The St. Louis Fed researchers said it’s not differences in age or education levels that explain the racial and ethnic wealth disparities; these persist even if you’re looking at older and better-educated blacks, Hispanics and whites. Part of the story here is the disproportionate effect the foreclosure crisis had on African Americans. Black families were in some cases stuck with riskier loans than whites, and when the crisis hit a lot of their wealth was wiped out. Since then, many blue cities with large minority populations have been hit particularly hard by financial problems. When Detroit, a majority African-American city long ruled by blue politicians, needed to raise money recently it foreclosed on tens of thousands of homes. Then there is the overall decline in clerical and some government jobs, which have long been a staple of African-American middle-class employment — a decline likely to continue, given the sorry finances of state and local governments across the nation.

The mortality rate for white women in the United States has increased 12% since 1999

White women in the United States have historically enjoyed low mortality rates. But in recent years, the death rate for adult white women 15 to 54 years old has increased even as the rates for black and Hispanic women have declined, according to a new analysis from the Urban Institute. The researchers focused on women's mortality rates because they're lower than men's and because death rates reflect the overall health of a population. If mortality is increasing, other measures of health are also getting worse. Black women have a much higher mortality rate, but it has declined significantly — 23% since 1999. Hispanic women also posted declines. (Hispanics of all age groups, both men and women, have lower mortality rates than average, a demographic phenomenon known as the Hispanic paradox.) Part of the jump in the death rate for whites is explained by the epidemic of prescription painkiller abuse and overdoses that disproportionately affected whites. But that accounts for only half the total increase, according to the report. Other causes of death on the rise include suicide and respiratory disease. Some declined, including traffic deaths, homicides, and the cancers most closely linked to smoking. Though overdose deaths among blacks also increased, the rise was smaller. And overall mortality for black women fell dramatically, with declines in deaths from cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, and cancers, among other causes. The pattern may reflect "a systematic reversal in the long-term trend of mortality decline" for white women, according to the Urban Institute paper. Such a shift could be linked to social and economic circumstances. Poorer people generally have poorer health for a variety of reasons, and growing inequality could be weighing on death rates. "It’s possible that as this group of women ages, there could be a reversal of a very long-term decline in the death rate," said Nan Marie Astone, a senior fellow at the Urban Institute and the lead author of the report. America isn't really used to the idea of declining life expectancy. The next few decades might change that.

Westminster City Council is still paying the rent on the family’s £600,000 flat even though the rules say that housing benefit should normally be stopped after 13 weeks. British MPs said that they were horrified that the child of a family given refugee status, citizenship and benefits had returned the favor by orchestrating the murder of two of its citizens. The owner of a house in Little Venice where they lived for four years said that Westminster City Council paid £450 a week in rent for the family – £23,400 a year. Two more of the five owners of homes they have lived in have confirmed that their rent was paid by the council or through a housing association. Assuming the same £23,400-a-year cost, then the bill over 20 years is £468,000. Emwazi’s father Jasem, 51, and his wife Ghaneya brought their family – including Mohammed, then aged six – to Britain in 1994. The couple successfully argued that because they are Bedoon – stateless people denied citizenship by Kuwait – they should be granted asylum. The award of British citizenship allowed the whole family to make regular trips back to Kuwait.

According to an arrest report, Miami Gardens Police Chief Stephen Johnson called a number in a "two-girl special" prostitution ad and negotiated a $100 deal for two women for 30 minutes. Only problem: The woman he allegedly paid at a motel was really a sheriff's detective. "The stress overwhelmed me, and I made a very bad decision," Johnson said. He was hired in May 2014 to repair community relations after former top cop Matthew Boyd resigned amid allegations of harassment and illegal tactics.

The top suspect in the brutal killing of a Bangladeshi-American blogger has been apprehended

Farabi Shafiur Rahman, who was arrested at a bus stop in Dhaka, Bangladesh, has confessed to threatening blogger Avijit Roy. "It's a holy duty of Bangalee Muslims to kill Avijit," he wrote on Facebook in 2014. Farabi was jailed in the past in connection with an Islamic extremist organization; Roy battled extremism in his writings. Farabi was also arrested in 2014 over social media comments backing another blogger's death, though he was released in that case. That blogger, Ahmed Rajib Haider, was similarly hacked to death.

What is a normal penis length?

For any man who's secretly wondering if he measures up, here's the answer: British researchers set out to determine what can be considered a "normal" penis length by analyzing prior studies and identifying 20 that met their criteria. That gave them a data pool of 15,521 males ages 17 to 91 with which to conduct the first "formal systematic [review] of penile size measurements." Using the men's measurements, they created nomograms, or graphical diagrams that plot the relationship between two variables (in this case, length and percentile), of flaccid and erect penile size measurements. Their conclusion: The average length of a flaccid penis is 3.6 inches, and the average length of an erect penis is 5.16 inches. They also determined average girth: 3.7 inches when flaccid, and 4.6 inches when erect. The average stretched flaccid length was 5.21 inches. Dr. David Veale explains that the nomograms should "help doctors reassure the large majority of men that the size of their penis is in the normal range," as it easily illustrates whether a man who isn't exactly average falls in the 40th percentile, for instance, or the 65th. As for those at the extremes, the pool is small: Just 2.28% of males' members would be considered "abnormally small"; roughly the same percentage have an abnormally large penis. What the researchers didn't find: any differences in penile size across different races or any correlation between the length of a man's foot and his penis.

Muslim sex criminals of Britain: Ten men have been charged as part of an investigation into child grooming and sexual exploitation in Rochdale against girls as young as 13

The men are accused of a catalog of serious sex offences, which include numerous charges of rape and sexual activity with a child, against seven victims between 2005 and 2013. All 10 have been arrested under Operation Doublet, which aims to tackle child sexual exploitation by older men in Rochdale. The operation was launched after the conviction of nine men in May 2014 for their roles in a child abuse ring which spanned Rochdale and parts of Greater Manchester. So far, 65 people have been arrested as part of Operation Doublet and the investigation continues. The charges are; Shayfur Rahman, 31, of Prestwich, one count of rape; Kutab Miah, 34, of Rochdale, three counts of sexual activity and one count of rape; Rehan Ali, 26, of Manchester, one count of rape, three counts of sexual activity with a child when the offender was over 18 and three counts of sexual activity with a child when the offender was between 15 and 17. Iklaq Choudhry Hussain, 37, of Rochdale, three counts of sexual activity with a child and two counts of rape; David Law, 45, of Ilkeston, Derbyshire, three counts of conspiracy to commit rape; Mahfus Rahman, 28, three counts of rape and three counts of sexual activity with a child. Ashfaq Yousaf, 28, has been charged with one count of aiding and abetting rape against one victim. He has also been charged with one count of rape against a further victim. Afraz Ahmed, 32, of Rochdale has been charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit rape and one count of rape against one victim. He also faces two counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, relating to offences against to girls. He has also been charged with one count of rape against a further victim. Mohammed Davood, 37, of Burnley has been charged with one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm against one victim. He has also been charged with three counts of rape, one count of sexual activity with a child and one count of sexual assault against a further victim. Mohammed Miah, 39, has been charged with three counts of sexual activity and one count of rape against one victim. He has also been charged with one count of rape against a further victim. The Crown Prosecution Service said that the majority of offences took place when the complainants were under 16.

DNA analysis has revealed evidence for a massive migration into the heartland of Europe 4,500 years ago

Data from the genomes of 69 ancient individuals suggest that herders moved en masse from the continent's eastern periphery into Central Europe. These migrants may be responsible for the expansion of Indo-European languages, which make up the majority of spoken tongues in Europe today. Prof David Reich and colleagues extracted DNA from remains found at archaeological sites around the continent. They used a new DNA-enrichment technique that greatly reduces the amount of sequencing needed to obtain genome-wide data. Their analyses show that 7,000-8,000 years ago, a closely related group of early farmers moved into Europe from the Near East, confirming the findings of previous studies. The farmers were distinct from the indigenous hunter-gatherers that they encountered as they spread around the continent. Eventually, the two groups mixed, so that by 5,000-6,000 years ago, the farmers' genetic signature had become melded with that of the indigenous Europeans. But previous studies show that a two-way amalgam of farmers and hunters is not sufficient to capture the genetic complexity of modern Europeans. A third ancestral group must have been added to the melting pot more recently. Prof Reich and colleagues have now identified a likely source area for this later diaspora. The Bronze Age Yamnaya pastoralists of southern Russia are a good fit for the missing third genetic component in Europeans. The team analysed nine genomes from individuals belonging to this nomadic group, which buried their dead in mounds known as kurgans. The scientists contend that a group similar to the Yamnaya moved into the European heartland after the invention of wheeled vehicles, contributing up to 50% of ancestry in some modern north Europeans. Southern Europeans on the whole appear to have been less affected by the expansion. Even more intriguing is the possible link between this steppe expansion and the origins of Indo-European languages. Most indigenous European tongues, from English to Russian and Spanish to Greek, belong to the Indo-European group. The classification is based on shared features of vocabulary and grammar. Basque, spoken in south-west France and northern Spain, does not fit in this group, and may be the only surviving relic of an earlier group of languages once spoken more widely. Two principal hypotheses have been put forward to explain the preponderance of Indo-European tongues in Europe today. According to the "Anatolian hypothesis", Indo-European languages were spread by the first farmers from the Near East 7,000-8,000 years ago. But the latest paper supports the "Steppe hypothesis", which proposes that early Indo-European speakers were Bronze Age farmers on the grasslands north of the Black and Caspian Seas. "An open question for us is whether the languages spoken by these steppe migrants were just ancestral to a sub-set of Indo-European languages in Europe today - for example, Balti-Slavic and maybe Germanic - or the great majority of Indo-European languages spoken in Europe today," Prof Reich said. But he added that Indo-European languages spoken in Iran and India had probably already diverged from those spoken by the Yamnaya before the nomads blazed a trail into Europe.

A white or Hispanic homicide victim is over twice as likely to be killed by a black than a black homicide victim is to be killed by a white or Hispanic

Approximately 16% of white or Hispanic victims in homicide incidents involving a single victim and single offender were killed by blacks, compared with only 7% of black victims who are killed by whites or Hispanics. Given the fact that blacks are less than 13% of the national population, their homicide rate against whites and Hispanics combined is vastly disproportionate to their share of the population. There were 431 black killers of whites and Hispanics, compared to 193 white or Hispanic killers of blacks. Blacks are also disproportionately represented among cop killers. In 2013, blacks made up 42% of all cop killers whose race was known. It is precisely in response to the disproportionate criminality among the black population that the police are deployed in much higher numbers in black neighborhoods, where they are trying to save innocent lives. The 200 or so reported killings of blacks by police officers — nearly all justified — pale in comparison to the 6,000 or so killings of blacks by other blacks.

Millions of African Americans moved from the South in the early 20th century to seek better job opportunities and higher wages, but a new study on the historic Great Migration shows that with improved economic conditions came a greater risk of mortality

A study found that, on average, African Americans who migrated died 1.5 years sooner than their peers who stayed in the South. UChicago scholars were part of a study that found if an African American man lived to age 65, his chances of reaching age 70 were 82.5%, if he remained in the South. But if he migrated, those chances shrank to 75%. For an African American woman who lived to age 65, the likelihood that she would live to 70 in the South were 90% but dropped to 85% if she migrated. Medical records indicate that migrants died at much higher rates from cirrhosis and pulmonary illnesses, which are closely linked to smoking and drinking. Black said that there were other factors as well: chemicals and pollution from factories, higher population density (and, therefore, more contagious diseases), the shock of cold weather, and the stress from uneven employment prospects. "Migrants were a self-selected group: Many of them had been preparing all their lives to make the move, and everything suggested they'd be healthier than their counterparts in the South," said Dan Black, deputy dean and professor at the University of Chicago's Harris School of Public Policy Studies, who co-authored the study. "But it was shocking to learn that, in terms of longevity, the migrants weren't better off at all." Joining Black as co-authors were Seth G. Sanders of Duke University, Evan Taylor of the University of Michigan, and Lowell Taylor of Carnegie Mellon University and NORC at the University of Chicago. The authors believe that the study is the first attempt to establish a link between the Great Migration and mortality. Researchers constructed and examined the records of one million migrants extracted from the Duke SSA/Medicare Dataset — records containing information about each migrant's race, sex, age and, crucially, place of birth and death. Since most migrants came from towns near railroad lines, researchers studied old railroad maps and located links between "sending communities" and "receiving communities." Then they devised a formula to compare the longevity of people who had stayed in the South or migrated, limiting their focus to people born between 1916 and 1932 in eight states in the Deep South. "Our assessment of the long-term consequences of the Great Migration suggests that dislocation due to migration might have substantial costs in terms of individual health," Black said. He hopes that his research may be relevant for evaluating current trends in developing countries, many of which are experiencing extraordinary levels of migration from rural areas to urban centers.

Attackers in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka have hacked to death a US-Bangladeshi blogger whose writings on religion angered Islamist hardliners

Avijit Roy, an atheist who advocated secularism, was attacked as he walked back from a book fair with his wife, who was also hurt in the attack. No-one has been arrested but police say that they are investigating a local Islamist group that praised the killing. Roy's family say that he received threats after publishing articles promoting secular views, science and social issues on his Bengali-language blog, Mukto-mona (Free Mind). He defended atheism in a recent Facebook post, calling it a "rational concept to oppose any unscientific and irrational belief". A group of men ambushed the couple, who live in the United States and were visiting Dhaka only to attend the book festival, as they walked toward a roadside tea stall. At least two of the attackers hit the couple with meat cleavers in the attack, police chief Sirajul Islam said. Dropping their weapons, the attackers ran away, disappearing into the crowds. Police said that they were investigating a local hard-line religious group that had praised the killing in an online message. Ajay Roy, father of the dead man, urged the authorities to find the killers and "ensure exemplary punishment". The killing in early 2013 of another secular blogger, Ahmed Rajib Haider, which was blamed on religious hardliners, sparked protests from free-speech supporters and counter-protests from Islamists. The police say that the attack on Roy was similar to the 2013 murder. Death threats against atheist writers and bloggers are nothing new in Bangladesh. Prominent writer Taslima Nasreen had to leave Bangladesh after she received death threats from hard-line Islamists in the mid-1990s. She wrote on her blog: "Avijit Roy has been killed the way other free thinker writers were killed in Bangladesh. No free thinker is safe in Bangladesh. Islamic terrorists can do whatever they like. They can kill people with no qualms whatsoever."

With anti-Jewish hate crimes by Muslims on the rise in Germany, the leader of the country’s Jewish community says that it may be wise for Jews to hide their identity in public

"Concealing yourself is not the answer… But, the question is whether, in areas with a large proportion of Muslims, in Berlin and elsewhere, it is sensible to be recognized as a Jew by wearing a kippa [traditional Jewish skullcap] or if it isn't better to wear some other form of head covering," Josef Schuster, president of the Central Council of Jews, told Berlin’s RBB radio. “I did not imagine this situation five years ago, and I am admittedly, shocked.” Anti-Zionist demonstrations following the IDF’s operation against Gaza during the summer of 2014 descended into anti-Jewish displays on at least several occasions, with Muslim-dominated crowds chanting “Gas the Jews!” and “Jew, cowardly pig, come on out and fight!" There are approximately 5 million Muslims in Germany, and there are more Muslims in Berlin, predominantly of Turkish origin, than Jews in the entire country. African witch doctors will pay as much as $75,000 for a complete set of albino body parts, according to a recent report from the Red Cross. Albinism is a hereditary genetic condition that causes an absence of pigmentation in the skin, hair and eyes and is often linked by researchers to inbreeding. It is particularly prevalent in Tanzania, affecting one person in 1,400, compared with one in 20,000 in the West.

Brustholm Ziamani, 19, fell under the spell of Islamic cleric Anjem Choudary and his followers in April 2014 and became obsessed with the killers of Fusilier Lee Rigby. Months after joining the Muslim preacher’s banned terror group al-Muhajiroun (ALM), he underwent a dramatic transformation that culminated in him wandering the streets looking for a serviceman to execute in a Woolwich-style killing. As Ziamani was found guilty of arming himself with a hammer and a 12-inch knife for the copycat attack, Britain’s most senior counter terrorism officer said that the case illustrated how quickly disaffected young "Britons" could be radicalized. Police and MI5 consider the plot to be one of the most serious to have threatened Britain since the escalation of the Syrian conflict. Known to his friends as Bruce, Ziamani was raised a devout Jehovah’s Witness by his Congolese parents.

More black schoolchildren were arrested during Fall 2014 than any other ethnicity in San Francisco’s public schools

Of the 37 students arrested from September to December 2014, 27 of them were black. Seven were Latino, three were white and one was Asian. Twenty of the arrests occurred at middle schools. Thirty-two of the students arrested were male. Blacks make up 8% of the school district’s students. Asian students, at 38%, make up the largest segment, followed Latinos at 26% and whites at 13%, according to statistics from the 2013-14 school year. This means that black students in San Francisco were 29 times as likely to be arrested as whites.

Thousands of people have taken to the streets of Turkey for days of protest about violence against women and ministers have called for the death penalty to be reinstated, following the brutal attempted rape and murder of a 20-year-old student

Ozgecan Aslan's burned body was found in woodland after she tried to resist a sexual assault by minibus driver Ahmet Suphi Altindoken who then stabbed and clubbed her to death. Three people have been arrested in connection with Miss Aslan's death and protests have continued throughout Turkey for three days. Her death has caused outrage in Turkey where women are frequently killed at the hands of violent men and are seen as having a lower status - a few recently inflamed by comments made by the Turkish president who said that women were not equal to men. Protesters took to the streets in their thousands bearing placards of Miss Aslan and Turkish women shared their stories of harassment and violence on Twitter using the hashtag #sendeanlat (you tell your story). The 20-year-old was the only passenger left in a minibus driven by Altindoken, who changed the route of the bus when the other passengers got off and attempted to rape her. When she resisted him and used pepper spray, he killed her. Altindoken then returned to Tarsus to find his father Necmettin Altindoken and friend Fatih Gokce to help him dispose of her body. All three are being held at different detention centers in Turkey. They burned the body in a wooded area in a bid to hide the evidence but the corpse was found by police. Altindoken has confessed to the murder, saying that he had stabbed Aslan and then struck the fatal blows with a crowbar after seeing that she was not yet dead. The murder has also caused outrage among ministers and the public and has been compared to the reaction after the gang rape and brutal assault of Jyoti Singh in Delhi in 2012, who later died of her injuries. Turkey is already battling shocking levels of violence against women. According to the Platform to Stop Violence Against Women activist group, 294 women were killed by men in 2014. The situation is not helped by the ruling Islamic-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP) and Erdogan, who declared in November 2014 that women were not equal to men.

An adviser on education policies to Japan’s government has sparked a furore by recommending that immigrants in the world’s third-largest economy be separated by race

In a column for the Sankei newspaper, Ayako Sono said apartheid-era South Africa showed that whites, Asians and blacks should live apart. “Black people fundamentally have a philosophy of large families,” she wrote. “For whites and Asians, it was common sense for a couple and two children to live in one complex. But blacks ended up having 20 to 30 family members living in a single unit.” Sono is a best-selling author and a vocal supporter of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s efforts to revive patriotic education. Abe appointed her to a panel on educational reform in 2013 but the government says that she has since quit. She has also been quoted in a government-recommended textbook on morals for secondary school students, alongside Mother Theresa and other prominent figures. The column, written on Japan’s National Foundation Day, traditionally a holiday for expressing patriotism, sparked outrage, with online commentators branding it “disgusting” and “appalling”. Japan’s government is considering allowing 200,000 foreigners a year to enter the country to head off a growing demographic crisis. The country’s population is aging and declining, falling by nearly a quarter of a million in 2013. An advisory body to Abe said in 2014 that opening the immigration drawbridge to more foreigners would eventually help stabilize the population – currently 127 million – “at around 100 million”. The Asian powerhouse has so far shunned the mass immigration policies of other developed economies. Less than 2% of the population is foreign, and that includes hundreds of thousands of long-term residents from China and Korea. In her column, Sono said that Japan’s chronic labor shortage was forcing the country to consider more immigrants, but added that after studying the situation in South Africa for 30-40 years such policies would only work if the country segregated races. “It is next to impossible to attain an understanding of foreigners by living alongside them,” she said. She said that black Africans had ruined areas previously reserved for whites in the country and they would do the same thing to Japan if allowed to do so.

One in 12 schoolchildren in England and Wales are now officially classed as Muslim after a decade which saw the number of followers of Islam surge by just over 1.1 million, according to the most detailed study of its kind ever published. The report, presented to Parliament, concludes that Muslims could play a decisive role in the coming general election, expected to be the closest in recent times, making up a significant share of voters in some of the most marginal seats in the country. But the study of official census data by the Muslim Council of Britain also concludes that the Muslim population will continue expanding for “many decades” to come – something that experts said could transform everything from social attitudes to foreign policy. Although immigration has driven growth in the past, it is the dramatically younger age profile of the Muslim population which could have the biggest impact in the future. At a time when the wider population is ageing rapidly, half of British Muslims are under the age of 25 and a third are under 15. Overall 2.7 million people living in England and Wales on census day in 2011 – and another 81,000 across Scotland and Northern Ireland – described themselves as Muslim. That is up from just under 1.6 million in 2001 – a 75% jump. Among children under the age of five the rate of increase was more than 80%. Significantly, Muslims make up more than a fifth of the population in 26 parliamentary constituencies and around 50% in some areas. There are also 70 council wards with a Muslim population of 40% or more. Muslims are around twice as likely to be unemployed or homeless and almost a third of members of some communities have little or no English – a trait most marked among older people and new arrivals. Prof David Voas, director of the Institute for Social and Economic Research based at Essex University, said: “In terms of ethnic-religious minority groups expanding I think this is probably unprecedented. Two new immigrants have arrived in the United States for every new job created nationwide, during the years stretching from 2000 and 2014, according to government statistics

About 18 million people moved to the United States from other countries between 2000 and 2014. But only 9.3 million new jobs were created during that same period. Varying estimates from the government's Bureau of Labor Statistics, the U.S. Census Bureau and the Pew Research Center indicate that of the 18 million immigrants who entered the United States between 2000 and 2014, between 4.5 million and 6.0 million did so illegally.

Black Americans make up a disproportionate share of the population newly infected with HIV, and they're more likely to die from the disease, according to two studies released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

The first study looked at 2013 data submitted by 61 health departments and 151 community-based organizations around the country. The analysis found that black Americans accounted for 54.9% of all newly identified HIV-positive people at CDC-funded testing events — even though they make up roughly 12% of the US population, and about 45% of those tested at the events. The second study found that the death rate per 1,000 Americans 13 and older living with HIV dropped from 28.4 among black Americans in 2008 to 20.5 in 2012. Although this was the largest decline among all racial and ethnic groups, black individuals with HIV were 13% more likely to die in 2012 than their white counterparts and 47% more likely than their Hispanic peers. Things are even worse for gay black men. Although gay and bisexual men make up just 2% of the U.S. population, they are nearly 66% of the nation’s new HIV infections each year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported that new HIV infections are stable or declining in all other groups, but increasing among gay and bisexual men in the United States. Between 2008 and 2010, there was a 12% increase in new HIV infections among gay men nationally, and gay youth (ages 13–24) are especially vulnerable. In the same time period, the CDC reported an astounding 22% increase in new HIV infections among gay youth. What’s more, young black gay men continue to bear the brunt of new HIV infections. The heavy impact of HIV on black Americans is primarily borne by black gay men. Black gay men are three times more likely to acquire HIV than white gay men, and 22 times more likely to acquire HIV compared with the general black American population. Although black gay men represent just 1.4% of the black community, they represent 53% of new HIV infections among black Americans each year. Even more disturbing is that a quarter of new HIV infections among all Americans each year occur among black gay men. In fact, if you monitored a group of young black gay men from ages 20 to 40, 25% would be HIV-positive by age 25 and nearly 60% would be HIV-positive by age 40. This mirrors rates of HIV infection in some of the hardest-hit regions of the world.

The All-Party Parliamentary Inquiry into anti-Semitism wants prosecutors to examine whether prevention orders like those used to restrict sex offenders' Internet access could be used. The cross-party group also highlighted the use of anti-Semitic terms online. A Community Security Trust report said that British anti-Semitic incidents more than doubled to 1,168 in 2014. The trust - which monitors anti-Semitism in Britain - says that this was its highest figure recorded since it began work in 1984. The Parliamentary inquiry was set up following a rise in incidents in July and August of 2014 during fighting between Gaza and Israel. Although the primary focus of the inquiry was anti-Semitism, one recommendation that it made was that those who carry out any kind of hate crime should be prevented from using social media. Hate crimes are defined in England and Wales as offenses carried against someone because of their disability, gender identity, race, religion or belief or sexual orientation and can include harassment. The MPs said that social media platforms had "increasingly been used for the spread of anti-Semitism". Of course, the Jews will always use the term "anti-Semitism" to include all criticism of their anti-gentile activities. Like the Muslims, Jews are ultimately the enemies of free speech and freedom of thought.

Black guy lists his occupation as "drug dealer" on arrest report

Robert Michael Phillips has seven felony convictions and more than a dozen arrests on his resumé — which he apparently feels earns him the right to list his occupation as "drug dealer". The slight problem being that he did so not on an application to peddle illegal substances, but rather on his arrest report, albeit for a host of alleged drug-related offenses. Something else he can add to his resumé — a veritable symphony of charges that include resisting arrest, heroin trafficking, possession of cocaine with intent to sell, weapons possession by a career criminal, fleeing law enforcement at a high rate of speed, striking a police animal, battery, and driving with a suspended license. What police say happened: Phillips cut off an unmarked officer, nearly causing an accident. The cop ran a check on Phillips, discovered that he was driving a stolen car, and followed; he observed Phillips conduct a drug deal. When police approached, he sped off, eventually entering a Michaels store, where he knocked a woman down, dropped a loaded weapon, and ran out the back. Police used a police dog to apprehend Phillips, and found 22 grams of heroin, about $2,300 in cash, 5.3 grams of crack, a drug scale, and hypodermic needles on his person and in his car.

Pennsylvania: A black teenager has been charged with murder after he shot a white classmate then posed for a selfie with the victim's body and sent the image to a friend

Maxwell Morton, 16, has been charged with first-degree murder in the case of 16-year-old Ryan Mangan, who died of a single gunshot wound to the face, and was discovered by his mother in her home. A picture was sent to one of Morton's friends on Snapchat showing him posing in front of Mangan's body which was slumped over in a chair, said police. Morton has also been charged one count of possession of a firearm by a minor. Following a search at Morton's home, he confessed to shooting Mangan after police found a 9mm handgun hidden under the basement steps that matched the shell casing found at the scene of the murder. Morton is being held in a juvenile detention center without bail and is set to face a preliminary hearing on February 19, 2015. If you love your children, keep them away from blacks even if people call you racist.

California: Police have charged a Latino teenager with a hate crime for the stabbing of two black men in a Covina shopping center parking lot

Police Sgt. Gregg Peterson said that 19-year-old Louis Vasquez was arrested on charges of suspicion of attempted murder, use of a deadly weapon and a hate crime for the attack on two black men. Peterson says that Vasquez slashed a 27-year-old black man walking through the parking lot, cutting his right shoulder and left knee. Peterson says that the Hispanic suspect then stabbed an 18-year-old black store employee in the back as he retrieved shopping carts. Police say that the black victims did not know each other and it was a racially motivated attack.

In December 2007, the number of foreign-born workers was 22,810,000; by January 2009, the number had increased to 24,553,000. Meanwhile, the number of American-born workers employed decreased by 1.5 million, from 123,524,000 to 121,999,000. The numbers come as Congress continues to debate a Department of Homeland Security appropriations bill that would defund Obama’s executive amnesty, which has opened the door for millions of illegal immigrants to legally work in the United States.

Diversity and child sex abuse in Britain: Dozens of South Asian men have been charged with a wide range of sex crimes against vulnerable girls after two separate police investigations

Following a milestone operation by Northumbria Police, 20 suspects appeared in court to face charges including rape, sexual assault and sex trafficking. The offenses involved 12 victims, including one girl who was aged just 13, with officers vowing to continue their investigation into the abuse of vulnerable children. In a separate case, 25 men from Halifax, West Yorkshire, were charged with a number of historic and child-related sex offences. Almost all of the men in both cases are from South Asian backgrounds. A total of 31 suspects have already been charged as part of the operation. The victims associated with the latest charges are aged between 13 and 25. The accused men appeared at Bedlington magistrates’ court to be charged with a long list of offenses including arranging child prostitution, false imprisonment and supplying Class A drugs.

Rabbi Lyle Kamlet, a former Mamaroneck, New York, religious-school teacher, has been arrested for buying mail-order child pornography which he had delivered to the school and then took home

Kamlet, 62, of Mount Vernon is charged in a federal complaint with single counts of receiving child pornography and possessing child pornography. His arrest came after an investigation by the U.S. Attorney's Office and U.S Postal Service inspectors. Kamlet formerly worked at the Westchester Day School, a Jewish day school in Mamaroneck. From 2008 through 2010, Kamlet ordered a number of kiddie porn DVDs, some of which he had sent to the school where he had been employed. Investigators searched Kamlet's home in 2013 and seized a number of videos, along with home movies allegedly containing images of naked children. According to the complaint, authorities began looking at Kamlet's activities after law enforcement officials in Canada searched a movie production company there, seizing hundreds of movies, including some child pornography. Also seized was an electronic database of mail-order customers and information on what they ordered. The database showed that Kamlet apparently ordered 23 DVDs from the company between November 2008 and July 2010, with titles such as Boy Fights XXVI: Buddy Brawl, Skate Brats and Cutting Room Floor. The complaint says that the videos depict naked boys between ages 10 and 14 performing gymnastics, riding bicycles, wrestling, having pillow fights and engaging in other activities. Kamlet admitted to investigators that he bought the videos, the complaint says, describing them "as his own personal sexual preference." Home movies seized from his home, which authorities say Kamlet made, show boys in a locker room, changing out of swim trunks. Kamlet was released on $100,000 bond after appearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Lisa Margaret Smith in federal court in White Plains. He's scheduled to return to court February 25, 2015. If convicted, he faces between five and 20 years in prison on each count as well as fines of up to $250,000 for each charge.

Liban Haji Mohammed, a 29-year-old Somali-born U.S. citizen, drove cabs in Washington DC for three years before being suspected by the FBI of having links with Al-Shabaab, a terrorist group linked with the deadly Westgate Mall attack in Kenya in 2013 – where the attack lasted four days with dozens killed; among several other terrorist attacks across Africa. Mohammed is accused by the FBI of providing material support to Al-Shabaab, and left the United States in the summer of 2012 to join the terrorist group in Somalia. “Not only did he choose to go to Somalia and fight with Al Shabaab, he took a prominent role in trying to recruit people to fight for Al Shabaab,” said Carl Ghatas, special agent in charge of the counter-terrorism division at the FBI’s Washington field office.

Britons dislike Israel more than Iran, new research suggests, following a surge in negative attitudes towards the country over the past two years, but North Korea is the most maligned nation outside of Europe

In a survey conducted by think tank Chatham House on public attitudes towards other countries, 35% of Britons said that they felt especially unfavorable towards Israel, an increase of 18% since 2012, while people’s unfavorable feelings towards Iran dropped from 45% to 33%. North Korea beat them both however, with 47% of Britons feeling especially unfavorable towards the nation led by Kim Jong-un. The research, entitled "Internationalism or Isolationism? British attitudes towards the UK’s international priorities" classed the top five least favorable nations as North Korea, Israel, Iran, Pakistan and Nigeria. It was conducted during August 2014, which the researchers noted was at a time when Israel was engaged in a military operation in Gaza against Hamas that caused large numbers of civilian casualties. The researchers suggested that the prominence of this news at the time contributed to the increase in unfavorable feelings towards Israel. For nations classed within Europe however, Russia was the most disliked at 56%, followed by Ukraine at a significantly lower 23%. The results come at a time when there has been an increase in overt negativity towards Israel and the country’s president Benjamin Netanyahu. CNN’s international correspondent quit his long-standing job on the network after he appeared to suggest that Israeli propaganda had played a hand in the brutal Charlie Hebdo terror attacks, while in the Philippines anti-Charlie Hebdo protesters held up burned images of Netanyahu and the Israeli flag with the message “Zionist conspiracy”.

You are what you eat, especially when it comes to how your body builds protein

It is well known that consuming protein stimulates the body's cells to build protein. However, getting older combined with eating less protein can lead to a decline in the body's muscle-building efficiency. Maintaining and building muscle is especially important for older individuals. Increased muscle mass can contribute to a healthier weight, better fitness and an improved quality of life. New research explores whether the amount and timing of protein consumption make a difference in the body's net protein gains. Current US recommendations for daily dietary protein intake are 0.8 grams/kilogram of body weight (roughly 62 grams of protein per day for a 170-pound person). Previous research has shown that older adults need a protein intake of at least 0.40 g/kg of body weight at each meal (roughly 31 grams of protein per meal or 93 grams per day for a 170-pound person) to encourage maximum protein synthesis. This represents a significantly higher amount of protein than the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) suggests. Researchers at the Center for Translational Research in Aging and Longevity at the Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences set out to measure whether daily protein intake greater than the average American adult consumption leads to a greater net protein gain in older adults. They also examined whether the timing of protein intake made a difference in protein synthesis - the process by which cells make protein - and net protein gains. The research team studied 20 healthy adults between 52-75 years of age, randomly assigning them to one of four groups over a four-day test period. Two groups ate the RDA of 0.8 g/kg per day of protein: one group had even protein distribution across meals (33% of total protein at breakfast, lunch and dinner) and the other had an uneven protein distribution at meals (15% at breakfast, 20% at lunch and 65% at dinner). The other two groups ate double the RDA (1.5 g/kg day of protein) following the same even and uneven protein distribution patterns as the first two groups. The group that consumed double the RDA was supplemented with a pre-weighed milk protein concentrate (equal parts whey and casein) to ensure that they achieved daily protein goals of 1.5 g/kg day. All meals were prepared in the Metabolic Kitchen at University of Arkansas Translational Research Institute. The subjects recorded time and other details about the food they ate. The research team found that while the distribution of protein across meals did not make a significant impact, total amount of protein consumed did. "Although there was no clear effect of the pattern of protein intake in our study, we observed a definitive effect of a higher amount of protein intake in mixed meals on whole body net protein balance and muscle protein synthesis," the authors wrote. "Whole body net protein balance was greater with protein intake above recommended dietary allowance." Research also shows that added sugars, particularly those containing fructose, are a principal driver of diabetes and pre-diabetes, even more so than other carbohydrates.

Instead, the United States ranked only 12th - after Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland, Canada, Chile, Estonia, Ireland, Mauritius, and Denmark. The Index rates economic freedom for countries on 10 quantitative and qualitative factors that are based on four pillars of freedom: rule of law, limited government, regulatory efficiency and open markets. When Obama took office in 2009, the United States ranked sixth for economic freedom. Now in 2015, the United States has fallen by six to 12th place. “The anemic post-recession recovery has been characterized by slow growth, high unemployment, a decrease in the number of Americans seeking work, and great uncertainty that has held back investment,” explains the report. “Increased tax regulatory burdens, aggravated by favoritism toward entrenched interests, have undercut America’s historically dynamic entrepreneurial growth.”

Only about 7.5% of the human genetic instruction book shaped the evolution of human traits, a new study suggests

And it’s often not genes, but the how-to instructions for using those genes that are most important. Those findings emerged from a new method of analyzing how natural selection has tinkered with the genome since humans split from chimpanzees. “Remarkably we use nearly the same building blocks as chimpanzees, but we end up with very different results,” says Brad Gulko, a computer scientist at Cornell University. Previously, researchers have mostly looked for evolutionary clues in protein-producing genes because proteins do much of the important work in cells and organisms. Altering a protein may change the way an organism looks or acts. But mutations that alter proteins often are devastating to an organism and therefore aren’t passed on to offspring. Gulko and colleagues found that only 9% of the DNA that got evolution’s attention resides in protein-coding parts of the genome that are shared with other species. About 52% of the places showing signs of natural selection were in intergenic regions, the stretches of DNA between genes. Another 35% were in introns — spacer DNA found within genes but not involved in encoding proteins. Both intergenic regions and introns often contain DNA responsible for controlling gene activity. These findings suggest that human evolution works mostly through changes in how genes are used, rather than by altering genes and the proteins they encode.

Though crime in the Middle East does tend to be lower than that of Latin America. Black Africans, of course, tend to have the highest crime rates.

For every black murder victim in 2011 there were 19 blacks killed by abortion, according to data from the FBI and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)

The CDC’s Abortion Surveillance Report for 2011 shows that 117,293 black babies were aborted that year in the 32 states and the District of Columbia that report abortion numbers to the CDC. The FBI’s Uniform Crime Report for 2011, shows that 6,329 blacks were murder victims that year (5,416 males, 910 females, and 3 unknown gender). In other words, for every black American killed by homicide in 2011, there were 19 (18.5) blacks killed by abortion - and that’s just in the jurisdictions that report their abortion data.

There is a plague of homicide among black Americans

The murder rate among African-Americans has receded in recent years: In 2010, it was 32 per 100,000 people — half the rate of 1990, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But it remains much higher than for other groups. The homicide mortality rate in 2010 for black men between 25 and 34 was about 15 times the rate for white men of the same age. This racial disparity isn’t new. Historians such as Eric H. Monkkonen of the University of California, Los Angeles, have traced disproportionate black murder rates to the late 19th century, with the gap widening in the 20th. Annual reports by the Los Angeles police from the early 1940s show that even when blacks were just 5% of the city’s population, they accounted for 21% of its homicide victims. There is no mystery in the fact that black people are most likely to be killed by other black people: Homicide tends to occur mostly within groups, no matter the race.

West Hollywood hate crime: A gay African American man was confronted by three Hispanic men in a SUV who yelled racial and homophobic slurs at him, according to a statement from the L.A. Sheriff's Department

One of the Latino suspects got out of the vehicle and punched the black victim in the face, causing him to fall backward and lose consciousness, deputies said. He was treated at a hospital. The trio fled, and now authorities want to talk to these Hispanic men about what could be a double hate crime and an assault.

A new study shows that a majority of Germans have had enough of the Holocaust and want to move on from "the greatest genocide in history"

About 81% of Germans say that they want to put "the history of the persecution of the Jews behind them" and for their leaders to turn to contemporary problems. The study entitled "Connecting past, separating present" was conducted by the Bertelsmann Foundation to gauge current German-Israeli relations. It also showed that almost half of modern day Germans - 48% - have a bad opinion about Israel, 36% a good one. Pollsters said that the ongoing Arab-Israeli conflict greatly determines German perceptions of Israel. In Germany, 68% want their lawmakers to stop weapons exports to Tel Aviv. In 2014, a submarine costing half a billion pounds was delivered to the Israeli navy.

Twin 9-year-old boys were left mostly alone in their New Hampshire apartment for four months after their African parents took three siblings to Nigeria and left an uncle to care for them

Manchester police say that the uncle, 25-year-old Giobari Atura, told them that he would stop by every couple of days to drop off food, but when police got involved in November 2014, they found no edible food in the refrigerator and only ramen noodles in a cabinet. Atura was charged in December 2014 with one count of endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor. He was freed on $500 bail. Atura's older brother, Jerusalem Monday, left for Nigeria with his wife and three of their children in July 2014, intending to return in August 2014. They told police that they were delayed by illness and passport problems. The case came to light when officials at the boys' school told the state Division of Children, Youth, and Families that the twins had been living on their own. The boys were taken into protective custody and then placed into foster care, though they're now back with their parents. A Hillsborough County attorney said that the parents returned home shortly after they learned the boys were being left alone. Because they left them in the care of a relative, he said, they won't be charged. In a police affidavit, Atura said that he told the boys to call him if they needed anything. "It should be noted that no operable phone was located within the apartment," the affidavit says. The twins' parents said that they had instructed Atura to stay at the apartment, and if he couldn't, they gave him the name of a family friend to contact. The parents said that they stayed in phone contact with Atura, who assured them everything was fine.

That is more than four times as high as any other country. Crucially, post-1965 immigration has been concentrated among less-skilled, less-educated workers. From 1980 to 1995, immigration increased the number of college graduates in the American work force by 4% while increasing the number of workers without high-school diplomas by 21%.

New York State’s most powerful Jewish powerbroker has fallen

Sheldon Silver, among the two or three most powerful men in state politics since 1994, surrendered to FBI agents at a federal building in Foley Square, just blocks from the Lower East Side district he dominated for decades. A New York State Assembly member from the Lower East Side since 1977, Silver has been the speaker of the assembly since 1994. Silver’s fall, on what are expected to be corruption charges related to undisclosed payments from a law firm, comes as the Lower East Side old boys network he ruled continues to self-immolate. Silver was a member of a tight-knit coterie of Jewish political operators who came up together in the co-op developments on Grand Street. Many had working class roots, belonged to the Bialystoker Synagogue on Willett Street, and developed power together through the same few Jewish institutions. Now, that Lower East Side crew is falling to pieces. William Rapfogel, Silver’s close ally, is in state prison after pleading guilty to embezzling millions as an executive director of the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty. Silver was a key benefactor of the Met Council, and William Rapfogel’s wife Judy is Silver’s chief of staff. Heshy Jacob, the traditional third member of Rapfogel and Silver’s Lower East Side power troika, was traveling in Israel and said that he was unaware of Silver’s arrest when reached via telephone. Speaking about the roles he, Rapfogel and Silver played on the Lower East Side, Jacob was forthright about the old guard’s power: ““We put in time and effort for the people,” Jacob said at the time. “It’s not that we simply are despots.” That power is now evaporating, as is the influence it wielded in Albany. The U.S. Attorney’s charges against Silver will relate to payments from a law firm called Goldberg & Iryami that specializes in tax certioari. Jay Arthur Goldberg, who leads the firm, grew up on the Lower East Side with Silver. His firm represents the Grand Street co-op buildings where Silver and Rapfogel lived. Some of those buildings are managed by Jacob.

Illegal immigration disproportionately impacts the wages and employment opportunities of African-American men

Foreign-born Hispanics who are in the United States illegally are disproportionately male. African-Americans who have not pursued education beyond high school are also disproportionately male. These poor educational attainment levels usually relegate both African-American men and illegal immigrant men to the same low-skilled labor market, where they must compete against each other for work. Not only do illegal immigrants compete for jobs with African-Americans, but that competition drives down wages for the jobs that are available. Immigration, both legal and illegal, has resulted in a disproportionately large increase in the number of high school dropouts in the labor pool. This has caused a drop in wages among the poorest and least-educated members of the workforce. These people are disproportionately likely to be African-American men. The consequences of illegal immigration for black men and the black community in general are not limited to wages. Lower wages and fewer jobs also correlate with an increase in the black incarceration rate.

ABC, NBC and Fox now have a higher percentage of blacks in prime time than there is in the general population

At Fox: 21% of characters in lead or supporting roles were black this past fall, a number that notched up again with January 2015's premiere of "Empire," a drama about an African-American family's music dynasty. New advances in the technology mean that detectives will know if an offender is black or white, the color of their hair and eyes, their height and age – even if there are no witnesses to the crime. Until now, investigators have only been able to match genetic material to records of criminals already in the national database, but the innovation will produce a "DNA photofit" describing the offender. Dr Denise Syndercombe-Court, a forensic genetics expert at King's College London, said: "The new technologies raise the possibility that we won't need an actual eyewitness to a crime in order to produce a picture of how the suspect looks. Instead, investigators will be able to generate a DNA photo detailing a suspect's characteristics, biological age and geographical ancestry." She said that the value to police is enormous in narrowing down the pool of suspects and eliminating the innocent. "We are now in the moment of glimpsing a brilliant new future of DNA analysis," she added. The breakthrough comes thanks to the Human Genome Project, which identified all the genes in human DNA, meaning that scientists can single out the sequences that determine individual characteristics. Academics and private companies are now developing tests that focus on individual areas such as eye color. In the past year, King's College London, working with the Metropolitan Police, has helped on a handful of criminal cases to identify the geographical background of suspects based on DNA samples. They are currently achieving success rates of more than 85%.

A new study by researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts reveals that Asian and Hispanic patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have lower mortality rates compared to black, white, or Native Americans with the disease

Findings indicate that the risk for death among white patients is much lower than in black and Native American SLE patients. Patients with lupus have an overactive immune system that attacks their healthy joints and organs. Previous studies report that lupus is disproportionately higher among non-white populations in the United States. In fact, evidence shows incidence of lupus is as much as four times higher in black compared to white females. Blacks, Hispanics and Asians with lupus have higher rates of lupus nephritis, end-stage renal disease and organ damage according to prior research. The racial/ethnic breakdown of patients with lupus or lupus nephritis in the current study was 40% black, 38% white, 15% Hispanic, 5% Asian, and 2% Native American. The annual mortality rate for those with lupus per 1,000 person-years was highest in Native Americans (27.52), blacks (24.13), and whites (20.17). Hispanic and Asian lupus patients had lower mortality than black, white, or Native American patients even after adjusting for demographic and clinical factors.

Authorities in Saudi Arabia have publicly beheaded a woman in Islam’s "holy" city of Mecca, prompting further criticism of the country’s human rights record

Laila Bint Abdul Muttalib Basim, a Burmese woman who resided in Saudi Arabia, was executed by sword after being dragged through the street and held down by four police officers. She was convicted of the sexual abuse and murder of her seven-year-old step-daughter. A video showed how it took three blows to complete the execution, while the woman screamed “I did not kill. I did not kill.” It has now been removed by YouTube as part of its policy on “shocking and disgusting content”. There are two ways to behead people according to Mohammed al-Saeedi, a human rights activist: “One way is to inject the prisoner with painkillers to numb the pain and the other is without the painkiller,” he said. “This woman was beheaded without painkillers – they wanted to make the pain more powerful for her.” The Saudi Ministry of the Interior said in a statement that it believed the sentence was warranted due to the severity of the crime. The beheading is part of an alarming trend, which has seen the kingdom execute seven people in the first two weeks of 2015. In 2014 the number of executions rose to 87, from 78 in 2013. Raif Badawi, the Saudi blogger, was due to receive the second set of 50 lashes today for insulting Islam, but it has been postponed on medical grounds. Ali A Rizvi, one of the blogger's best best friends said: "His wife told me that the lashings have been postponed, but it is only temporary." He was sentenced to 1,000 lashes and 10 years in prison after creating a liberal, secular website, Free Saudi Liberals. He faces lashings every Friday for the next 18 weeks, until the sentence is completed. He narrowly avoided the death penalty when a court threw out apostasy charges in 2013. Sarah Leah Wilson, the Middle East and North Africa director at Human Rights Watch, said: “Corporal punishment is nothing new in Saudi Arabia, but publicly lashing a peaceful activist merely for expressing his ideas sends an ugly message of intolerance. Saudi Arabia is showing a willingness to inflict vicious and cruel punishments on writers whose views it rejects.” Amnesty also condemned the sentence and has launched a campaign to release the blogger. In Saudi Arabia a number of crimes, including murder, rape, adultery and armed robbery, can carry a capital sentence. Beheading is considered one of the more humane punishments the authorities can mete out, a firing squad and stoning are other methods open to judges.

Up to 8% of people from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other South Asian countries carry a mutated gene that causes heart failure and potentially fatal heart attacks

A new study demonstrates how this gene mutation impairs the heart's ability to pump blood. Results could point the way to eventual treatments and prevention strategies for an estimated 55 million people of South Asian descent worldwide, including 200,000 people in the United States, who carry the potentially fatal mutation. The study was led by Sakthivel Sadayappan, PhD, MBA, of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. The mutation causes hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the most common form of inherited cardiac disease and the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young people. Previous studies by Dr. Sadayappan and other researchers have found that between 5% and 8% of South Asians carry the mutation. Carriers have about an 80% chance of developing heart failure after age 45. Dr. Sadayappan first reported the mutation in 2001 at the World Congress of the International Society for Heart Research, and has been studying it ever since. He said that, based on a report from one of his collaborators, the mutation likely arose in a single person roughly 33,000 to 55,000 years ago. The mutation then spread throughout South Asia. The mutated gene encodes for a protein, called cardiac myosin binding protein-C (cMyBP-C), that controls cardiac muscle contractions and is critical for the normal functioning of the heart. In the mutated gene, 25 base pairs (DNA letters) are missing. As a result, the tail end of the protein is altered. In his new study, Dr. Sadayappan and colleagues introduced the mutated gene into adult rat cardiomyocytes (heart muscle cells) in a petri dish. These cells were compared with cardiomyocytes that received a normal gene. In cells with the mutant gene, the cMyBP-C protein was not incorporated into sarcomeres, the basic units of heart muscle. So rather than helping the sarcomeres contract properly, the mutant protein floated around the cell's cytoplasm, producing a toxic effect. The study showed, for the first time, that expression of the mutant protein is sufficient to cause cardiac dysfunction.

Saudi Arabia is preparing to deliver another 50 lashes to a man who has been imprisoned for creating a blog that is critical of Islam

Raif Badawi got his first 50 lashes recently, and he will continue to get 50 each Friday until he reaches a grand total of 1,000 — unless Saudi Arabia backs down amid a growing international outcry. The flogging is in addition to his 10-year prison sentence and a fine equivalent to about $250,000. All that for creating a now-defunct blog called Free Saudi Liberals to debate political and social issues. “Raif told me he is in a lot of pain after his flogging — his health is poor and I’m certain he will not be able to cope with another round of lashes,” his wife tells Amnesty International. The human rights group is trying raise pressure on the Saudi government, which recently was on the other side of the free-speech debate when it condemned the murder of the Charlie Hebdo editors, also accused of insulting Islam. In fact, at a Paris rally, one woman borrowed the sentiment of "I am Charlie" and held a sign reading, "I am Raif Badawi."

Black comedian Dieudonne M'bala M'bala has been arrested for "defending terrorism" after a Facebook post in which he appeared to be sympathizing with the Muslim man who killed four people in a kosher supermarket and a policewoman in Paris

Dieudonne (known in France by his first name) has been taken into police custody in the wake of the now-deleted post he wrote after attending the recent unity and free-speech rally in Paris. It read, "Tonight, as far as I’m concerned, I feel like Charlie Coulibaly," making reference to both Islamic killer Amedy Coulibaly and the "Je Suis Charlie" ("I Am Charlie") phrase of support for Charlie Hebdo that's been circulating worldwide. Dieudonne is no stranger to French authorities. He's been called anti-Semitic for popularizing a Nazi-like salute, joking about the Holocaust, and poking fun of Jewish leaders in France. But his arrest brings up an inevitable debate: how a country that's taken to the streets to advocate for free speech may be trying to keep a lid on his. France doesn't enjoy the same free-speech liberties that the United States does — denying the Holocaust is illegal, for example, and more than 50 hate-speech investigations have opened since the attacks — but Dieudonne's lawyer says that this arrest was "totally exaggerated and [disproportionate]." The black comic himself said: "Whenever I express myself some people will not even try to understand me, they will not listen. ... I am looked upon as if I were Amedy Coulibaly, when I am no different from Charlie."

"God has given people space to make whatever they want which does not have a soul, including trees, ships, fruits, buildings, and so on," the cleric said.

Some of the differences in breast cancer outcomes between white and black women in the United States can be attributed to biology, suggests a new study

Compared to black women, non-Hispanic white women were more likely to be diagnosed when their breast cancer was at an early stage, the research showed. And black women had a higher risk of dying from their breast cancer, compared to white women. The study team thinks that these disparities are due to "a combination of biology and other factors that warrant further investigation to improve survival of all women,” said Dr. Ophira Ginsburg, one of the study’s authors from the Women’s College Hospital in Toronto. The researchers found that women diagnosed with early invasive breast cancer – known as stage I - have generally good outlooks, but there are racial differences in a number of factors that affect how well they do. For the new study, the researchers used a U.S. database to analyze nearly 450,000 invasive breast cancers diagnosed between 2004 and 2011. Overall, about 51% of white non-Hispanic women in the sample were diagnosed with early-stage cancers, which are thought to have the best prognosis if properly treated. Only about 37% of black women were diagnosed with early cancer, making them less likely to have that good prognosis. The researchers also found that about 6% of black women were predicted to die within seven years after their breast cancer diagnosis, compared to about 3% of white women. Black women were also more likely to die from small tumors, compared to white women. Differences still remained after the researchers excluded women with a more aggressive form of breast cancer known as triple-negative, which is known to be more common among black women. After accounting for various factors that are known to affect breast cancer outcomes - including income - the differences in outcomes persisted, which suggests to the researchers that other biological reasons - such as the aggressiveness of the tumors, for example - were behind the disparities. They don’t believe that a lack of screening among black women leads to a later diagnosis of cancer, because the relationship is even seen in age groups that don’t normally receive mammograms. “We do know that breast cancers in African American women do tend to be more aggressive than breast cancer in white women,” said Dr. Nancy Keating, a cancer researcher at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston who was not involved with the new study. “This - as well as other studies - supports this.”

Case Comprehensive Cancer Center researchers have identified new gene mutations unique to colon cancers in African Americans - the population with the highest incidence and death rates of any group for this disease

This discovery - namely, that colorectal cancers appear different on a molecular level in African Americans - offers new hope for these patients. With this groundbreaking knowledge, scientists now will seek to develop treatments that target the distinct nature of the disease in African Americans - and, they hope, begin to reduce the devastation disproportionately wrought on this population. The findings only became possible because of technological advances in gene sequencing and computational analysis. The study that revealed this invaluable information ultimately involved review of 1.5 billion bits of data. "This milestone study builds on our previous genetic research on colorectal cancer," said Sanford Markowitz, MD, PhD, corresponding author on the study, and principal investigator of the $11.3 million federal gastrointestinal cancers research program (GI SPORE) that includes this project. The disparity between colorectal cancer rates in African Americans and other groups has long existed; the most recent federal statistics, for example, put age-adjusted incidence at 46.8 cases for every 100,000 African Americans, and 38.1 cases for every 100,000 white Americans. Yet scientists have struggled to determine what factors - biological, economic, environmental, or others - account for this disparity. "These advancements underscore the importance of university-based research," said Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge, former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and representative of the 11th district, which includes Case Western Reserve and UH Case Medical Center. "I am proud that researchers from Northeast Ohio are taking meaningful steps toward identifying pathways to block a devastating disease that disproportionately affects members of the African American community." From the very start, Markowitz and his colleagues believed that the answer to this question would be found through genetic analysis. "Identifying gene mutations has been the basis of all the new drugs that have been developed to treat cancer in the last decade," Markowitz said. "Many of the new cancer drugs on the market today were developed to target specific genes in which mutations were discovered to cause specific cancers." One of the lead researchers on the project was senior author Joseph E. Willis, MD, associate professor of pathology, Case Western Reserve School of Medicine, director of tissue management, Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Vice Chair of Pathology for Clinical Affairs at UH Case Medical Center. "We wondered if colon cancer is the same disease molecularly in African Americans individuals as it is in Caucasian individuals. Or could colon cancer be the same disease behaving differently in one population compared to another," he said. "This study gave us our answer. Colon cancer in African American patients is a different disease molecularly." The scientists made their discovery by using DNA sequencing to compare 103 colorectal cancer samples from African American patients with 129 colorectal cancer samples from white patients, all of whom had received care at UH Case Medical Center in Cleveland. The scientists examined 50 million bits of data from 20,000 genes in every cancer. From these extensive data, investigators first uncovered 20 new gene mutations in the colorectal cancers of African Americans that never before had been seen in patients with this disease. Investigators then confirmed that 15 of these gene mutations preferentially affected the African American patients. Just over 40% of cancers in African Americans carried mutations in one or more these genes. In addition, the scientists found that these mutations were 3.3-fold more common in African American cancers than in colorectal cancer tissues from whites. The investigators particularly zeroed in on mutations in 2 of these 15 genes, EPHA6 and FLCN, detected exclusively in African American patients. EPHA6 belongs to a family of proteins linked to causing cancer; this study marks the first time this gene has been implicated in colorectal cancer. In addition, individuals born with FLCN mutations are known to be susceptible to certain cancers. EPHA6 gene mutations were detected in 5.8% of colorectal cancers of African American patients, and FLCN gene were in 2.91%. "This is the first study to perform a comprehensive gene mutation characterization and comparison of these colorectal cancer tumors in two ethnicities - African American and Caucasian," said lead author Kishore Guda, DVM, PhD, assistant professor, General Medical Sciences (Oncology), Case Comprehensive Cancer Center. "Our next step will be to collaborate with other centers in investigating African American populations in different regions of the United States to determine whether they also share the unique gene signature found in the Cleveland African American community." In addition, these investigators want to delve into exactly how these mutations act and what they do, including whether these gene mutations make colon cancer act more aggressively.

An investigation by Kings College London and the BBC World Service found that in a single month, November 2014, 5042 people were killed by jihadists in 664 separate attacks across 14 countries. That is one death every eight minutes. Recently, the Islamist group Boko Haram (which translates as "Western education is forbidden") is believed to have murdered up to 2000 people in Nigeria. In the 35 years since the Islamic revolution in Iran in 1979, at least a million people have been killed in tens of thousands of jihad attacks, religious civil wars or wars between predominantly Muslim countries. In France, Muslims represent 60% of the prison population. Two of the three jihad killers in Paris had served time in prison. In Australia, Muslims are statistically more likely to engage in jihad than to enlist in the Australian Defense Forces. Islam does not make countries better, it makes them worse.

An Egyptian court has sentenced a student to three years in jail for announcing on Facebook that he is an atheist and for insulting Islam

Karim al-Banna, a 21-year-old whose own father testified against him, was jailed by a court in the Nile Delta province of Baheira. "He was handed down a three-year prison sentence, and if he pays a bail of 1,000 Egyptian pounds ($140 or 117 euros) the sentence can be suspended until a verdict is issued by an appeals court," Abdel Nabi said, adding that an appeal was to be heard on March 9, 2015. Abdel Nabi said that his client's father had testified against his son, charging that he "was embracing extremist ideas against Islam". Banna's name had appeared in a list of known atheists in a local daily after which his neighbors harassed him, said Ishaq Ibrahim, a researcher on religion and beliefs at the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights. When Banna went to file a complaint against them at a police station, he was accused of insulting Islam and arrested, said Ibrahim, who has been tracking Banna's case. Banna has been in custody since November 2014. In December 2012, a 27-year-old blogger, Alber Saber, was sentenced to three years in jail on charges of blasphemy. And in June 2014, a Coptic Christian man was sentenced to six years in jail for insulting Islam. The authorities have stepped up measures, including organizing workshops, to counter atheism.

A guru who ordered 400 of his followers to undergo castrations that he said would bring them closer to God has been put under investigation by police in India

India's top crime fighting agency registered a case against Gurmeet Ram Rahim - known as the "guru in bling" for his penchant for garish clothes and jewellery - over the operations at his ashram. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said that Rahim is being investigated for criminal intimidation and causing grievous bodily harm after an alleged 400 castrations were carried out. The guru, who heads the Dera Sacha Sauda organisation based in Haryana state, is already facing trial for conspiracy over the murder of a journalist in 2002, as well as with claims of sexually exploiting female followers. The latest case was filed after one of his devotees, Hansraj Chauhan, lodged a complaint in court alleging that he was manipulated into having the painful operation at the ashram. Rahim stars in an action movie to be released soon called "MSG: Messenger of God" in which the guru fights criminals, sings songs and is shown dousing himself in water in slow motion after a rugby game. India has been rocked by numerous scandals involving popular godmen who are mostly Hindu ascetics claiming to possess mystical powers. In November 2014, police arrested Baba Rampal Maharaj after a long and violent siege at his ashram in Haryana when he refused to comply with court orders in a murder case. In a bizarre case, devotees of a dead guru are fighting a court battle in Punjab state to preserve his body in a freezer, insisting that he is only meditating.

New research provides insights into the ties between certain genetic variants and kidney disease in African Americans

African Americans have a 4-fold increased risk for chronic kidney disease compared with European Americans. Recent work from several research groups has shown that much of this risk is due to genetic variations in a gene called apolipoprotein L1 (APOL1), which creates a protein that is a component of HDL, or good cholesterol. These variants arose tens of thousands of years ago in sub-Saharan Africa, and so are present in individuals who have recent sub-Saharan African ancestry. Approximately 5 million African Americans carry APOL1 risk variants, placing them at increased risk for kidney disease. The investigators found that 72% of self-identified African Americans in the study had APOL1 risk variants.

Police have arrested five men, including two brothers. Authorities say that the young academic was staying in Kolkata when a man who speaks fluent Japanese lured her away by posing as a tour guide. He and other accomplices then held her in a village near Bodh Gaya, a popular destination because of its Buddhist pilgrimage center, and repeatedly raped her. The men have been charged with gang rape, wrongful confinement, kidnapping, molestation, and criminal conspiracy.

New York City: Whites are far more likely to be shot by the police than blacks when their crime rates are taken into account

Whites were 5% of all suspects shot by the police in 2013 though they committed only 2% of New York City’s shootings — a 250% disparity. Blacks were 75% of criminal shooters and 79% of police shooting victims — virtual parity.

A Latino has been arrested for murder after he decapitated his mother at the family's Oldsmar home on New Year's Eve 2014, all because of a chore he didn't want to complete

The County Sheriff's Office has charged 23-year-old Christian Jose Gomez of 1924 Sheffield Court in Oldsmar with first-degree murder. Investigators responded to the home on 12/31/2014 at 7:24 p.m. where they found the decapitated body of the victim, who deputies say is Gomez's mother, 48-year-old Maria Suarez-Cassagne. According to Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, Gomez hit his mother over the head with an axe, then cut her head off her in the garage and dragged the body to the garbage outside the home. The Sheriff says that Gomez had been planning his mother's murder for two days. According to investigators, Gomez was angry over his mother "nagging" to put boxes away in the attic. Gualtieri says that Gomez admitted he put his mother's head in a garbage can outside the home and then attempted to put her body in the garbage, as well, but it was too heavy. Cassagne's body was found by her older son, Gomez's 26-year-old brother, Mario Gomez. The brother was home at the time of the crime, but thought that the noises he heard was Gomez putting the boxes away. "He went to the garage, he found an axe laying on the floor," said Gualtieri. "He found a blood trail and he followed that outside to the side of the house and when he went outside, he found his mother laying there on the ground next to a trash can, and unfortunately his mother had been decapitated, so he immediately called the sheriff's office." Gomez had left the home by the time deputies arrived, but was found riding his bike just several blocks away a short time later. A brief chase ensued and Gomez was taken into custody. Sheriff Gualtieri confirms that Gomez was diagnosed with schizophrenia and prescribed medications, but it's unclear if he was taking them. Gomez also told deputies that he was also angry at his mother because he felt that she favored his brother more than him. Gomez has prior arrests in Pinellas County for loitering and prowling, resisting officer without violence, and disorderly conduct.
