A 16-year-old black male has been indicted on charges of first-degree murder with a firearm and first-degree manslaughter with a firearm

Parrish Bennette has pleaded not guilty to the charges, both of which are Measure 11 crimes, in front of a packed court room. All his future court appearances will be in adult court. A Multnomah County grand jury returned the indictment after four days of considering evidence. Police say that Bennette killed 14-year-old Yashanee Vaughn whose body has not been found. Vaughn's family members say the two were dating. Police have not said what evidence they have in the case, but the new charges indicate investigators believe a gun was used. A three-day search at Rocky Butte Park ended without police finding the girl. Bennette’s bail has been revoked and his trial is set to start May 23, 2011.
