Why is a mutant version of SLC24a5 so successful?

A mutant version of SLC24a5 is the biggest single cause of light skin color in Western Eurasia and it is very widespread. Its gene frequency in Moroccans is 90%; in Egypt, 88%; in Libya, 92%; amongst Saudis, 95%; 47% in South India and it is 50% in Sinhalese, right on the equator. It’s rare in most of Africa, but it is found in places like Ethiopia (55%) and amongst the Masai (27%). Could its success have anything to do with lactase persistence or vitamin D?
