aged more than 16, the full-time ratio fell from 56.9% in 2000 to 46.4% in 2010. The inclusion of part-time work bumps the ratio upwards, but the ratio still fell from 67% to 58% in 2010.

A Somali man convicted of slaughtering his family has been sentenced to life in prison

In 2006, Said Biyad beat and raped his wife and then went to the rooms of his four children, ages 2 through 8, and slashed their throats repeatedly. The death penalty was considered an option in the case until both sides agreed to have a judge decide Biyad's fate rather than a jury. In April 2011, the judge convicted Biyad of murder, attempted murder and other charges. He sentenced Biyad to life with the possibility of parole.

A black man who took his girlfriend at gunpoint to a medical clinic and tried to force her to have an abortion, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison

Dominic Holt-Reid pleaded guilty in April 2011 to attempted murder, abduction and illegally possessing a gun. The Columbus resident reportedly became enraged in April 2010 after his then-girlfriend Yolanda Burgess refused to go through with an abortion. After dropping their 5-year-old son off at school, he pulled a gun out and forced her to drive to the clinic. The clinic staff called police after Burgess passed them a note saying that she had been threatened and didn't want to go through with the procedure. He was arrested in the clinic parking lot with a .45 handgun.

A 25-year-old Latino gang member convicted in the racially motivated gang murder of a black bowling alley employee has been sentenced to life in prison without parole

Martin Sotelo, a member of the Canoga Park Alabama gang, was sentenced in connection with the fatal drive-by shooting of James Shamp. Van Nuys Superior Court Judge Martin Herscovitz also ordered Sotelo to pay $15,916 in restitution for the burial of his victim and mental health costs of the victim's family. A jury in April 2011 found Sotelo guilty of first-degree murder with two special circumstance allegations — murder due to the victim's race and murder in a drive-by shooting. He was the last of four defendants to face charges in the case. He was also found guilty on other allegations, including evading officers after the shooting and second-degree robbery related to a separate incident. The additional charges resulted in a sentence of 40 years to life. Shamp, 48, a married father of two, was taking out the trash at the Canoga Bowl when Latino gang members pulled up in a car and fired the shots, prosecutors said. Sotelo was behind the wheel. Deputy Dist. Atty. Daniel Akemon of the Hardcore Gang Division said that Sotelo helped fellow gang member Richard Bordelon gun down Shamp "in cold blood because of the color of his skin, in a display of senseless violence and a complete disregard for human life." Akemon argued that Sotelo had stopped the vehicle so Bordelon could take aim like a sniper. Bordelon's bullet struck Shamp "right through the heart," Akemon said. In March 2010, Herscovitz sentenced Bordelon to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus 47 years to life, after he admitted being the gunman. Bordelon was also ordered to pay $14,386 in restitution. A juvenile defendant, who was 15 at the time, also reached a deal with prosecutors and was sentenced on a juvenile conspiracy charge. A third defendant, Orlando Perez, a 25-year-old Latino, pleaded no contest to a charge of accessory after the fact to murder and was sentenced to three years and four months in state prison. Akemon told jurors in closing arguments that Sotelo and Bordelon were out that evening looking to earn their respective nicknames of "Outlaw" and "Psycho."

An illegal immigrant will spend three years in prison for having sexual contact on three occasions with a girl beginning when she was 12 years old

Ignacio Ocampo-Roldan, 42, has pleaded no contest in Eau Claire County Court to a felony count of first-degree sexual assault of a child. Judge Benjamin Proctor ordered that Ocampo-Roldan spend two years on extended supervision following his release from prison. As conditions of supervision, Ocampo-Roldan cannot have contact with children. Ocampo-Roldan is an illegal alien. The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service has told local prosecutors that Ocampo-Roldan likely will be deported after his sentence is completed. The assaults occurred between Thanksgiving 2010 and New Year's Day 2011 and involved varying degrees of sexual contact.

The reversal of fortunes for the two groups is echoed nationwide, where blacks have fallen to 12.6% of the total U.S. population of 308.7 million, and Hispanics have risen to 16.3%. Hispanics are also outpacing blacks economically: their median household income rose 21.6% in the decade to $40,946, compared with $34,445 for blacks. This shouldn't be too surprising since Hispanics have higher IQ's than blacks.

A black mother faces up to 45 years in jail after being found guilty of killing her son in a botched exorcism

Latisha Lawson, 31, forced her two-year-old son Jezaih to drink a vile mixture of olive oil and vinegar as part of a ritual to drive the Devil from his body. As he choked on the liquid she held her hand over his mouth to stop him vomiting and crushed his neck. Jurors heard that Lawson had wanted to drive a demon called "Marzon" from her son's body. She had become convinced that her son was possessed and blamed herself because she did not profess her love for God while she was pregnant. Lawson and another woman, who also believed her children were possessed, fed the mixture to four children at their home. Three of the children immediately vomited up the mixture, but Lawson held her hand over her son's mouth to keep the liquid down. An autopsy ruled that he had died from having his neck compressed. Police said that Lawson kept Jezaih's body in a plastic sack for more than a year after his November 2009 death until she was arrested on December 21, 2010. Lawson told jurors that she was convinced her son was possessed by demons as his behavior had changed. She said that she kept her son's body as she was convinced her son would be resurrected after his death. Lawson was convicted of murder as well as charges of neglect and battery of her four year old daughter. She faces at least 45 years in prison when she is sentenced.

A Hispanic handyman who was supposed to be fixing a woman's stove raped the 20-year-old instead

The rapist is an illegal immigrant and he was sent to the home by the woman's landlord. The attack happened while the woman's 15-month-old son was there and crying the entire time, deputies said. Arturo Raamos-Velasco was arrested and charged with that crime, Sheriff Neil Elks said. But the sheriff's office says that Raamos-Velasco is in the country illegally and is concerned a background check was never done on him. Raamos-Velasco is being charged with second-degree rape. Even though his bond was set at $200,000, he is also being held on an immigration hold and will not be released from jail on any type of bond.

Israeli and Palestinian officials said that the attackers were Jewish settlers, retaliating for the dismantling of unauthorized Jewish settler housing nearby. Villagers said that they awoke for morning prayers to find smoke billowing from their mosque. The slogan "Price tag, Aley Ayin" was scrawled in Hebrew on the wall. Aley Ayin was an unauthorized settler outpost, which the Israeli authorities cleared recently. There has been a pattern of recent attacks, dubbed "price tag" on Palestinian property by radical Jewish settlers, after the authorities acted to curb their illegal expansion.

A New York judge has sentenced a Haitian mother to 17 years in jail after she set her six-year-old daughter ablaze in a voodoo ritual

Queens Supreme Court Justice Richard Buchter scolded Marie Lauradin for lying to police and probation officers about how her daughter, Frantzcia Saintil, was set on fire, leaving her with life-altering scars over 25% of her body. After her February 2009 arrest, Lauradin told police that she accidentally spilled a pot of boiling water on the child when the youngster came up from behind her. She also told probation officers that she was rubbing alcohol on the child to soothe a fever when a candle ignited, setting the child ablaze. Lauradin, 31, has admitted to stripping the child naked and pouring an accelerant over her head and in a circle on the floor, a voodoo rite she described as "loa". Prosecutors said that Lauradin set the girl on fire and failed to get her medical attention for another 24 hours. Assistant District Attorney Leigh Bishop said that the child has scars on her face that her classmates tease her about. Frantzcia's foster mother told prosecutors that the child has been acting angrily toward other children as she adjusts to her disfigurement and life without her mother. After the attack, Frantzcia was placed in a medically-induced coma so that doctors could treat the burns that caused her skin to peel off her torso, legs and face. Lauradin's Haitian-born mother, Sylvenie Thessier, 72, has been sentenced to up to three years in prison for reckless endangerment for failing to get her granddaughter medical attention.

A Hispanic faces child sex abuse and incest charges after assaulting several family members over a number of years

Alfredo Sierra, 62, is charged with eight counts of statutory sodomy, three counts of child molestation, three counts of incest and one count of statutory rape. According to prosecutors, the victims, ages 11, 9 and 7, were victims of sexual abuse over several years. Police say that the victim's mother told them that the children had refused to visit Sierra's home because of the abuse. Prosecutors say that Sierra admitted the abuse during questioning after being arrested.

With an interpreter by his side, 31-year-old Ruben Garcia pleaded guilty to first degree rape. The plea agreement means that Garcia avoids a jury trial, but he won't avoid a lengthy prison term. The maximum sentence for rape in the 1st degree in South Dakota is life in prison. In exchange for a shorter sentence, Garcia pleaded guilty to raping the girl and now awaits sentencing. "There's a mandatory minimum of 15 years and under the plea agreement he's facing up to 40 years actually," Minnehaha County State's Attorney Aaron McGowan said. Sioux Falls police say that Garcia raped the child while a seven-year-old watched it happen. The children later told their mother who contacted authorities. Garcia must undergo a mandatory psycho-sexual evaluation, which the court will use in determining a prison sentence.

Researchers say that minority youth astonishingly spend more than half their day consuming media content, a rate that's four and a half hours greater than their white counterparts. Mutairi said that during a recent visit to Mecca, she asked Saudi muftis – Muslim religious scholars – what the Islamic ruling was on owning sex slaves. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows that 54% of likely U.S. voters think that Obama is more ideologically liberal than they are, while only 13% view him as more conservative. Twenty-four percent (24%) say that their political views are about the same as Obama's. The number who see Obama as more liberal than they are stayed at 57% in three-out-of-four previous surveys conducted since August of 2010. That number climbed to 61% in late February 2011. The number who view Obama as more conservative ranged from 9% to 12% in that same period. The number of voters who say that they share about the same political views as Obama ties the lowest result measured since August 2010. Forty-five percent (45%) of Democratic voters, however, say that their views are about the same as Obama’s, although that ties the lowest finding to date. The number of Democrats who felt this way peaked at 60% in late February 2011. Eighty-four percent of Republicans and 57% of voters not affiliated with either major political party feel that Obama is more liberal than they are. Twenty percent of unaffiliated voters share about the same ideological views as Obama.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll shows that 48% of people questioned say that they approve of how Obama is handling his duties in the White House, down six points from late May 2011. An equal 48% say that they disapprove of how Obama's performing, up three points from late last month. The poll indicates a slight deterioration among Democrats and independent voters, with Obama's approval rating among Democrats down three points to 82% and down five points among independents to 42%. Forty-eight percent say that another Great Depression is likely to occur in the next year - the highest that figure has ever reached. The survey also indicates that just under half live in a household where someone has lost a job or are worried that unemployment may hit them in the near future. According to the survey, more than eight in ten Americans say that the economy is in poor shape, a number that has stubbornly remained at that level since March 2011.

Gunmen have attacked a drugs treatment center in northern Mexico, killing 11 people and injuring two others

Police said that at least two armed men burst into the center in Torreon, in Coahuila state, and opened fire. Dozens of people have been killed over the past few years at such centers, in what officials say are often revenge attacks on rival drug gang members. In another development, officials say that 429 bodies have been found since April 2011 in graves in Durango and Tamaulipas.

Over about 15 years, blacks were assaulted, chased and robbed, their property vandalized, in a "crime spree to drive African Americans out of the city of Azusa," said U.S. Atty. Andre Birotte Jr. Authorities have announced that a federal grand jury had indicted 51 people associated with the Azusa 13 gang in terrorizing blacks in the San Gabriel Valley city of more than 48,000. The campaign was partly motivated by racial prejudice. But it also grew from orders by leaders of the Mexican Mafia prison gang to organize Azusa 13's narcotics business by eliminating competition so they could have a monopoly on drug sales. Authorities said that the campaign went beyond drug deals to harassment of black residents because of their race. "We're brainwashed to think that if we let a black family in, then their [gang] cousins are going to come from Compton," said one former Azusa gang member who grew up in the neighborhood. The 24-count indictment is the latest in several prosecutions alleging that Latino gangs in Southern California attacked blacks to get them to move out of neighborhoods the gangs controlled. Many of those incidents occurred in the late 1990s and early 2000s in neighborhoods with histories of gang problems. A few years ago, federal prosecutors charged members of a Latino gang with a campaign to push blacks out of the unincorporated Florence-Firestone neighborhood that resulted in 20 homicides over a decade. In the Harbor Gateway district of L.A., a Latino gang was accused of targeting blacks including 14-year-old Cheryl Green, whose death became a rallying point against such attacks. Members of the Avenues, a Latino gang in Highland Park, were convicted of a series of assaults and killings in the early 1990s.

A Mexican man linked to one of the largest marijuana seizures in U.S. history has pleaded guilty to drug charges

Daniel Navarro entered his plea in federal court in San Diego. Prosecutors say that Navarro oversaw the transport of 50 tons of marijuana through two sophisticated cross-border underground tunnels into California. The tunnels and drug loads were discovered in November 2010. Navarro faces a maximum penalty of life in prison and a minimum sentence of 10 years.

An Indian doctor has scammed Medicaid out of $700,000 by prescribing HIV medications for people who didn't have the virus

Dr. Suresh Hemrajani pleaded not guilty to grand larceny, health care fraud and other charges. According to a Manhattan judge's summary of the allegations, middlemen recruited patients on the street and brought them to Hemrajani's office, sometimes 10 at a time. The 57-year-old doctor prescribed medications for the virus that causes AIDS without examining the patients or determining whether they had it; at least some later were found not to have the virus. Hemrajani billed Medicaid for treatment, including follow-up visits that didn't happen, and the patients used the government health program to buy the drugs, according to the judge's recap. Then the patients traded the medications for cash from the middlemen, who sold the medicine illegally. The scam came to light when some of the patients tried to get a prescription for the drugs from a hospital, which tested them and found they were HIV-negative. More than 150 patients were involved in the scam. Thirty have been criminally charged, and 17 have been sentenced so far, some to lengthy prison terms, state Supreme Court Justice Carol Berkman said, according to a transcript of Hemrajani's arraignment. Berkman has handled some of the patients' cases. Originally from India, Hemrajani has lived in the United States since 1984 and has been in his practice since 1991. State medical records show that Hemrajani has been licensed here since 1986. If convicted, he could face up to 15 years in prison.

Police say that the black teens were part of a mob of between 15 and 20 men and boys connected to four attacks. Dvonte Sykes, 17, and two 16-year-old males were charged with felony counts of robbery and mob action after a man was knocked off his bike, then punched and robbed. His cell phone and camera were stolen. Trovolus Pickett, 17, and Derodte M. Wright, 18, were charged in connection with an attack that happened earlier in the evening.

Prosecutors want to lock a 12-year-old Hispanic up for the rest of his life - to stop him from killing again

Cristian Fernandez could become America's youngest ever lifer after being charged as an adult over the murder of his two-year-old brother. If Fernandez were charged as a juvenile and convicted he would be free by the time he is 21. Fernandez beat his younger brother David Galarriago to death at their home in Jacksonville, Florida, in March 2011. The two-year-old died from a fractured skull that caused bleeding on the brain. He died two days after being admitted to a hospital. An autopsy showed that the injuries were caused with blunt force trauma consistent with being punched in the head. Fernandez had previously assaulted his brother and broken his leg. Prosecutors decided to charge Fernandez as an adult rather than a juvenile defender after reviewing his history of violence and behavior. Fernandez's defence has compiled a dossier exposing family turmoil, sexual battery and an abusive stepfather’s suicide. His mother Biannela Susana, 25, had him when she was just 12-years-old. Both mother and child were put into the foster care system when Fernandez was two and she was 14 after authorities found the toddler walking around dirty and naked outside a South Florida motel while his grandmother, who would have been about 34 at the time, nursed a drug habit. Documentation also indicates that abuse was occurring regularly in the home from the beginning of Fernandez’s young life. His stepfather shot himself in front of the family to avoid being arrested on child abuse charges. Fernandez’s biological father has never been around, partly because he went to prison on sexual assault charges after impregnating Fernandez’s mother.

A trial has been set for a black man accused of killing and dismembering 11 women

The case against Anthony Sowell is grounded in his Cleveland backyard. There, in October 2009, investigators unearthed remains of five of the 11 women - ages 25 to 52 - found on Sowell's property. Sowell faces 85 counts related to his rape, murder and dismembering of the women between 2007 and 2009 - charges to which he's pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Since the bodies were discovered, other women have come forward saying that Sowell also attacked them. Islamic terrorists who have attended English universities include Taimour Abdulwahab al-Abdaly, the Stockholm suicide bomber who had a BS in sports therapy from the University of Luton, now the University of Bedfordshire. The Detroit underpants bomber, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, studied mechanical engineering at University College London between 2005 and 2008. Two of the fanatics convicted of the transatlantic liquid bomb plot – ringleader Abdulla Ahmed Ali and Assad Sarwar – attended City and Brunel Universities respectively. Ten of the 11 Pakistani nationals seized on suspicion of plotting an atrocity in the North-West in 2009 had student visas. The ringleader of this plot – Abid Naseer – was a computer studies student at Liverpool John Moores University.

Giant rats are killing children in South Africa

The monster rodents are as big as cats and are believed to have killed two babies in South Africa's squalid townships. The giant rats grow up to three feet including their tails - and have front teeth over an inch long. Three-year-old Lunathi Dwadwa was killed as she slept in her parent's shack in a slum outside Cape Town. Another baby girl died in a similar rat attack, on the same day, but this time in the Soweto township near Johannesburg. Little Lunathi was sleeping on a makeshift bed on the floor of her family's breeze block and corrugated iron home when she died. Her distraught mother discovered her lifeless body and said that her daughter's eyes had been gouged out. Bukiswa Dwadwa, 27, said: "I can't forget how ugly my child looked after her eyes were ripped out. She was eaten from her eyebrows to her cheeks, her other eye was hanging by a piece of flesh." Her father Mncedisi Mokoena said police told him: "Nothing could have done that but rats." The police have revealed that the second baby girl died in the Soweto township when she was attacked by rats while her teenage mother was out with friends. Police officer Bongani Mhlongo said: "We were called to the scene of the death of an infant due to a rat attack on Monday morning at around 9:00 am. The mother of the child was arrested on charges of culpable homicide and negligence." The deaths appear to be part of a spate of deadly rat attacks in the country. Recently, 77-year-old grandmother Nomathemba Joyi died after giant rats chewed off the right side of her face. The killer rodents are believed to be African Giant Pouched Rats - a species native to sub-Saharan Africa. African Giant Pouched Rats are the biggest in the world. They are nocturnal, omnivorous - eating both plants and animals - and can produce up to 50 young a year.

The Obedient Wives Club, which was set up by a group of Muslim women, said that domestic violence, infidelity and prostitution stemmed from a lack of belief in Allah and a failure of women to satisfy their husbands. The club's president, Rohaya Mohamed, said that it would conduct seminars on how to be a good wife as well as offer marriage counseling. "A man married to a woman who is as good or better than a prostitute in bed has no reason to stray. Rather than allowing him to sin, a woman must do all she can to ensure his desires are met," Rohaya said.

A black man has been found guilty of raping and impregnating a 12-year-old girl in December of 2010

Gary Daniels, 64, has been found guilty of a single count of rape. Daniels was sentenced to life in prison, with the possibility for parole after 10 years. Prosecutors proved that Daniels raped the girl sometime in mid-to-late December 2010. The mother of the girl contacted police in late January 2011 regarding the rape and alerted authorities that a physical performed on her daughter showed that the girl was pregnant. In the event of parole, Daniels will be labeled a Tier III sex offender. He will have to register his home address every 90 days with authorities.

A 19 year-old Zimbabwean teenager, Phillip Tadzingwa Gambiza, has been charged with murder following a mafia style shooting of a 25 year-old in London

Reports in the British media say that Gambiza, together with an accomplice who has also been picked up by the police, fatally shot Sadiq Adebiyi in a motorbike ride-by shooting in South London. Adebiyi was standing near Stockwell Tube Station when Gambiza and his yet to be named accomplice opened fire with a machine gun. The gun shots left Adebiyi mortally wounded. He was taken to King’s College Hospital where he was pronounced dead an hour later. Scotland Yard said in a statement that a passing police van followed the motorbike immediately after the shooting. They caught up with Gambiza, who lives in south-west London, at a housing estate in Battersea. The Crime Prosecution Service authorized the Metropolitan Police to charge Gambiza with one count of murder and an additional charge of possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Jurors deliberated for just 90 minutes before finding Rodney L. McGowan, 42, guilty of the charges that included Class X counts of home invasion and aggravated criminal sexual assault as well as a charge of aggravated battery to a senior citizen. A Class X felony carries a mandatory prison sentence of up to 60 years, and Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Joseph Cullen said that he will ask Judge Timothy Q. Sheldon to impose sentences to run consecutively — creating the possibility of a 120-year sentence for McGowan.

Common in those with high blood pressure, left ventricular hypertrophy is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, especially heart failure. Importantly, the cardiovascular risks associated with left ventricular hypertrophy start increasing early in the process, often before the appearance of overt symptoms. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to high rates of cardiovascular disease in blacks but whether supplementation can reduce this risk is not known. It is thought that vitamin D deficiency may accelerate ventricular changes that occur with high blood pressure, thus serving as a potential point of intervention.

The northern Manyara region police commander, Parmena Sumari, said that his officers were searching for the killers of Sifael Jackson. A gang ambushed Jackson's car and killed him with spears, machetes and clubs. The murder comes amid strong opposition to the government's promotion of big-scale farming. "Mr Jackson was brutally killed and decapitated by a gang of about 15 people on Tuesday evening," Mwaipaja said. Some residents in the region accuse the government of threatening their livelihood by allocating land to big commercial farmers, including foreigners, he says. But the government says that its policy is aimed at boosting food production and ensuring that land is not under-utilized. At least four farms have been invaded in 2011 near Babati town in Manyara region, with fields torched and property destroyed. Mwaipaja said that the government was concerned that the violence would scare away foreign investors who it believed were helping Tanzania's "Green Revolution". The government's campaign to promote large-scale commercial farming is a dramatic reversal of the socialist policies it advocated after independence.

A trial date is to be set for the tragic case of a South African pastor who was burnt alive for having a magic penis

Twelve people, nine men and three women between the ages of 28 and 50, are to appear in a Mpumalanga court on charges of murder and arson following the death of Albert Malwane. The villagers burnt the pastor to death after claiming that he had been talking to animals and was using an invisible penis to sleep with women in the community. The deceased was dragged from his home and set alight on a nearby hill. His house was also burnt to the ground and his wife and daughter have subsequently gone into hiding. The community had accused Malwane's wife of turning into a snail and terrorizing the village. Following the pastor's death, the accused have claimed that Malwane's family had made the villagers sick after the funeral. The deceased’s own father has also said that he believes that a curse was released following his son’s death.

The FBI is investigating reports that a suicide bomber who killed two African Union soldiers in Mogadishu, Somalia, was an American citizen. According to the African Union, several Islamic extremist insurgents had disguised themselves as Somali government forces in order to attack an African Union post. Days after the suicide bombing, al-Shabaab, a Somali militant group allied with al Qaeda, posted a statement on its website identifying the suicide bomber responsible for the bombing as Abdullahi Ahmed, a Somali-American from Minneapolis. In 2008, a sizable group of young Somali-American men left Minneapolis - home to America’s largest Somali population - and were feared recruited by al-Shabaab. Al-Shabaab has been waging a war against Somalia’s government in an effort to implement a stricter form of Islamic law, or sharia law. Somalia has not had a stable government since 1991, and fighting between the rebels and government troops has added to the impoverished East African nation’s humanitarian crisis.

Women account for more than 1 in 4 of all new HIV/AIDS cases in the state, according to the public health department. More than half of the cases are African-American women. A lot of African-American women don't really know what their partners are doing or that their partners are keeping certain aspects of their life shielded from them. The leading cause of HIV infection among white women was injection drug use.

The DRD4 gene codes for a dopamine receptor in the brain. It exists in several versions, or alleles, and studies have shown that people tend to have slightly different personality traits depending on which they have. The 4R allele, for instance, is associated with being even-tempered, reflective and prudent. The less common 7R and 2R versions have been linked to impulsive and exploratory behavior, risk-taking and the ability to shrug off new situations. Researchers think that humans who migrated from Africa with these versions were better able to deal with dangerous, fluctuating situations and more likely to survive and reproduce under those conditions. They looked at the frequency of 7R and 2R in 18 indigenous populations spread along the routes humans took from Africa to Europe, Asia and the Americas. The further away from Africa they were, the more likely they were to have either of these two versions. Researchers are beginning to play with the idea that our culture could be influencing evolution. They have shown that 7R arose as a rare mutation 40,000 to 50,000 years ago, after the ancestors of Europeans and Asians left Africa, then spread rapidly. The 2R allele is a modified version that arose in Asia less than 10,000 years ago. The have also shown that people diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are twice as likely to have the 7R allele. Some of what we consider ADHD symptoms, like rapidly shifting focus and quick movements, may actually be survival traits that were selected for during the Eurasian migration out of Africa.

A genetic variant affecting the cardiac sodium channel has been found to influence the propensity for ventricular arrhythmias in African-American patients with systolic heart failure (HF)

The study represents the first report that the S1103Y variant modulates arrhythmia risk in this patient population. African Americans disproportionately suffer from HF, ventricular arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac death (SCD) when compared to whites. The researchers hypothesized that acquired arrhythmias might be associated with the common S1103Y variant in the cardiac sodium channel gene SCN5A. S1103Y is found almost exclusively in people of African descent and has a prevalence of 13% among African Americans; it is known to be associated with life-threatening arrhythmias, SCD, and sudden infant death syndrome. The specific association between the S1103Y genotype and an increased risk of arrhythmia in HF may have particular significance as a novel risk factor for African Americans.

U.S. District Judge Joel Pisano spared Rabbi Saul Kassin a prison sentence, but fined him $36,750, in addition to the nearly $370,000 Kassin agreed to forfeit after he was caught up in New Jersey’s largest-ever corruption bust. The chief rabbi of Congregation Sharee Zion in Brooklyn, N.Y., Kassin pleaded guilty in March 2011 to one count of unauthorized money transmitting. According to the criminal complaint, he had used the Magen Israel Society, a charity he controlled, to deposit thousands of dollars in checks from Solomon Dwek, the son of another New Jersey rabbi. Kassin then issued checks to other organizations at Dwek’s behest, taking a 10% commission. The judge seemed most surprised at a brazen request by Kassin to have the $367,500 he forfeited returned to him. “I want that money back, to donate it,” Kassin said. “They kept it for two years almost — it’s enough.” Pisano quickly snubbed that request, saying that Kassin bore the blame for any misfortune that befell the beneficiaries of his charity as a result of his knowing participation in an economic crime. Though Kassin lives in Brooklyn, he appeared before a federal court in New Jersey because the illegal money transfer took place in Deal, N.J., an insular enclave of the Syrian Jewish community where many of New York’s Syrian Jews vacation in the summer. Two other rabbis from Deal were among the people arrested in 2009 as part of the federal sting.

A teenage Muslim girl was stoned to death under Sharia law after taking part in a beauty contest in Ukraine

Katya Koren, 19, was found dead in a village in the Crimea region near her home. Friends said that she liked wearing fashionable clothes and had come seventh in a beauty contest. Her battered body was buried in a forest and was found a week after she disappeared. Police have opened a murder investigation and are looking into claims that three Muslim youths killed her, claiming that her death was justified under Islam. One of the three - named as 16-year-old Bihal Gaziev - is under arrest and told police that Katya had violated the laws of Sharia. Gaziev has said that he has no regrets about her death.

The first Conservative black peer has been jailed for 12 months in Britain

Lord Taylor of Warwick has become the first peer to be jailed over the parliamentary expenses scandal after a judge sentenced him to 12 months in prison for claiming more than £11,000 in false travel and overnight subsistence allowances. The 58-year-old former barrister, the first parliamentarian to stand trial over expenses, had pursued a protracted course of dishonesty and lied to the jury on oath, the judge, Mr Justice Saunders, said when passing sentence at Southwark crown court. The first Conservative black peer, who joined the House of Lords in 1996, had said that his main residence was in Oxford – while in fact his only residence was in Ealing, west London – so that he could claim for travel and subsistence when attending the House of Lords. He was convicted in January 2011 on six counts of false accounting for making £11,277 worth of fraudulent claims between March 2006 and October 2007. He told the court that he believed he only needed a "family connection" to a property to enter it as a main residence on claims forms. The Oxford property, which he had visited twice and had never stayed at, was owned by the partner of his half-nephew who knew nothing of his uncle's claims and suffered considerable distress as a result of the police investigation. As Taylor was sentenced, it emerged that about 15 fellow peers, including Lord Clarke of Hampstead, a former chairman of the Labor party, had refused to give evidence at the trial to support his defense.

Thirty-year-old Waad Ramadan Alwan and 23-year-old Mohanad Shareef Hammadi, who both have lived in Bowling Green since 2009, were charged in a 23-count indictment returned by a federal grand jury. Alwan is charged with conspiracy to kill a United States national, conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction, and attempting to provide material support to terrorists. Hammadi is charged with attempting to provide material support to terrorists and knowingly transferring, possessing, or exporting a device designed or intended to launch or guide a rocket or missile.

A senior Egyptian general admits that "virginity checks" were performed on women arrested at a demonstration in Spring 2011

The allegations arose in an Amnesty International report. It claimed that female demonstrators were beaten, given electric shocks, strip-searched, threatened with prostitution charges and forced to submit to virginity checks. At that time, Maj. Amr Imam said that 17 women had been arrested but denied allegations of torture or "virginity tests." But now a senior general who asked not to be identified said that the virginity tests were conducted and defended the practice. The general said that the virginity checks were done so that the women wouldn't later claim they had been raped by Egyptian authorities. "We didn't want them to say we had sexually assaulted or raped them, so we wanted to prove that they weren't virgins in the first place," the general said. "None of them were (virgins)." This may make sense to an Egyptian but I fail to see how the women not being virgins proves that they could not be the victims of rape or sexual assault.

Police in southern Bangladesh say a woman cut off a man's penis during an alleged attempt to rape her and took it to a police station as evidence

Monju Begum, 40, a married mother of three, told police that neighbor Mozammel Haq Mazi forced his way into her shanty and started assaulting her. Mazi, who denies the accusation, has been admitted to a nearby hospital. "We will arrest him once his condition gets better," police spokesman Abul Khaer said. "She said she fought back and cut off his penis and brought it to our police station in a polythene bag to prove that Mr Mazi tried to rape her," Abul Khaer said. "She has registered a case accusing him of attempted rape," he said. Monju Begum told police that Mazi, a married father of five, had been harassing her for the past six months. But Mazi denied the allegations. "We were having an affair and recently she suggested that both of us can go and settle down in Dhaka," Mazi said from the hospital. "I refused and told her that I cannot leave my wife and children, so she took revenge on me." Prof AMSM Sharfuzzaman, a senior surgeon at the Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital in Barisal town, said that it had not been possible to reattach the organ. "Police brought his severed penis several hours after the incident," he said. "We are treating him so that he can urinate normally without the penis."

An illegal immigrant from Pakistan who abducted and molested two young girls has finally been deported from Britain after a two-year legal battle

Zulfar Hussain, 48, was due to be deported after being released from prison half-way through his sentence. He had been convicted of child-sex offenses after plying two vulnerable girls with drugs and alcohol before having sex with them. But Pakistani-born Hussain, who lived with his British wife and 3 children in Blackburn, launched a legal bid to stay in Britain. Using Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights – which says ‘everyone has the right to respect for his private and family life, his home and his correspondence’ – he argued that he should be allowed to return to his wife and children on his release from prison. But the Home Office fought Hussain’s legal application and kept him in a secure immigration removal center. After a two-year battle and a £100,000 bill for the British taxpayer he was finally sent back to Pakistan. Hussain came to Britain illegally in the late 1980s and married his wife in February 1990 before going on to have 3 children. He was granted leave to remain in September 1994, before being given indefinite leave a year later. In 2005 Hussain and an accomplice, Qaiser Naveed, 34, a fellow Pakistani national, groomed two 15-year-old girls, who were in local authority care, for sex over a period of months in his adopted home town of Blackburn. The teenagers were plied with alcohol and ecstasy pills, before the men had sex with them. Hussain and Naveed were arrested when social workers raised the alarm. They were both jailed for five years and eight months in 2007 and were both ordered to be deported back to Pakistan following their release.

Yitzhak Shuchat - accused of beating Charles, who is black, with a wooden club - has been arrested in Israel and faces an extradition hearing. Andrew Charles was attacked in Crown Heights when a Jewish man on a bicycle doused him with pepper spray. Shuchat is accused of jumping out of a GMC Envoy and beating him in the back and arm with a nightstick, police said. A month after the attack, police released a photo of Shuchat, a member of a Hasidic Jewish civilian crime patrol named Shmira, and an arrest warrant was issued. But Shuchat escaped to Canada three weeks after the attack and went to Israel three days later. He now faces charges of second-degree assault as a hate crime. Moses Charles was enraged to learn that Shuchat was living openly outside Tel Aviv with his family. "My son has been suffering," he said. "I hope we can finally have some closure."

A well-connected kosher slaughterhouse king convicted of fraud at his Iowa plant has rustled up a herd of New York politicians to try to win him a reduced sentence

The prominent Lubavitcher Jew from Brooklyn, Sholom Rubashkin, has been sentenced to 27 years in prison for 86 counts of financial crimes as well as lying on the witness stand. Yet the disgraced Jewish businessman has friends in high places, including Reps. Anthony Weiner, Jerrold Nadler, Eliot Engel, Carolyn McCarthy, Edolphus Towns, Carolyn Maloney, Steve Israel and Yvette Clarke, who have lobbied for a review of his case. Rubashkin has also enlisted more than 30 other lawmakers from New Jersey to California to voice outrage, along with several former U.S. attorneys general. The head of the Democratic National Committee, Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, used part of her time at a recent hearing with Attorney General Eric Holder to remind him to review Rubashkin's sentence. Rubashkin is a member of a large and influential Hasidic Jewish family that ran the nation's largest kosher slaughterhouse, Agriprocessor, sending turkey, chicken and beef across the country. The Brooklyn businessman was at the pinnacle of the lucrative kosher food world, and through business and marriage is connected to huge swaths of the Chabad-Lubavitch Hasidic Jewish community, a reliable and sometimes pivotal voting bloc. Rubashkin was arrested in October 2008, five months after the Department of Justice and Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers raided his Iowa plant and arrested nearly 400 illegal immigrants. An Iowa federal jury found him guilty of a $26 million financial scheme of inflating accounts and laundering money.

Nor is he acting against international companies and corporations that operate in Iran, while maintaining huge contracts with Israeli companies - including state bodies like the Electric Corporation and Airport Authority. Apparently, it is alright to deal with Iran as long as Israel profits from it.

By age 30, between 68% and 75% of young men with a high school degree or less are fathers

Almost half of all kids are being raised by at least one parent with a low educational background (high school degree or less by age 30) and a poor expected economic future. Additionally 62% of fathers with a high school degree or less earned less than $20,000 in 2002.

Taliban gunmen have killed the headteacher of a girls' school near the Afghan capital after he ignored warnings to stop teaching girls

Khan Mohammad, the head of the Porak girls' school in Logar province, has been shot dead near his home. Mohammad had received several death threats from the Taliban warning him not to teach girls. Education for women was banned by the Taliban government from 1996 to 2001 as un-Islamic. There are periodic attacks against schoolgirls, their teachers and school buildings. Women have won back some rights, including education and the right to vote, since the Taliban were toppled after the US-led invasion of late 2001. The Afghan government and its western backers have pledged to guarantee those advances, although the promise seems precarious as Afghan leaders begin a reconciliation process that includes talks with the Taliban. Development agencies fear that western governments are focusing too heavily on plans to complete a security handover from foreign forces to Afghans by the end of 2014 without cementing gains for women, such as education. Under the Taliban women were barred from access to health care and made to wear burqas covering them from head to toe, and only boys were allowed to attend school. Many of those customs are still widespread. Girls have had acid thrown in their faces by Islamists while walking to school and schools have been set on fire. In 2010, there was a spate of mysterious gas poisonings at girls' schools, including some in Kabul, in which dozens of girls fell ill.

Italian government makes a fool of itself

Italian government officials have accused the country's top seismologist of manslaughter, after failing to predict a natural disaster that struck Italy in 2009, a massive devastating earthquake that killed 308 people. A shocked spokesman for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) likened the accusations to a witch hunt. "It has a medieval flavor to it - like witches are being put on trial," the stunned spokesman said. Enzo Boschi, the president of Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), will face trial along with six other scientists and technicians, after failing to predict the future and the impending disaster. This is the sort of nonsense that you would expect to find in a Third World country.

Overestimating homosexuality

A Gallup poll shows that U.S. adults, on average, estimate that 25% of Americans are gay or lesbian. More specifically, 52% estimate that at least one in five Americans are gay or lesbian, including 35% who estimate that more than one in four are. Only 30% put the figure at less than 15%. Recently, demographer Gary Gates released a review of population-based surveys on the topic, estimating that 3.5% of adults in the United States identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual, with bisexuals making up a slight majority of that figure. Gates disputes the claim that 10% of the males are more or less exclusively homosexual. Americans with lower incomes and less education give the highest estimates, on average, of the U.S. gay and lesbian population, and far higher estimates than those with higher incomes and more education. Americans aged 18 to 29 give a higher average estimate than older Americans, and women give a far higher average estimate than men. The data shows that 53% of people making under $30,000 annually believe that at least 25% of the population was gay, and 47% of those with no more than a high school education.

Sadiq Abdel Mullah was sentenced to death for the fatal stabbing of Ahmed Mohammed. His beheading raised to 22 the number of people executed in Saudi Arabia in 2011. In 2010, 27 executions were reported in the oil-rich kingdom, down from 67 in 2009 and 102 in 2008. Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under the Muslim kingdom's strict interpretation of Islamic sharia law.

A former Miss World has been awarded £70,000 in damages after suing no-frills carrier Ryanair for defamation

A jury at the High Court in Dublin has ruled that publicity by the airline implied that model Rosanna Davison, daughter of singer Chris de Burgh, was racist, xenophobic, jealous and narrow-minded. The case centered on a press release posted on Ryanair’s website in November 2008 in response to remarks Davison, 27, made the previous day in a newspaper. Asked what she thought of the lack of any Irish women in Ryanair’s 2009 charity calendar of bikini-clad cabin crew, she said: ‘If I was (organizing) it, I would have made sure Irish women were involved because it’s an Irish charity and Irish fundraising.’ The airline’s release said that the comments by Miss Davison, who was crowned Miss World in 2003, ‘bordered on racism and demonstrated an elitist attitude against Ryanair’s international cabin crew’.

A black church youth leader has been indicted on 13 charges related to sex crimes against juveniles

African-American Angelo "Doogie" Golatt, a former Pineville church youth leader, has been indicted on 13 charges related to felony sex crimes involving juveniles. The charges involved in the indictment are two counts of aggravated rape, one count of attempted aggravated rape, eight counts of sexual battery, one count of molestation of a juvenile and one count of indecent behavior with a juvenile.

An Indian mother who offered to sell her baby to a childless couple for £35,000 in a case of modern-day slavery has been jailed for seven years

The married Indian woman was ready to abandon the 11-month-old girl with the buyers in a hotel room when police swooped. A Pakistani businessman acted as a middleman, brokering the sale and promising a name-change with a fake birth certificate for the new parents. But the purchasers turned out to be undercover reporters from a Sunday newspaper, Inner London Crown Court heard. The businessman, 48, turned up with the 29-year-old mother, with babe-in-arms, for the handover after a series of taped phone conversations. The woman's 31-year-old husband, who was not the baby's father, was cleared of involvement in the conspiracy. Unknown to them, police were listening in the next room and waiting for the signal from the reporter. The mother and the businessman, who is a successful estate agent, were convicted of child cruelty and slavery over the unvetted adoption for profit. The businessman was jailed for nine years.

Jewish Attorney General goes after English-only New York town

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman ordered the upstate town of Jackson to “immediately” overturn a local ordinance that made English the town’s official language, warning that the statute is “illegal” and “discriminatory.” The ordinance, which prohibits public officials in Jackson from speaking or writing in any language but English while they are carrying out their official duties, will be voted on once again by the town council on June 1, 2011 because of the intervention by the state AG’s office.

An immigrant cat killer convicted using DNA evidence has been slapped with a six-year sentence and will likely soon be deported

Trinidadian immigrant Angelo Monderoy said he torched his super's cat, Tommy Two Times, out of boredom. A jury found that Monderoy and his friend grabbed Tommy Two Times, took him to an abandoned apartment in their Crown heights tenement, doused him with lighter fluid and lit him on fire in the 2008 attack. The guilty verdict marked the first time that DNA evidence led to a conviction in an animal abuse case in the history of New York State and possibly the nation. Tommy was found badly burned outside the tenement and investigators were able to trace the crime back to Monderoy's lair. That evidence also helped bring more serious burglary charges, for which Monderoy, 20, got two to six years upstate. He also received the max of two years for aggravated animal abuse and up to four years for arson, all running concurrently. Because he's been jailed for more than two years awaiting trial, he's already eligible for parole, but will likely face deportation once out of prison, officials said.

A former leader of the Shia Muslim community in Trinidad has been convicted of taking part in a failed plot to blow up fuel tanks and pipelines at JFK airport in New York

Kareem Ibrahim was convicted of five conspiracy counts in the plot, which officials say was meant to outdo 9/11. Russell Defreitas and Abdul Kadir are serving life sentences after also being convicted for their roles. Ibrahim, 65, also faces life in prison. Prosecutors said that the men had wanted to kill thousands in New York and shake the U.S. economy by blowing up fuel tanks and pipelines that run under a neighborhood near the airport. The scheme was uncovered when an informant recorded a discussion about the planned attack between Kadir and Defreitas, who began preparations for the attack in 2006. Defreitas, a 68-year-old former cargo handler, and Kadir, a former member of Guyana's parliament, were convicted on conspiracy charges in August 2010.

At least 2,000 people have fled their homes in Michoacan state, in western Mexico, amid several days of fighting between gangs

The worst of the violence is centered on the town of Buenavista. Streets are deserted in some suburbs but in central areas witnesses reported bursts of automatic weapon fire. It is believed to be factional infighting within the La Familia cartel. At least three people are confirmed dead but a local newspaper journalist said that the rival gangs had removed their fallen comrades from the streets. A shelter has been set up for the displaced families from Buenavista.

A Hispanic nursing aide has been sentenced to seven years in state prison for sexually abusing a disabled and speech-impaired 61-year-old

Jose Ramos, 62, has been convicted of first degree sex abuse and second degree endangering the welfare of a vulnerable elderly person. He was also sentenced to one year in jail on one count of endangering the welfare of a physically disabled person, to run concurrently with his prison term. Upon his release, Ramos will be under post-release supervision for 10 years and will be required to register as a sex offender.

American Jewish groups are fighting a proposed ban of Sharia law in the state of Oklahoma

A coalition of organizations that include the Council on American-Islamic Relations and the American Jewish Committee (AJC) are backing a legal appeal against a measure that would prevent Islamic law from being used in the state's courts. The AJC filed a brief with the US Court of Appeals arguing that the ban is an attack on religious freedom. The AJC said that the provision - called the "Save our State law" by its supporters and adopted after a referendum which delivered a 70% "yes" vote - is unconstitutional, violating a clause in the First Amendment which bars a state preference for one religion over another. "In a nation that treasures religious freedom and whose constitution forbids government to have favored or disfavored faiths, the Oklahoma provision cannot stand," wrote AJC Associate General counsel Marc Stern. The Anti-Defamation League and the Union of Reform Judaism supported the brief, as did the Center for Islamic Pluralism. Stephen Schwartz, who converted to Islam as an adult and is the executive director of the Center for Islamic Pluralism, said that both Jews and moderate Muslims are interested in protecting religious freedom. He said that American Jewish groups often work with Islamic organizations. "The AJC has organized three trips for moderate Muslims to visit Israel," Schwartz said. Once again we see Jews siding with Muslims against Christians.

More than 50 Somali-owned shops in the South African city of Port Elizabeth have been attacked and looted by local residents

Police said that four shops had been burnt down and about 200 Somalis living near the shop premises had fled the unrest. A Somali community leader said that there was some resentment in the area about the success of Somali traders. At least 62 people died in attacks on foreigners that swept the country a few years ago. In total, 52 shops were looted and three were burnt down in the Motherwell area and three shops were looted and one torched in Kwadwesi, the police said. Abdirahman Yusuf Ahmed, a spokesman for the Somali community in the Eastern Cape, said one Somali trader was in hospital after he was tied up in his shop when it was set alight.

Black Bishop Eddie Long, the Atlanta-based megachurch leader, has reached an out-of-court settlement with four young men who accused him of sexual coercion

The suits accused Long of using his position coerce the men into having sexual relationships with him while they were teenage members of his congregation. The lawsuits say Long engaged in intimate sexual acts with the young men, such as massages, masturbation and oral sex. Long took the young men on trips including to Kenya, according to the suits. He allegedly enticed the young men with gifts including cars, clothes, jewelry and electronic items.

A shootout between rival Mexican gangs has left at least 28 people dead

The gunfight took place at a crossroads near Ruiz in the Pacific coast state of Nayarit, some 500 miles north-west of Mexico City. Police found 28 men dead and four wounded when they reached the scene, which was littered with bullet shells. Nayarit state has a strong presence of one of Mexico's most powerful drug gangs, the Sinaloa cartel, which is run by the country's most wanted man, Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman. Security forces in Nayarit had initially been investigating a reported kidnapping when they were alerted to the shooting nearby. When they reached the scene, they found 28 bodies, and four people injured. Ten vehicles had been abandoned at the site, the state attorney general's office said. It was not clear what had provoked the shooting but the Sinaloa gang has been battling two other cartels in the area, Los Zetas and La Familia. In Michoacan, officials said that 48 hours of gun battles between suspected drug gangs had forced more than 1,000 people to flee villages in the Tierra Caliente region of the state.
