The number of black people murdered in New York City in 2010 rose by 31%
The number of whites slain in New York City in 2010 dropped 27%. Two-thirds of the murder victims in 2010 were black, even though blacks comprise just 25% of the city's population. NYPD officials said the surging number of black victims was the primary factor in the city's 14% spike in homicides. More then 75% of all murder victims had prior arrests (with half of them having drug charges against them and a quarter of them either on parole or probation at the time of their death). Over 60% of murder suspects were black, according to the NYPD. While male blacks, ages 15 to 29, make up 3% of the city’s population, they were 33% of all murder victims. The NYPD said that among blacks arrested for murder, 85% of their victims were black.
