A Native American Indian tribe in Florida says that its former chief worked for years to siphon off $26 million in tribal money for his own personal use
A federal lawsuit filed by the Miccosukee Tribe of Miami-Dade County says that Billy Cypress used the cash to buy expensive jewelry, luxury cars, upscale homes and pricy gambling trips. The suit also implicates two former US Attorneys who worked for the tribe, one of whom now represents Cypress personally. The tribe, which runs a lucrative casino on the edge of the everglades, claims Cypress used a network of highly-paid advisers, including lawyers, to cover up the payouts from 2006 to 2009.
