Youth gun violence in San Mateo County from 2005 to 2009 cost society an estimated $234 million and was inflicted overwhelmingly on black and Latino youths, usually by other blacks and Hispanics
Young African-American men are 3½ times more likely to be shot and killed than other county residents. Latinos face a 14% higher chance of getting shot than other youths. Both numbers are drawn from statistics tracking gun killings per 100,000 county residents between 1990 and 2009. The perpetrators of these shootings are generally black and Hispanic as well.
