Prehypertension and hypertension are independently associated with increased risk for Type 2 diabetes in people of white ethnicity

This is not the case in African-Americans, however, in whom the higher incidence of diabetes among hypertensive individuals could be explained by the presence of other risk factors such as elevated body mass index (BMI), fasting glucose, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels.
