Marshall County sheriff's deputies have arrested Juan Vargas, 28, on a warrant for sexual abuse of a child under the age of 12

When deputies checked on Vargas' immigration status, it was learned that he is in the United States illegally from his native country of Guatemala. Vargas is being held in the Marshall County Jail. In addition to the sexual abuse charge, he is being charged with willful failure to carry alien registration under Alabama's new immigration law. An ICE detainer also has been placed. Vargas' bond on the sex offense is set at $10,000. He is being held with no bond on the immigration offense.
