A black man suspected in the deaths of his wife and her three children found in their burned apartment has been arrested in South Carolina

Newport News police said that John Moses Ragin, 36, was taken into custody after he called detectives to say he was in Manning, South Carolina. Police said that they were bringing Ragin back to Virginia after obtaining warrants for four counts of murder. Additional charges are pending. Police found four bodies when they were called to the family's apartment because of a fire. They have been identified as 32-year-old Crystal Ragin and her children, 15-year-old Sierra, 10-year-old Rasheed and 6-year-old Lakwan. Officials say that each suffered apparent knife wounds and exposure to the fire, but a medical examiner has yet to determine how each died.

Pakistani marital violence in America

The tragic Muslim mother-of-two who was fatally shot on a New Jersey street was acquainted with the woman hired by her husband to kill her. The sister of slain 27-year-old Nazish Noorani says that she met her husband, Kashif Parvaiz's mistress, Antoinette Stephen, during an earlier trip to Boston, Massachusetts. Lubna Choudry accused her brother-in-law of flaunting the extra-marital affair, going so far as to introduce Stephen as his fiancée to get a discount at a Boston Best Buy, where the hit-woman worked. Parvaiz and 26-year-old Stephen of Billerica, Massachusetts, both face charges of murder, conspiracy and weapons offenses for the shooting. Parvaiz also faces child-endangerment charges. The married couple were walking with their three-year-old son in Boonton, New Jersey to Choudry's home three blocks away when shots rang out. Noorani was hit near her heart. Parvaiz was shot in the ankle and shoulder, sustaining superficial wounds. The child was not injured. The couple's five-year-old son was with family members inside the house. Parvaiz initially told police his family had been attacked by a group of men who called them terrorists, authorities said, but Stephen and Parvaiz exchanged text messages in the days leading up to the shooting, according to an arrest affidavit released by the Morris County prosecutor's office. Texts from Stephen's number describe driving around the neighbourhood to see how far away the nearest police station was. Parvaiz, who has been in the hospital, was charged after admitting that he was involved in the killing. He is being held on $1 million bail. Stephen was arrested in Massachusetts and arraigned on a fugitive-from-justice charge. She is being held without bail at a women's prison there. Parvaiz's accounts of the attack were inconsistent and immediately raised suspicions, according to Morris County Prosecutor Robert Bianchi. He told investigators that the couple was attacked by a combination of black and white males who shouted ethnic slurs, authorities said. In his initial story, the group shouted something about the family being terrorists, authorities said. But within hours, Bianchi said that it was obvious to investigators that this was the handy work of the victim's husband who did the unthinkable and plotted to murder his wife. Parvaiz conspired with Stephen to have his wife killed because she had dared to speak negatively about his family. The woman was buried after services at an Islamic center in Boonton, a small town about 25 miles west of New York with a large Pakistani population. She was a native of Karachi, Pakistan. Relatives had earlier spoken of the Muslim couple's violent arranged marriage, marred by infidelity and lies. Noorani lived in fear of her abusive husband as their marriage crumbled and chillingly foretold of her fate to her brother. The young Muslim woman married Parvaiz despite a background check run by her family, which revealed that he had lied in the past about graduating from two schools: Brooklyn Polytechnic and New York University. He has also claimed to have attended Ivy League Harvard and Columbia, but neither have records of him signing up.

Black teen kills 92-year-old woman

Thelma Steele, a 92-year-old neighborhood matriarch, and William Fitts, a teenager who lived across the street, were like grandmother and grandson, family members said. She would buy him toys and gadgets for Christmas and his birthday. Recently — after Steele welcomed Fitts into her Forestville home — the 15-year-old black male bludgeoned her with her walking cane and stabbed her with a knife, law enforcement sources said. Steele, a secretary at a D.C. bank who had retired long ago, watched Fitts grow up from the window of her home on East Avenue, family members said. The black boy was adopted from a family in Brazil when he was 3 weeks old and he has lived in the house across the street from Steele’s ever since, family members said. Police said that they don’t know what sparked such a brutal attack, but that Steele’s home was ransacked and robbery may have been part of the motive. Prince George’s County homicide detectives considered Fitts a suspect after someone at a house in his neighborhood tried to use Steele’s credit card to buy synthetic marijuana online, said law enforcement sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Fitts was one of five people from the house who were brought in for questioning, and he soon admitted that he was involved in the killing, according to police and court papers. He said a knife found in his home was the murder weapon, police said. Fitts was charged as an adult with first-degree murder. After a brief hearing, Prince George’s District Judge Thurman H. Rhodes ordered that he be held without bond before a preliminary hearing.

Mental illness: Women are more likely to be diagnosed with anxiety or depression, while men tend toward substance abuse or antisocial disorders

A study looked at the prevalence by gender of different types of common mental illnesses. The researchers also found that women with anxiety disorders are more likely to internalize emotions, which typically results in withdrawal, loneliness and depression. Men, on the other hand, are more likely to externalize emotions, which leads to aggressive, impulsive, coercive and non-compliant behavior, according to the study. Researchers analyzed data collected in 2001 and 2002 by a National Institutes of Health survey of 43,093 U.S. residents 18 and older who were civilians and not institutionalized. Of those, 57% were women and 56.9% were white; 19.3% were Hispanic or Latino; 19.1% were African-American; 3.1% Asian, native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander; and 1.6% were American Indian or native Alaskan.

That’s a huge decline since Spring 2009, when Obama registered an 85% approval rating amongst Latinos.

A teenage waiter knifed two British women to death in Turkey after one refused to let him marry her 15-year-old daughter

The obsessed 17-year-old Turk lured the women to a secluded wood where he cut their throats. The girl, Shannon Graham, had been dating Recep Cetin for two years. He was said to be totally infatuated and very possessive. Recently her mother Marion, 53, had a blazing row with Cetin, who uses the name Alex. After he kicked Shannon during an altercation, Graham went ballistic and told him never to lay a finger on her daughter again. The Turkish waiter responded by threatening to kill Graham if she came between him and Shannon. Cetin has confessed to killing Graham and her friend Cathy Dinsmore, also 53.

Black scientists are significantly less likely than white researchers to win grants from the National Institutes of Health

Since there is an IQ gap between the average black and the average white, we should not be too surprised that there is a similar intelligence gap between black and white scientists which would likely explain why black researchers are less likely to get grants. It makes more sense to give the grant money to the smartest scientists.

A Hispanic has been sentenced to 95 years to life in prison for raping two women

Jaime Zamora Ramirez, 42, was found guilty by a jury of forcibly raping a friend and a minor female, both of whom he met through work. In October 2008, Ramirez went out dancing with some friends, including his first victim. After the victim came back home, Ramirez knocked on her door and asked for a beer to take back to a neighbor's home. One of those neighbors noticed Ramirez talking to the victim, and the two argued about whether Ramirez was bothering her or not. Shortly after the argument, Ramirez barged into the victim's apartment, forced her onto the bed and raped her. In July 2009, Ramirez, who worked as a manager at First Class Cleaners in Fountain Valley, told a minor employee to come over to his home so he can give her some paperwork to bring back to work. When the minor arrived, Ramirez lured her to his bedroom, pretending to give her the paperwork. When she came into his room, Ramirez locked the door and raped her. The second victim threatened to report the rape, but Ramirez told her he knew that she was an illegal immigrant. He said that if she reported the incident, no one would believe her. After her co-workers convinced her, the victim eventually reported the rape to the Costa Mesa Police Department.

A Hispanic has been arrested and charged with raping a 9-year-old

Julio Cruz-Castellanos, 31, has been charged with the continuous sexual abuse of a child, 2nd-degree rape and 3rd-degree unlawful sexual contact. Police say that the child was raped on at least 10 occasions. The abuse had been happening since the child was seven years old, police say.

Suspected traffickers in Mexico killed and mutilated a man, then left his body parts around Acapulco in a macabre taunt to authorities in the resort city that has become plagued by drug violence

Police in the port city received reports of an abandoned human head on a busy street. Officers answering the call also found a human torso stuffed into a bag, the police force said on its website. Later, the deceased's legs and feet were discovered hanging from a downtown bridge, with a message from the perpetrators to authorities. Finally, on another bridge on the road to Mexico City north of Acapulco, police found the victim's hands, bearing a note to state and local governments. Acapulco is one of the tourist destinations most visited by Mexicans, but since 2010 it increasingly has been gripped by violence as warring drug cartels battle for control of criminal activities, mainly trafficking.

Judge orders Chicago to hire 111 black firefighters because they were "discriminated" against

What the judge does not seem to understand is that tests are supposed to discriminate. Their purpose is to separate the qualified from the unqualified. It is not white people's fault that blacks tend to be less qualified than other racial groups.

Rabbi is accused of abusing two boys

Rabbi Uzi Rivlin of Teaneck, New Jersey was running a scholarship program that brought impoverished, Israeli boys and girls to the United States for a summer respite from strife at home. But Bergen County prosecutors say that the 63-year-old married father betrayed the children's trust, sexually abusing at least two, 13-year-old Israeli boys at his Teaneck home, when they came here to spend recent summers. Two boys have filed separate reports with Israeli authorities, claiming that Rivlin had touched them in a sexual manner when they stayed at his home in Teaneck. One boy was here in the summer of 2009 and the other stayed in the house during the summer of 2010. The FBI was notified and turned the information over to the Teaneck Police Department. Rivlin has been arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual contact and endangering the welfare of a child. The boys were brought here as part of a program called the Scholarship Fund for the Advancement of Children in Israel, which Rivlin partly sponsored. Rivlin was being held at the Bergen County Jail on $175,000 bail. Investigators are working to determine if Uzi Rivlin victimized any other young people - under the guise of helping them.

An Islamic religious leader is charged with a string of sexual offenses against some of his students in Toronto

Mohammad Masroor, 48, faces 13 charges and is believed to have traveled extensively around the world, raising fears that there are other victims. He was arrested in a case involving five people, both male and female. He is the Imam of the Baitul Mukarram Islamic Society. He has lived in Asia, Europe and most recently Florida, Michigan and Bangladesh. Det.-Const. Karen Armstrong said that he has been in Canada since 2008. Armstrong said that the suspect used his position of authority but stopped short of calling him a sexual predator. Armstrong said that it was a three-week investigation and police refused to reveal any information about court appearances. The allegations deal with sexual related offenses and threatening death. Police said that the suspect taught the Koran both at the mosque and privately at homes.

Variations in mitochondrial DNA are associated with poorer CD4 cell gains after the initiation of antiretroviral therapy in non-Hispanic black patients

Black people who had a certain cluster of variations in mitochondrial DNA were less likely to experience an increase in their CD4 cell count above 100 cells/mm3 after a year of HIV therapy than patients with a differing genetic profile. All the patients had a viral load below 400 copies. There was no evidence of a similar influence of these variations, or haplogroups, of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) on CD4 cell changes in white or Hispanic patients. However, the investigators note that in other research involving Caucasian patients not taking HIV therapy certain haplogroups have been associated with increased progression to AIDS and faster falls in CD4 cell count. They comment that their study provides insight into the contribution of mitochondrial genomics to CD4 cell recovery in individuals of non-European descent.

African American women have higher rates of a type of breast cancer that isn't dependent for growth on the hormones estrogen or progesterone

Black women also have a higher rate of childbearing than do white American women. A new study finds that there is likely a link between those two facts - that bearing a baby to term raises the risk for this type of cancer, called estrogen or progesterone receptor-negative breast cancer. The study also finds that black women who breastfeed their babies can lower their odds of developing this cancer back down again. The study followed a group of 47,000 African American women from 1996 through 2009. Researchers had participants fill out, every two years, a detailed questionnaire assessing a wide range of factors that affect a woman's risk for breast cancer - including weight, age at which they began menstruating, pregnancies and age of first childbearing, birth control or hormone-replacement use, physical activity and alcohol consumption. What they found was that African American women who had given birth to more children were more likely to develop estrogen or progesterone-negative cancer than their peers who had not given birth or who had given birth to only one child. But when a woman with two or more childbirths breastfed her babies, that risk declined considerably. The authors surmised that given the prevalence of infectious diseases in Africa, women of African origins may respond to pregnancy with a particularly strong immune response, which in turn can allow cancers to gain a foothold in the body. Lactation, they noted, appears to blunt that effect. Estrogen or progesterone receptor-negative breast cancers are less common than those that are fueled by those hormones, representing just one in four breast cancers. But they tend to be more aggressive and harder to treat. Despite aggressive public health campaigns touting the benefits - to mother and child - of breastfeeding, the practice is less common among African American women than among white women. Future efforts to promote breastfeeding, wrote the authors, should let African American women know that moms who nurse their babies may also reduce their odds of developing a breast cancer that affects them disproportionately and is difficult to treat.

Forty-five council homes a day will have to be built to house the tidal wave of immigrants in Britain, a shock report reveals

This means that 415,000 extra homes will be needed over the next 25 years - at a cost to taxpayers of £1 billion a year. The findings in the report by pressure group Migration Watch UK are a startling illustration of the immigration time-bomb. The building rate will be the only way to keep families off the streets - unless the current influx of 200,000 a year is stemmed. Waiting lists for social housing in England have mushroomed by 60% over the past eight years, largely due to immigration. The report claimed that just 17% of people born in Britain live in properties owned by local authorities or housing associations. That compares with 80% of migrants from Somalia and 49% of those from Turkey. Migration Watch UK accused politicians of covering up the problem. Chairman Sir Andrew Green said: "Either the Government must cut immigration very substantially as they've promised or they must invest very large sums in the construction of extra social housing."

Race and the performance of high school graduates in English, reading, math, and science

Just 4% of African-Americans met the benchmarks in all four subjects, compared with 11% of Hispanics and American Indians, 15% of Pacific Islanders, 31% of whites, and 41% of Asian-Americans. At least 50% of African-American, Hispanic, and American-Indian students didn’t meet any of the four benchmarks.

Mexican immigrants don't like Mexican immigrants

Nearly all of Greenfield's 16,300 people are Latino — and yet an ugly conflict has been brewing between longer-time residents and newcomers from another part of Mexico. Established residents say a massive influx of migrants from the Mexican state of Oaxaca has changed their city for the worse. Over the past decade, the migrants — Triquis, Mixtecs and other indigenous people who streamed from small mountain villages to Greenfield to plant and pick crops — spurred Greenfield's growth and now make up about a third of the town's population. (They represent up to 30% of farmworkers in California and 17% nationwide, the U.S. Department of Labor says.) They speak their own languages, not Spanish, they keep their own customs, such as arranged marriages, and, despite a long-standing tradition of sanctuary and tolerance in Greenfield, they remain separate. In a town feeling heavily pressured by the economic crisis and gang activity, the influx of Oaxacans and their lack of understanding of U.S. customs has led to an ethnic clash. Rachel Ortiz became so displeased with the new migrants that, after more than five decades in Greenfield, she left her cul-de-sac home and moved to Salinas, 30 miles away. Ortiz and others in newly-formed community groups complained that the Oaxacan families clustered in overcrowded apartments and garages, threw trash into the streets, thronged city parks, held loud parties. Some urinated in public and were involved in break-ins.

Black-on-black-crime: A man was shot dead just hours after two people appeared in court accused of conspiring to kill him in a Facebook murder-for-hire scheme

Authorities are investigating two possible theories in connection with the death of Corey White, 22, in Philadelphia. Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said that police are investigating leads about whether the fatal shooting of White was connected to the Facebook threat or to a previous shooting outside a nightclub in Upper Darby, a Philadelphia suburb. Police believe that another man was the shooter in the nightclub shooting, but they had been trying to track down White for questioning because they believed he may have been the getaway driver. A judge has approved charges including murder solicitation against White's ex-girlfriend London Eley, 19, and murder conspiracy charges against Timothy Bynum, the 18-year-old man who responded to her post.

A black mother who tried to circumcise her three-month-old son at home after reading the Old Testament and watching YouTube videos has been sentenced to five years of probation

Keemonta Peterson avoided jail after pleading guilty to first-degree criminal mistreatment - despite leaving her baby son bleeding for two hours before calling emergency services. The 30-year-old mother of four must also undergo mental health treatment. According to an arrest report Peterson began the operation using a box cutter knife as a scalpel and pliers as a tourniquet.

In California, 76% of Asian students and 71% of white students were proficient or better in English compared with 42% of Latinos and 41% of African Americans

In math, the numbers for California students are 76% for Asians, 61% for whites, 41% for Latinos and 34% for African Americans.

Once again the NAACP complains about racism because blacks are less intelligent than whites

When the New Jersey State Police’s first class of recruits in two years reports for training, only five of 123 will be black. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, of course, is blaming racism for this and wants to go to court. While minorities like Hispanics have gained ground since 2000, the percentage of black troopers has fallen from 8% to 6.4%, state figures show. This is, of course, because Hispanics are more intelligent than blacks. The new State Police class, selected more than a year ago, is more diverse than the current 2,768 troopers. It is 72.4% white, 17.9% Hispanic, 4.9% Asian, 4.1% African-American and 0.8% Native American. But the class is still less diverse than the state, which is 68.6% white and 13.7% black. Of the 263 candidates for the incoming class who passed the written exam, 33 were black. Of those 33, six dropped out and 22 were disqualified for failing a background check. Of course, giving in to NAACP demands will just result in the recruitment of less intelligent police officers, many of whom will have engaged in criminal activity in the past.

The Dutch and multiculturalism

The Dutch are not happy with all the Muslims coming to the Netherlands from poor, less educated parts of Morocco and eastern Turkey, who cling to traditional Islamic values as bulwarks against a secular European society that promotes individualism, gender equality and gay rights. Most of these Muslims don't speak Dutch and see the Netherlands as a decadent society.

Police have charged a Hispanic with raping a 9-year-old child

Cesario Lopez-Nava, 30, faces charges of first-degree rape and taking indecent liberties with a child. He is being held at the Wake County jail under a $2 million bond. Authorities are investigating whether Lopez-Nava is in the country illegally.

A 23-year old illegal immigrant from Honduran has been accused of secretly taking photos up the skirts of women in Connecticut as they shopped for clothes

Police have said that Erik Rios-Carranza is facing 137 counts of voyeurism. Police arrested Rios-Carranza at a Macy’s store in the Westfield Trumbull mall after a security officer saw Rios-Carranza put a small video camera under a young woman’s skirt when she bent to look at clothing. Police found skirt pictures from Trumbull and Milford malls and from a Bristol amusement park on Rios-Carranza’s camera.

David Starkey and black culture

The part of the programme which seems to have most got the Left’s goat is the one where David Starkey says that “the whites have become black.” But again, the cultural point he is making is indisputable. Listen to how many white kids (and Asian kids) choose to speak in black street patois; note the extent to which hip hop and grime garage and their offshoots have penetrated the white mainstream; check out how many white kids like to roll like pimps or perps with their Calvins pulled up to their midriffs and their jean waistbands sagging below their buttocks.

Is anyone seriously going to try to make the case that this isn’t black culture in excelsis? Or does anyone, perhaps, want to persuade me that this is but one tiny and much-exaggerated facet of a broader black culture dominated by opera and madrigal singing and crochet and sonnet-construction and lawn bowls and Shakespeare and new translations of Ovid? If they are capable of doing so then maybe, just maybe, I might accept that there was something demeaning or reductive in Starkey’s comments on black culture. Problem is, I don’t think anyone can. (And I speak, by the way, as someone who quite likes his hop hop and who is very much into the new Kanye West/Jay Z album. But who, listening to it, can’t help noticing that it’s rather more a celebration of gats, hos, casual sex and easy money, than it is an invocation for study, hard work and social conformity.)

To pillory a man for pointing out such a glaringly obvious cultural fact just because he’s white and Right-wing would have been quite wrong even before the riots. Post riots it is positively obscene.

Not just obscene, in fact, but dangerous. Of course, we expect the BBC not to get it. Like the Guardian – and the Labour party – the BBC created the culture that led to these riots, so it’s hardly surprising if it carries on playing the old PC game like the 80s and 90s never went away. But if an up and coming member of Cameron’s Tories hasn’t got the message then we seriously need to worry. The riots were a game changer. The decent majority of this country has moved on. If what David Starkey said was racist, then so are we all.

An unemployed Somali couple and their family have been moved into a luxurious London home worth £2 million - and pay it with a monthly £8,000 housing benefit funded by the British taxpayer

Unemployed Saeed Kahliif, 49, from Somalia, his wife Sayida and their children have been handed the keys to a sprawling six-bedroom home in West Hampstead, in North London. After moving from their Coventry home - which cost £1,000 a month in rent - the new property is thought to be one of the most expensive houses ever paid for by housing benefit. The family have moved from their cheaper house to the exclusive postcode so that they could be nearer their friends and family who live in the capital. Khaliif said that in the three years he has lived in Britain, he and his wife had not worked and were reliant on benefits to support them and their family.

A black thief who was released from a New York jail so she could get a heart transplant is back behind bars - possibly for good - after she was caught shoplifting again

Forty-seven-year-old African-American Diane McCloud was freed by a judge in January 2011 after a doctor said that she had only six months to live if she didn't get a transplant. But a lawyer for the dying Long Island woman said that the new arrest has probably cost her any chance of getting a new heart. After her release, McCloud, who has end-stage heart disease, got into trouble with the court for continuing to smoke cigarettes. She was then arrested and jailed for stealing about $500 in toiletry items from a drug store in July 2011. McCloud sobbed in court as she pleaded guilty to petit larceny charges before Nassau District Court Judge Francis Ricigliano. Just eight months earlier, Judge Ricigliano had halted a previous 15-month sentence for a petit larceny charge. Now she has to finish serving her original sentence, plus additional time in the new theft case - if she lives. Her lawyer, Leonard Isaacs, said that as an inmate, she no longer qualifies for the Medicaid that would have covered a transplant.

A black woman has been accused of child abuse after beating her son with a computer cable for using Facebook without permission

Althea Ricketts, 62 has been charged with aggravated child abuse. Ricketts first found out about her son's account after an acquaintance told her about a disturbing post on his Facebook profile page. Her son had posted a worrying message which indicated that he might try to hurt himself. In an interview with police, the boy, whose age was not released, said that his mother had become angry and beaten him with a cable at their home in Apopka, Florida. An arrest report states that Ricketts called back and told the woman she'd hit her son and he'd run away from home. He was later found at a friend's home with injuries to both arms, police said. The boy was nervous and crying when he arrived at the friend's house police were told. One resident said that when confronted Ricketts had said that the boy deserved everything he got. Arresting documents state that Ricketts told police that the boy had lied to her about having the page, and that she'd become angry and hit him with a computer cable inside their home. The arresting officer wrote in a report that Ricketts said that hitting a child with a cable is a common way of disciplining kids where she comes from.

A Brazilian judge renowned for her work against organized crime has been shot dead in Rio de Janeiro State

Patricia Acioli was gunned down outside her home in the city of Niteroi by masked men traveling on two motorbikes, officials said. She was best known for convicting members of vigilante gangs and corrupt police officers. The judge's family said that she had received several death threats, but had not had a police escort. The gunmen intercepted the mother-of-three's car as she was arriving at home in Niteroi, just across Guanabara Bay from Rio de Janeiro. They had fired at least 16 shots, killing the 47-year-old instantly, reports said. Rio has stepped up its campaign against violent crime ahead of hosting football's World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016.

African university runs out of paper

University students at Sierra Leone's respected Fourah Bay College were unable to take their final exams because of a lack of paper. The principal, Prof Thomas Yormah, told the more than 4,000 angry students on campus that the exams were postponed until new stationary arrived. In February 2011, the college's first semester exams were delayed by two weeks as it lacked classroom furniture. Prof Yormah said that there had been some hitch in preparing the examination booklets, but promised a commission of enquiry would get to the bottom of the matter. "I'm very disappointed that Fourah Bay College, once the Athens of West Africa, is faced with this embarrassing situation," student activist Siman-Allie Mans-Conteh said about the exam debacle. Another student felt there was no excuse for the college authorities to be so disorganized. "Students have paid their fees and we expect the management to ensure that students take their exams on time," he said. Prof Yormah admitted that the situation was embarrassing. "But you have to understand we do not have adequate resources to cater for the demands that we have for our programs," he said. The college - which is part of the University of Sierra Leone - complains that the fees they are allowed to charge students are very low, ranging from between $200 and $800 a year. The central government does not allow for increased fees and the subsidy it receives is paltry, the college says. It is common to see students at the college standing outside a classroom listening in to a lecture, or lectures being held outdoors. Those who have space in the classrooms sit on benches not chairs.

Obama has seen his numbers drop sharply since a June 2011 Quinnipiac survey in which 57% approved of his performance and 38% did not. The poll's director, Maurice Carroll, said in a statement that the congressional drama over raising the nation's debt ceiling devastated Barack Obama's numbers even in true blue New York.

The black school girl, who is thought to have been named after the sub-machine gun, is charged with second degree murder after the Easter shooting of another teen. Nathaniel Walcott, also 16 and black, was gunned down while riding his child-sized bicycle in Brooklyn, New York City. Sahiah Davis, a newly inaugurated member of the Wave Gang, had been ordered to take down a member of her former crew, the Hood Starz, police sources said. Nathaniel, the son of a retired city correction officer, was shot in the lower back as he rode his bicycle near his home in Brooklyn. Police responding to a 911 call found the 16-year-old lying in a pool of blood near a playground park. He was rushed to hospital where he later died. Nathaniel had been visiting his parents in Brooklyn for Easter from a juvenile reform center in Westchester, in upstate New York. The troubled teen had spent the previous 18 months there, following disciplinary problems at school. A judge ordered that the 5-foot-11 schoolgirl be held without bail on murder and gun possession charges.

A South Asian father of two in Birmingham was one of the first people in Britain to be jailed over the riots

Imran Khan, aged 23, attacked a police officer in Arden Road, Saltley. He has admitted using threatening words and behavior and assaulting a police constable and was jailed for ten weeks at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court. Khan was among several people who appeared in court in Birmingham and Wolverhampton in connection with the unrest. Those appearing in Birmingham included Munir Zaman, aged 20, admitted burgling JD Sports in the Bullring. Amerpreet Gill, aged 23, and Gurmeet Tarmeet, 35, were also charged with burgling JD Sports, and were remanded for a week. Ayub Ahmed, aged 23, has admitted handling stolen goods.

The graduation rate is 68% for Latinos in California

In California, the graduation rate is 59% for African American students and 56% for students who are learning English. This compares with 83.4% for whites and 89.4% for Asians.

A half-century after the long hot summers of the 1960s and two decades after the worst riot in U.S. history since the New York draft riots of 1863—the Los Angeles riot of 1992, in which blacks and Hispanics attacked Koreans and whites—the "next time" may have arrived.

In Europe, the harbinger of the new century came a half-decade ago when North African youths in the Paris banlieues went on a days-long rampage of firebombing cars and attacking police and firemen, many of whom drove off and let the fires burn out.

This week, it was London's turn. And when the fires burn out, we shall hear anew the old liberal litany about poverty, despair, inequality and unemployment, the excuses that long ago ceased to persuade.

For poverty existed in far greater measure in the Depression. Yet our parents and grandparents did not form mobs to burn, beat and loot.

The West is in decline because the character of its people is in decline. In Europe, Christianity is dead. The moral code it gave men to live righteously is regarded with mockery. The London riots were the work of moral barbarians with no loyalty to the people in whose midst they live and no love for the society to which they give nothing, only take.

In America, millions of fatherless young seek out in gangs the familial ties they never knew. Those gangs are now almost always formed on the basis of ethnicity or race.

Jose Perez Hernandez, 18, left the Special Victims Unit after being charged in connection with the series of gropings. Hernandez has been charged with burglary, sexual abuse and forcibly touching several women. Police picked up Hernandez at an apartment in Queens following a tip from a building superintendent on the Upper East Side. Investigators said that the super recognized the suspect from a sketch. Hernandez worked as a dishwasher at an Italian restaurant on East 81st Street. He was placed in a lineup and charged in connection with three of the gropings. The restaurant owner said that the Hispanic suspect had worked there until recently. He thought that Hernandez resembled the suspect’s photo put out by police, but felt he didn’t have enough information to call police. Tips from the superintendent allowed police to trace the teen to a residence in Queens. For months, many women in the area were wary of being grabbed or fondled by the 4’11″ man. Police said that he was captured on surveillance camera, and is responsible for several incidents dating back to May 2011. Police said that the suspect grabbed women from behind, oftentimes lifting a skirt. All the women approached were in their 20s and early 30s. In the latest incident, a 28-year-old woman told police that she was walking on a path in Central Park when she was approached by the suspect. Investigators said that she fought back, kicking, punching and poking him in the eye.

A black woman will stay in jail after deputies say that she attacked another woman while helping her load groceries into her car

Whitney Deandra Wilson, 21, has been charged with robbery and assault in connection with the attack, which Sheriff James Metts said happened at the Food Lion on St. Andrews Road. A judge denied Wilson's bond. Metts said that Linda Sarvis Canady, 64, of Columbia, was bagging her groceries to take them to her car when Wilson offered to help load the groceries into Canady's car. Canady said that she was grateful when Wilson came over to help, because she's disabled and has difficulty reaching some items. "I thought that girl fell right out of heaven," said Canady. "I needed help this afternoon." But what happened next caught Candy by surprise. When she got in the driver's seat and started the car to provide air conditioning, Metts said that Wilson hit Canady in the forehead with a can she had taken from the grocery bags. "It was so fast, I'm telling you," said Canady. "Right in the middle of my head. My body was saturated with blood." Metts said that Wilson ran toward Landmark Apartments with Canady's wallet. "I ran after her with my car," said Canady. "I was gonna catch her and tell her what she did. I just wanted to stop her." Investigators were able to take still pictures from the surveillance video and show them to area businesses and identify Wilson. Metts said that Wilson gave investigators a statement about the incident after her arrest. Now with 19 stitches on her forehead and two black eyes, Canady says that the incident was a wake-up call. Next time she won't be so trusting with strangers who put up a nice front. "I want somebody to ask her why did she want to hurt me," she said. "I still don't know it."

A Hispanic home repairman has been charged with felony theft after he tried to hide the evidence by gulping it down, presumably without chewing first

Prosecutors say that 30-year-old Wilfredo Gonzalez was helping remodel a home in Cicero, Illinois, when he stole a diamond ring that the homeowner had left in her bathroom. When she realized the ring was missing, the homeowner had her husband confront Gonzalez, according to the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. The repairman at first denied taking the ring. But when the confrontation turned into a struggle, prosecutors say that he pulled the ring out of the place he had hidden it and swallowed it. Police were called and took Gonzalez to MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, where a stomach X-ray revealed that the missing ring was working its way down his gastrointestinal tract. Gonzalez was given medication to force the expulsion of the ring and was then put in a rubber room with bedpans. Gonzalez appeared at the Maywood Courthouse, where bail was set at $10,000 by Cook County Judge James Shapiro. Gonzalez faces up to three years in prison if convicted.

Amanda Borsos was shot and killed on her 17th birthday in Ohio by her black ex-boyfriend Troy Penn

Amanda Borsos was at work at the Four Paws Pet Care and Kennel when her black ex-boyfriend of one week, Troy Penn, 18, fatally shot her with a single blast to the torso. It is unclear where Penn got the gun but there was speculation that he was bitter about the breakup, according to Chief Deputy John Newsom.

The mother of black twins arrested for looting in Brixton has claimed that she thought her two sons had gone to the gym

Linette Livingstone said that she was horrified to discover that her 19-year-old sons Icha and Micha had both been arrested following the disturbances. The pair were some of the first people to be remanded in custody over the looting. They are accused of taking part in the raid of a Curry's store in Brixton. The judge said that he was remanding the defendants in custody because he ruled they may rejoin the rioting if they were released.

Islamic online forums are abuzz with calls to Muslims in Britain to launch Internet campaigns in support of the rioters and to urge them to topple the British government

Islamic contributors have suggested that Muslims in Britain should flood social media websites, such as Facebook and Twitter, with slogans and writings inciting the mostly black youth to continue rioting.

80% of Muslims in the United States approve of the way that Barack Obama is handling his job as president, according to a survey conducted by the Abu Dhabi Gallup Center, a partnership between Gallup and the Crown Prince Court of Abu Dhabi. According to the survey, 65% of Jews in the United States approve of the job Obama is doing; 60% of atheists, agnostics, and those of no religion approve; 50% of Catholics approve; 37% of Protestants approve and 25% of Mormons approve. Obama’s approval among Muslims in the United States has declined since 2009 but still remains far higher than the approval that President George W. Bush’s won among the Islamic group in 2008. In that year, only 7% of Muslims in the United States said that they approved of the job Bush was doing. In 2009, 84% of Muslims in the United States said that they approved of the job Obama was doing. That dropped to 78% in 2010 and then rose to 80% in 2011.

Jurors in Cleveland, Ohio, have recommended that convicted black serial killer Anthony Sowell be sentenced to death

Cuyahoga County Judge Dick Ambrose read the recommendations in court. The judge can overrule those recommendations and impose a life sentence. Jurors had convicted Sowell of 11 counts of aggravated murder and more than 70 other charges, including abusing corpses and kidnapping. The convictions ended a saga that began in October 2009 with the discovery of the first two victims' remains inside Sowell's home in Cleveland. He eventually was accused of killing at least 11 women ranging in age from 25 to 52. Prosecutors were seeking the death penalty and the 12-person jury voted unanimously to recommend a death sentence be imposed for each of the slayings. In 2009, police found the bodies of 11 women at Sowell's Cleveland home - all of them strangled to death.

Black father tries to make money off of his children's deaths

The black father of three children who drowned in the Hudson River says that the City of Newburgh and Orange County each owe him $40 million. Jean Pierre has filed a notice of claim alleging the city permitted a "dangerous/hazardous condition" at its waterfront boat ramp. Pierre's estranged girlfriend, LaShanda Armstrong, killed herself and three of her four children when she drove her minivan down the ramp and into the Hudson River. The fourth child, 10-year-old La'Shaun Armstrong, escaped through a van window and swam to safety. Pierre said that there should have been some kind of barrier or other control to keep people from driving into the water. Pierre also says that Orange County should have known for months the kids were in danger. In a second notice of claim, he said that the county Department of Child Protective Services had the responsibility to monitor Armstrong, 25, and the children ever since 2-year-old Landen Pierre was discovered, half-dressed and wandering the streets in the cold of early morning. Pierre was supposed to be watching the boy that night and was arrested after Newburgh police discovered he had left Landen alone while he went to a gas station. A Newburgh judge later granted a temporary order of protection against Pierre and adjourned the case in contemplation of dismissal. Neighbors said that they heard Pierre pounding on Armstrong's door and shouting at her from the sidewalk, less than an hour before Armstrong loaded the kids into the minivan. Armstrong's aunt Angela Gilliam was surprised to hear about Pierre's high-dollar claims. "Someone should file a claim against him," Gilliam said. "Forty million? Are you kidding me?" Gilliam said that her side of the family hadn't heard anything from Pierre, who has moved to Georgia.

Gay senator David Norris is withdrawing his bid for President of Ireland after it was revealed that he sought clemency for a former partner convicted of the statutory rape of a 15-year-old boy

The revelation dealt a mortal blow to Norris’ campaign, which was also sustained damage when the candidate’s remarks supporting “classical pedophilia” were republished in 2011. Norris had said in a 2002 interview that he does not believe in an age of consent law for sexual activity, remarks the interviewer later called “deeply disturbing.” Norris also reportedly confirmed this belief in a letter to supporters in 2011. Norris’ decision to withdraw was announced amidst revelations that he had sent a clemency letter to Israeli authorities on behalf of his former homosexual partner, Ezra Yizhak Nawi. Nawi was convicted in an Israeli court in 1997 of the statutory rape of a 15-year-old Palestinian boy. Norris continued his relationship with Nawi for four years after his conviction. The revelations prompted three members of the Irish Parliament, Finian McGrath, John Halligan and Thomas Pringle, to formally withdraw their support for the Senator. Two of Norris’ key staff members, director of communications Jane Cregan and director of elections Derek Murphy, also announced their resignation. In a statement this afternoon outside his Dublin home, Norris said that he did not regret supporting Nawi but admitted that he now considers himself to have been “wrong.”

Genetic differences between people account for up to half of the variation in intelligence, according to a study of more than 3,000 individuals

Intelligence is known to run in families, but no single genes have yet been identified that can be reliably linked to mental ability. Instead, researchers think, many hundreds or thousands of genes could be involved, each with a small influence on a person's overall intelligence. "It has been getting clearer and clearer that any genetic contribution to traits on which people differ – like height and weight – comes about from large numbers of gene differences, each with very small effects," said Prof Ian Deary of the University of Edinburgh, who led the research on intelligence. "We thought that was one possibility for cognitive ability differences, and our results are compatible with that." To test his idea, researchers looked at more than half a million locations in the genetic code of 3,511 unrelated adults. Each of these sites is where people are known to have single-letter variations in their DNA, called single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). These variations were correlated with the individuals' performance in two types of psychometric tests that are established in assessing intelligence: one test measuring recalled knowledge (via vocabulary) and the second measuring problem-solving skills. They found that 40% of the variation in knowledge (called "crystallized intelligence" by the researchers) and 51% of the variation in problem-solving skills ("fluid-type intelligence") between individuals could be accounted for by the differences in DNA. Previous work on the environmental and genetic contributions to cognitive ability has been based on comparing intelligence in identical and non-identical twins, or studying it in people who were adopted. In the study led by Deary, the conclusions were gleaned from direct testing of people's DNA. "It is the first to show biologically and unequivocally that human intelligence is highly polygenic [involving lots of genes] and that purely genetic (SNP) information can be used to predict intelligence," Deary wrote.

Nearly one third of Tanzanian girls experience sexual violence before they turn 18, a UNICEF survey has found

The figure among boys is 13.4%, says the UN children's agency. The most common form of abuse is sexual touching, followed by attempted intercourse, it says. The survey also found that of those who had sex before they turned 18, 29.1% of females and 17.5% of males reported that their first encounter was unwilling. This meant they were forced or coerced to engage in sexual intercourse, UNICEF said.

AIDS is on the rise in many Muslim countries, driven by men having sex with other men in secret because of homophobia, religious intolerance and fear of being jailed or executed, according to a new study

About 2% - 3% of men in the region have sex with other men, consistent with global averages, the study found. But condom use is low, gay and bisexual prostitution is common, and many married men hide their bisexuality and risk infecting their wives. In some countries, even male prostitutes often marry for appearances’ sake. Truck drivers, prisoners and street children often have high rates of H.I.V. infection; in Pakistan, infection rates are rising rapidly among transgender prostitutes known as hijra. The lowest rates of condom use were reported in populous countries like Egypt and Pakistan, while they were highest in Sudan, Oman and Lebanon. To fight their nascent epidemics, some countries have adopted compulsory H.I.V. testing for marriage licenses and work visas. Because of religious taboos, accurate statistics on some aspects of health are hard to get from Middle Eastern governments. For example, international health authorities say that the world’s highest rates of birth defects are in Muslim countries where cousins are encouraged to marry but that governments are reluctant to admit it.

A hard-partying African-American ladies' man with a criminal past has been hauled into court on charges that he swiped $1 million from JPMorgan Chase by seducing bank tellers

Richard Dames, who calls himself Geovanni Kasanova, and five others were named in a 148-count indictment charging that they stole the identities of 80 victims in a scheme that ran from 2009 to 2011. Dames, 33, was one of the leaders of a large-scale identity theft ring and a Manhattan judge has ordered him to be held on $500,000 bail. Dames' long rap sheet includes a 2004 grand larceny conviction. Among his co-conspirators are two tellers, who were in love with him. Kia Wylie, 30, who pleaded not guilty to selling the stolen identities of nine account-holders to Dames, had a love letter she wrote him in her desk drawer, officials said. Malika Williams also pleaded not guilty. Dames picked up the 25-year-old Williams at a bar and convinced her that their relationship was real. Dames, who appeared in court with his underwear sticking out of his jeans, didn't deny that he has a way with the ladies when he was first arrested and asked about Williams. "I know several Malikas," he told cops, court papers say. Prosecutors in Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance Jr.'s office said that Williams knew what she was doing and stole the identities of 16 victims from her work computer - and Dames paid her for the information. Two male bank employees were also recruited to mine bank computers for dates of births, social security numbers and other personal data of victims. The corrupt employees also copied account holders' bank signature cards so that ring members could imitate a victim's signature as they opened new accounts. Dames and two other men are charged with using the data to open credit card and eTrade accounts and make cash withdrawals. They also pick-pocketed victims to steal their identities, officials said. They each face up to 25 years in prison.

The black gunman who fatally wounded a police officer, left a suicide note before going on a shooting spree, officials have said

San Diego-based officer Jeremy Henwood was pulling away from traffic lights when Dejon Marquee White's car pulled up alongside him and he unloaded his shotgun. Following the unprovoked attack, police later cornered the armed 23-year-old and killed him. After searching his apartment, they found a two-page suicide note. Sitting alone in his car the 36-year-old policeman was attacked by White, and died in hospital. Investigators have said that they can determine no motive for the shooting of the police officer. Before the shooting White was described as a petty criminal, and he had previously resisted arrest and performed minor thefts.

A British school with more than 400 pupils has only four for whom English is their mother tongue

In one of Britain’s most extreme cases, it has emerged that less than 1% of pupils at Bradford Moor Community Primary School speak English as their first language. The school is in one of the city’s most deprived areas, and 90% of the 417 pupils are from Pakistan. Many arrive at the school unable to speak a word of English. Almost one million children in Britain speak English as a second language. At another school, St Matthew’s Primary School in Redhill, Surrey, 44 languages are spoken.

John Russell Carver faces a 12 count indictment that includes rape, armed robbery, false imprisonment and burglary. Police say that he beat, assaulted and robbed a woman in February 2011 at the St. Timothy United Methodist Church in Stone Mountain. Detectives say that DNA links him to the attack.

A housekeeper has accused a Korean Buddhist monk and his family of forcing her to work as a slave in their Queens home

The family kept the woman as a prisoner in their Queens home for 12 years under threat of death. The woman says that the family allowed her outside occasionally but used threats to keep her from reporting them. A lawsuit has been filed by Oak-Jin Oh in Manhattan federal court. It names Soo Bok Choi, a Buddhist monk, two of his brothers, his son and daughter, a niece and the representative of the estate of his mother, who died in 2009. The suit says that Oh was introduced to the family in 1998 by a South Korea employment agency. She agreed to work for about $1,200 a month. The suit says that she never had a day off in 12 years, and often worked 14-hour days or longer. She escaped with the help of a family friend.

We are still losing jobs

The White House was delighted when the unemployment rate dropped to 9.1% and 117,000 jobs were reportedly created in July 2011. But these numbers, upon closer inspection, show no progress on the jobs front. Buried in the job statistics was a number — 193,000 — that dwarfed all the rest. That is the number of workers who left the job market. If 193,000 left and only 117,000 jobs were added, we lost 76,000 jobs. When President Obama took office in January of 2009, the labor participation rate was 65.7%. Now it is only 63.9% which is the lowest level since 1984. If the labor force participation rate at present were 65.7%, there would be an additional 4.2 million people in the workforce. In that case, the unemployment rate would be 11.5%, not 9.1%. It only looks like the unemployment rate is dropping because unemployed people have become discouraged and stopped looking for work.

A convicted black felon has been sentenced to 55 years in prison for kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 13-year-old boy in 2008

James Beamon, 40, of Chicago was convicted in June 2011 of aggravated criminal sexual assault and aggravated kidnapping, according to a release from the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office. Cook County Judge William Lacy has sentenced Beamon to 55 years. According to prosecutors, on July 20, 2008, Beamon lured the boy to an abandoned building and told the boy he could earn money by helping him clean the building. The teen, who wanted money to help buy school supplies, agreed. That’s when Beamon and the boy entered an abandoned building through a window, the release said. Beamon then ordered the boy to remove his clothing. The defendant put his hands behind his back as if he had a gun and threatened to shoot the victim if he left. Beamon then sexually assaulted the victim, prosecutors said. The boy threw an object at Beamon and escaped from the building through a window, running naked into the street, the release said. An off duty Cook County Deputy Sheriff saw the victim and came to his aid. The sheriff located the defendant and detained him until Chicago police arrived and arrested him. At the time of this incident Beamon was on parole for a 1990 murder and attempted murder conviction. He had been released on parole in June of 2008 after serving 18 years in prison.

A 17-year-old black male has been charged with murder in connection with the stabbing death of a blind man

Donnell Graham has been charged with first- and second-degree murder of Patrick Xavier Ward, according to Monica Worrell, spokeswoman for the Harford County Sheriff's Office. Graham was arrested at his apartment by police, who tracked him with a K-9 unit. Worrell said in a press release that Graham was trying to burglarize Ward's apartment. Ward startled Graham, who then stabbed him multiple times and fled the area. Neighbors entered Ward's apartment through his balcony as they saw the suspect flee the scene. Ward, who was legally blind, was 29. Graham has also been charged with first- and second-degree assault and possession of a deadly weapon with intent to injure. He is being held without bail at the Harford County Detention Center. A witness said that Ward was stabbed four times in the chest. He was pronounced dead upon arrival to the Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, Worrell said.

Aslam Parvez, 53, blames members of the Muslim community who believe that the family have been dishonored by his daughter's marriage. The hate campaign started when a national magazine published an article on albinos which featured Naseem, who no longer lives in Coventry and has little contact with her family. It revealed how she has married a Christian, goes to church and is expecting her second child with her husband. Parvez says that copies of the article were quickly spread maliciously, and were posted on walls near their house and through the doors of Muslim homes in the community. Parvez says that he has received numerous death threats and has spent hundreds of pounds installing security cameras around his house. He has now stopped going to mosque and says that he may be forced to flee the city with his wife Shameem Akhtar, 55, three sons Mohammed, 17, Haider, 28, Gulam, 30, and daughters Muqadas, 26 and Musarat, 19. Parvez was born in Pakistan and moved to Britain at the age of 10 to join his family. He later met and married Shameem, who is also an albino. Their six children inherited their parents' condition, which causes an absence of pigmentation and partial sightedness.

Amid heavy downpours, a black mother and daughter suspected of shoplifting at a Charlotte coat store ran into a swollen, fast-moving stream. Police found the mother’s body at the bottom of the creek, and now it is being reported that search crews have found the body of her 16-year-old daughter. Police identified the dead woman as Gracie Nell Johnson, 43, and her daughter Rihanna Johnson, 16. Johnson and two others were at a Burlington Coat Factory in the city when a store employee called police to report shoplifting, according to a statement from police. One of the trio was taken into custody, while Johnson and her daughter ran. A store employee chased them, and all three plunged into a creek near the shopping center. The worker made it out, but Johnson and her daughter were swept away. Gracie Johnson’s ankle bracelet lead police to her body.

No bail was set for Sharia Pettiford, 32, who was charged under the child neglect statute. Police say it appeared that she was drunk. Judge Richard Nieto said that Pettiford's bail would have to be set by a Superior Court judge. The black man she was with, Kevin D. Jackson, 34, also appeared in court, hit with drug possession charges after police found a blunt and three bags of suspected marijuana in a pack of cigarettes he was carrying. Jackson charges amount to a misdemeanor and his case will be heard in municipal court. Officers responding to a report of a baby alone in a car spotted Pettiford and Jackson, who immediately began walking away in opposite directions. Jackson was attempting to discard the pack of cigarettes and was arrested when the cops took a look inside. Pettiford told police that she and Jackson were drinking and had driven to Waldo Avenue to visit a friend, adding that she said she had her baby with her but that she couldn't remember where he was. Jackson told the officers that the vehicle was parked about 100 yards away and inside they found the baby had apparently fallen off the back seat and was lying on the floor. An ambulance was called. Police said that the Subaru was a mess and the child seat was unsecured, lying on its side and there was a partially unwrapped chicken sandwich smashed against it. Pettiford was charged with abandoning the baby and taken into custody. The baby was taken to the Jersey City Medical Center, where he was found to be in good health. A case worker for the state Division of Youth and Family Services responded to the hospital and took custody of the child. At the hearing, Nieto noted Pettiford had three outstanding warrants for her arrest out of Jersey City for theft, being drunk in public, and possession of drug paraphernalia, with bails totaling more than $750. Nieto said that Jackson had two warrants for his arrest out of Jersey City for motor vehicle offenses, with bails totaling $450.

Tesfaye Bramble, an ex-footballer, had denied raping his victim at the Vermont Hotel in Newcastle in September 2010. The 31-year-old, from Ipswich, was found guilty after a trial at Leeds Crown Court earlier in 2011. He has been jailed for four-and-half years by the same court. Sentencing him, Judge Geoffrey Marson QC said that Tesfaye Bramble had shown not a shred of remorse. The victim, who is now 20, said that the incident happened after she met the Bramble brothers and their entourage in the VIP section of Madame Koo's bar, Newcastle, on September 22, 2010. The trial heard that the footballers were in the bar following a Sunderland match and had booked three rooms at the Vermont. The woman said that one of the men, Simon Pharaoh, helped her take her drunken friend home to Jesmond. She then drove him back to the hotel and accepted his invitation to go in. The victim said that, after chatting to the group, she went to sleep. Tesfaye Bramble claimed he had got into the bed to try his luck and that sex had been consensual. The trial heard the woman left the hotel shortly afterwards. She said: "As I was driving, I was retching. I was in shock. I cried like I've never cried in my life." Sentencing Tesfaye Bramble, Judge Marson said: "It has been described as opportunistic and it was to some extent. There was only one reason why you went back to the room... and that was to have sexual intercourse with her. I am entirely satisfied she was asleep at the time and was incapable of giving her consent and you knew it. You, and those involved in such activities, seem to have an attitude borne out by the contents of the pre-sentence report that says when young women go back to hotels in those circumstances with footballers, they go back for one reason only and that is to have sexual intercourse. They have a right to be protected and she had a right to be there and to be left alone and you abused it." After the sentencing, Acting Det Insp Phil Mordue, of Northumbria Police's rape investigation team, said: "This was a difficult trial for the victim in this case, who should be praised for the strength, courage and belief she showed throughout."

Nearly seven years after she was killed, police say that they've found the black man who killed Gina Gruenwald

Gruenwald's body was found on August 21, 2004 in the Capitol Hill area of Denver, Colorado. Friends had dropped her off after a night out and her body was found just four blocks away the following morning. She had been stabbed in the neck. The crime scene showed that Gruenwald had struggled with the person who killed her, including a bite mark made by the attacker. It's that bite mark, which left behind DNA, that led prosecutors to charge 42-year-old Billy Wilson. Wilson is said to be a homeless black man who was arrested earlier in 2011 on an unrelated case in San Francisco. A DNA sample obtained from Wilson was entered into a national database and was a match for Gruenwald's case. Wilson is now charged with murder in the case. He's expected to be returned to Denver in the coming weeks. Gruenwald was an all-state softball player at Bixby High School. She had just moved to Denver about a year before she was killed.

Through the first half of 2011, Mexico’s military found 103 meth labs, 25% more than in 2010, when a record 6.2 tons of the synthetic drug were seized at the US border. Already in 2011, authorities have seized nearly that much. Though the number of US meth labs is rising, 96% of those busted in 2010 couldn't produce more than two ounces of the drug — just enough for personal use, leaving mass production to Mexico. In recent weeks, Mexican authorities discovered a warehouse holding 839 tons of meth and ecstasy ingredients. With a gram of meth going for some $100, hundreds of millions of dollars could be at stake. Half a million Americans are believed to be users and synthetic drugs, notes a Mexican official, can be produced in only a few hours with higher dividends, unlike marijuana whose harvest takes months and requires more manpower.

The officers' desertion has left the 13,000 people of Ascension without local police services, Chihuahua state chief prosecutor Carlos Manuel Salas said. The mass walk-out appeared to be in protest to a recent attack by gunmen that killed three of the town's officers, Salas said. State and federal police have moved in to take over police work. But it wasn't the first deadly attack on the police department in 2011. Recently, police chief Manuel Martinez, who had been in office just seven months, was gunned down with two other officers on a nearby highway. The three had been kidnapped a day before police found their bodies blasted with bullets in the back seat of a car. The town's police force was relatively new when the bloody attacks on the officers began. The previous force had been accused by angry residents of helping drug gangs and had been forced to leave.

The execution-style massacre was carried out in the busy Wedding district of the city and was witnessed by horrified shoppers and commuters. It may have been an Islamic honor killing as the car apparently contained the 24-year-old ex-wife of the gunman, who survived the ordeal. The driver, despite being shot in the head and shoulder, also survived, but the woman’s mother, 45, and younger sister, 22, who were both sitting in the back seat with her, died. Police identified the gunman as a 26-year-old Turk called Mehmet Y, who fled the scene. It’s believed that he was married to the 24-year-old woman passenger for four months. Wedding is a district that’s popular with Berlin’s Turkish community, which one neighbor described as socially difficult. Police are hunting the killer, who they warn could still be armed. Berlin suffered a spate of honor killings in 2005, when six Muslim women in the city were killed in the space of four months. They were killed by family members angry at their embracing of Western lifestyles. One, 23-year-old Hatin Surucu, was shot dead by her younger brother, Ayhan, while her five-year-old son slept in his bed. She had divorced a cousin she was forced to marry at the age of 16, ditched her headscarf and enrolled at a technical college to train to be an electrician. She began receiving death threats, which she reported to the police, but they were unable to prevent her cold-blooded murder.

A 12-year-old Chinese boy has been chained up by his uncle for the past couple of years

It’s claimed that this is for his own safety because he’s mentally handicapped. Cai Changqing, from Erlongshan village in Harbin, north-east China's Heilongjiang Province, is shackled each day to a shabby shelter outside his uncle's home. The uncle, Cai Quan, says that he has to chain his nephew up because, otherwise, he runs away. In 2009, Changqing ran out into the road in the city and was severely injured after being run over by a van. Quan was left to care for Changqing after the boy's mother died and his father was left paralysed from an accident. Following the van accident Changqing started to chain his nephew up each day, using a 16ft-long length of iron chain wrapped around the youngster's waist. His treatment brings to mind other instances of cruelty to children in China. In December 2010, pictures emerged of 12-year-old twins Li Luqin and Li Shuangqin tied up by their father Li Wancheng in Yunnan Province. He began binding them ten years ago for fear that they would hurt themselves. The family currently lives along the roadside in China’s Yunnan Province. The father is trying to save enough money to get medical treatment for the girls. He is adamant that his daughters are not safe to be allowed to roam and the pair have to make do with a life that involves being tied to a fence or a tree – or to each other – every day. Another shocking case that came to light in 2010 was that of a two-year-old boy, Cheng Jingdan, who was pictured chained to a lamp post to stop him getting away while his father worked as a rickshaw driver and his handicapped mother scavenged through garbage.

Nearly three quarters of Britons think that there are too many immigrants in Britain, a survey has revealed

The international poll, by IPSOS Mori, ranked Britain as third highest in a league table of 23 countries according to concerns about migrant numbers. And it showed that Britain topped the table of countries according to concerns over the impact of migrants on public services. Some 76% of those questioned said that immigration had put too much pressure on hospitals, transport services and schools. The poll exposes the huge on-going scale of public worry over migration levels. Under Labor’s open door immigration policy, the population was boosted by more than 3.2 million arrivals from overseas. Some 71% of Britons agreed that there are too many immigrants in Britain. Only Russians (77%) and Belgians (72%) were more concerned about migrant numbers. A total of 76% of Britons agreed that immigration had put too much pressure on public services, putting Britain on top of the table ahead of Spain (70%), Belgium (68%) and the United States (66%). Britain was third in the table of attitudes to migrant workers and jobs. Sixty-two per cent said that migrants meant it was more difficult to find jobs in Britain. In Russia the figure was 75% and South Africa 64%. Just one in four (27%) said that immigration was good for the economy. Only one third (33%) of Britons felt that migrants made Britain a more interesting place to live. Clearly people in Britain are concerned how immigration is affecting their employment opportunities; the strain on public services; and impact on a sluggish economy. These concerns are also reflected in many countries around the world.

The number of Americans newly infected with HIV remained stable between 2006 and 2009, but infections rose nearly 50% among young black gay and bisexual men

While blacks represent 14% of the U.S. population, they accounted for 44% of new HIV infections in 2009. HIV infection rates among blacks were nearly eight times higher than rates in whites. Hispanics, who represent about 16% of the population, accounted for 20% of new HIV infections in 2009 - a rate that was nearly three times as high as that of whites. Men who have sex with men - which includes openly gay and bisexual men and those who do not identify themselves as gay or bisexual - remain the most heavily affected. While this group represents 2% of the overall U.S. population, they accounted for 61% of all new HIV infections in 2009. And young men who have sex with men - those aged 13 to 29 - are the hardest hit, accounting for more than one quarter of all new HIV infections nationally. New HIV infections affected young men who have sex with men of all races, but the CDC saw very sharp increases among young black men who have sex with men. What are some of the possible reasons for this racial difference? Young black men who have sex with men may be less aware of their infection status. They may encounter more homophobia than other groups, which could keep them from getting tested. They may have higher rates of other sexually transmitted diseases, which increases the risk of HIV transmission. To help fight HIV, the CDC will focus on areas where HIV infection is most heavily concentrated - among gay and bisexual men of all races, blacks and Hispanics.

Vali Chapti, an Indian farmer who wants to join his wife in Leicester, also insisted that he would never learn English. He says that he could easily get by without English because there were many Gujarati speakers in Leicester and it would be the main language where he would live. The 57-year-old also branded Britain’s immigration system racist and discriminatory and said that his human rights had been breached in a disgraceful way by rules introduced by Home Secretary Theresa May requiring immigrants to have a basic command of English. His wife Rashida, 54, has begun a court challenge funded by legal aid against the rules, which are aimed at ensuring that immigrants could integrate into British society. Chapti said he was confident his case would be successful and added that hoped to bring one of his sons with him to Britain.

A 9-year-old boy will beg a judge not to throw his black father in prison - even though the monster dad beat him, burned him and stuffed him into an oven

James Moss, 53, pleaded guilty to torturing his son Christopher because he thought that the boy had stolen $20 from his wallet. Moss faces up to seven years in prison for the attack on his forgiving son. "In over 15 years as a district attorney and an assistant district attorney, this was one of the most shocking and sadistic cases of child abuse I have ever prosecuted," said Staten Island District Attorney Daniel Donovan. The 6-foot-2, 270-pound dad threatened to kill the boy on May 12, 2010, at their Staten Island home, authorities said. Moss took Christopher to the basement and ripped off his clothes. Then he pulled the boy into the kitchen and used a spatula to beat him across his back. The demon dad heated up two burners on the stove and held the defenseless boy's hands on them until his skin began to peel. Prosecutors said that Moss punched his son in the face and then forced him into the oven. "I'm going to burn you alive!" he yelled, according to law enforcement sources. Donovan said that the boy screamed and begged to be let out of the oven, as his father threatened to turn it on. Moss eventually let him out and threw the boy, still naked, out the front door. The boy's young sister pleaded with the dad to let her brother back inside. Skin was falling off the boy's burned hands, but Moss ignored his son's pain and never took him to a hospital, court papers say. Instead, Moss let him inside the house and ordered him to sit naked on the floor "like a dog," court records show. When his mother got home, she took him to a hospital, where he was treated for second- and third-degree burns and cuts to his back and knees.

One Hispanic lured another to his death using an elaborate ruse on Facebook

Israel Nieves set up a fake profile for a woman called Ty-Ann and flirted with Jason Rodriguez for weeks online before inviting him to "her" house. But as Rodriguez, a 19-year-old bodybuilder, waited outside in his car, Nieves walked up to the window and calmly shot him in the face and neck, detectives say. Rodriguez died a week later in hospital. Details of the case were revealed in records from the Orange County Court, Orlando, where Nieves, 19, faces a charge of first-degree murder with a firearm. Police say that Nieves, who had recently broken up with a girl Rodriguez was dating, set up a fake Facebook profile in the name of Ty-Ann and used it to build a relationship with his victim using emails and online chat. When Rodriguez pressed for a phone call and a face-to-face meeting, Nieves asked a female friend to play the role. She maintained the charade by engaging in a video chat with him, later telling police that she thought it was just a prank. She invited Rodriguez to an address in Orlando that she told him was hers, and he drove there in his green Honda Accord car, records show. But instead of a meeting with Ty-Ann, Rodriguez, a student at Valencia Community College, was confronted by Nieves. Nieves chased and fired at a witness who saw the shooting, police say, but they escaped unharmed. The witness gave detectives a detailed description of the shooter, who was wearing a bandana and a skullcap, a red long-sleeved sweatshirt, dark trousers and white shoes. Detectives who later obtained a search warrant retrieved a black ski mask, black bandana, black gloves and a .32-caliber pistol from a bedroom at Nieves's parents’ home. Police discovered the relationship with "Ty-Ann" through Rodriguez’s computer. Although Nieves went to great lengths to cover his tracks, even creating a fake phone number to swap texts with his victim, computer experts found evidence on his iPod Touch, email and iTunes accounts. Nieves denied his involvement when he was arrested, but later broke down under questioning and admitted that he was only trying to scare his rival and gain evidence to show his ex-girlfriend that Rodriguez was cheating on her. He claimed not to remember the night of the shooting, in February 2011, because he had been drinking and smoking embalming fluid. Nieves had a rocky and sometimes violent relationship with his ex-girlfriend. When they broke up, he emailed her a picture of himself clutching a gun. He is also alleged to have raped her and threatened her family. He is being held without bond at the Orange County Jail, and is also charged with the rape of a 14-year-old girl he met online.

One Hispanic murders another over sexual abuse

A 17-year-old Hispanic strangled a family friend with a dog chain before dousing his body with lighter fluid and setting it on fire, he confessed to police. Marco Tulio Flores told police in Boston that he murdered 27-year-old Jaime Galdamez as punishment because he had sexually abused him throughout his childhood - and he wanted to make sure it didn't happen to anyone else, police say. He walked into a police station and turned himself in the day after officers found Galdamez's charred remains in his illegal basement flat. Flores duct-taped Galdamez's face and wrists, police said, then used a dog chain to strangle him. He soaked the victim's body in charcoal lighter fluid then stole a flat-screen television and two computers, he told prosecutors. He returned several hours later, leaned in through a window he'd left open and set the 27-year-old's body on fire before fleeing, police said. Two families with six children lived in the rooms above Galdamez, and all were at home when the fire started. Flores has been arraigned on charges of first-degree murder and arson.

The Coalition of Muslim Organizations, Ghana, (COMOG) has chided Stephen O’Brien, British Minister for African Development for calling for respect for the rights of homosexuals in Ghana

In a statement, COMOG said that such support for homosexuals in Ghana was an unwelcome interference in the nation’s internal affairs and an attempt to corrupt and subvert Ghana’s religious, moral, cultural and national principles, values and norms. The statement expressed disappointment at O’Brien’s failure to consider the negative impact of homosexuality on the health, moral, procreation and human decency of Ghanaians, especially the youth. COMOG noted that Ghana’s status as a secular state did not make it atheistic, heathenish or pagan and that Ghanaians were generally a God-worshiping people who believed in the supremacy of God who is against hedonistic practices such as homosexuality and lesbianism. COMOG said that it wondered whether Ghanaians were being called upon to mortgage their national principles and cultural values for foreign and imported practices in the name of human rights and development partnership. COMOG repeated its call on Government to make its position clear on the issue for the avoidance of doubt and to allay the fear that it might act under pressure against the interest of Ghanaians. The statement called on Ghanaians to pray for God’s intervention to rid the nation of satanic practices such as homosexuality and lesbianism. It also called on the National House of Chiefs and traditional rulers to publicly denounce the practice of homosexuality and lesbianism.

City budget data shows that Jewish affiliated nonprofits have far outpaced their religious counterparts in bringing home taxpayer dough. Jewish groups secured $4.26 million from City Council members in the 2012 budget, far more than Catholic groups, which will take home $517,250, and Islamic/Muslim groups, which secured $19,000. The numbers reflect a million-dollar bump for Jewish groups, compared to the 2011 budget, and a dip of $50,000 for Catholic groups. The council distributes $50 million in so-called “member items” to nonprofit organizations citywide, and a recent report by Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer said that favoritism is endemic in the flawed system. Among groups with a religious affiliation, the biggest beneficiary in the funding free-for-all is the politically connected Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, which is taking home $1.4 million — more than Episcopal, Lutheran, Baptist, Presbyterian, and Pentecostal groups combined. The Met Council’s CEO, William Rapfogel, is a longtime friend of Assembly Speaker Shelly Silver, and his wife, Judy Rapfogel, is Silver’s chief of staff. In some cases, the cash supplements extant city services. The civilian patrol groups Shomrim and Shmira will take home $131,875. Chaverim, whose volunteers help those locked out of their cars or homes, are getting $35,000. The New York Board of Rabbis and a rabbinical seminary will get $51,000 while the Council of African Imams will only get $5,000. $122,500 will go to the powerful Bobov Hasidic sect, money that will go to help members struggling with medical bills and other services. Estimates vary, but according to 2008 data from the Association of Religious Data Archives, Catholics, at 62%, make up the bulk of the city’s population, followed by Jews at about 22%, Protestants at 10.7% and Muslims 3.5%.

A black man convicted of first-degree murder in the deaths of two of his sex partners through HIV transmission has been declared a dangerous offender

A Canadian court granted a request by prosecutors, who asked that Johnson Aziga be jailed indefinitely because they believe he is a high risk to re-offend. Johnson Aziga was diagnosed with HIV in 1996 and had unprotected sex with 11 women without telling them that he was HIV-positive. Aziga was the first person to be charged and convicted of first-degree murder in Canada for spreading HIV. Seven of these women later tested positive for HIV, and two later died of complications of AIDS. Aziga addressed the court for nearly an hour. He said that he has filed an application to renounce his Canadian Citizenship because he doesn't feel he faced a fair process. Aziga, 54, said that he planned to get HIV tattooed on the palms of his hands so women he meets know he is positive. He said that he didn't disclose his HIV status because of sociological and ethno-cultural barriers, religion and taboos. The Ugandan-born Aziga said that in sub-Saharan Africa, where he was raised, there was no education on sex, sex health or sexuality. Outside the courtroom, prosecutor Karen Shea said that the women who survived are experiencing side effects from being infected with HIV and the fact they didn't know about their infection in a timely fashion has directly affected the progress of the disease. During his 2009 trial, prosecutors described Aziga, a former employee of Ontario's Ministry of the Attorney General, as a callous and arrogant person who lied about his HIV status. Prosecutors said that Aziga failed to tell his partners of his HIV-positive status, even though he had been aware of it since 1996 and was under public-health orders to do so. Aziga has been in jail for eight years and is expected to appeal his murder conviction. The designation dangerous offender is reserved for Canada's most violent criminals and sexual predators. Crown attorneys can seek the designation during sentencing and must show that there is a high risk the criminal will commit violent or sexual offenses in the future.

Two Muslim teenagers have admitted drawing burkas on advertisements of scantily-clad women because they offended their religious views

In one incident, Mohammed Hasnath and Muhammed Tahir, both 18, used black paint to draw the traditional headdress over a model in a poster for Lynx deodorant. The vandals said that it was a sin in Islam for the woman to remain uncovered and they were just trying to do good. They also painted over faces in several other advertisements, including one for the Nicolas Cage film Drive Angry. Thames Magistrates’ Court in Bow, East London, was told that the pair were caught red-handed after members of the public called police. They had been seen painting over a female angel in the advertisement for Lynx at a bus shelter in February. Paint was also applied to the other side of the hoarding, which carried the poster for Drive Angry. The youths admitted six counts of criminal damage. Hasnath, of Poplar, and Tahir, of Tower Hamlets, were each told to pay costs of £283 and were released on a 12-month conditional discharge. The case came only days after Islamic extremists started a poster campaign proclaiming areas where Sharia law enforcement zones had been set up.

Up to 70% of British men and half of all Western European men are related to the Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamun, geneticists in Switzerland have said. Scientists at Zurich-based DNA genealogy center, iGENEA, reconstructed the DNA profile of the boy Pharaoh, who ascended the throne at the age of nine, his father Akhenaten and grandfather Amenhotep III, based on a film that was made for the Discovery Channel. The results showed that King Tut belonged to a genetic profile group, known as haplogroup R1b1a2, to which more than 50% of all men in Western Europe belong, indicating that they share a common ancestor. Among modern-day Egyptians this haplogroup contingent is below 1%, according to iGENEA. "It was very interesting to discover that he belonged to a genetic group in Europe -- there were many possible groups in Egypt that the DNA could have belonged to," said Roman Scholz, director of the iGENEA Centre. Around 70% of Spanish and 60% of French men also belong to the genetic group of the Pharaoh who ruled Egypt more than 3,000 years ago. "We think the common ancestor lived in the Caucasus about 9,500 years ago," Scholz said. It is estimated that the earliest migration of haplogroup R1b1a2 into Europe began with the spread of agriculture in 7,000 BC, according to iGENEA.
