Was Gandhi a racist and a pervert?

Joseph Lelyveld has written a book about ­Mohandas Gandhi called "Great Soul" that shows him to be a sexual weirdo, a political incompetent and a fanatical faddist. He referred to black South Africans as "kaffirs" - which is usually used as a term of offense - and said that they were troublesome, dirty and lived like animals. He also claimed to believe in racial purity. He slept naked with his 17-year-old great-niece Manu and other young women. In addition, he was apparently sexually attracted to a Jewish architect and bodybuilder named Hermann Kallenbach.
