In the first genome-wide association study (GWAS) of genetic risk factors for inflammatory bowel disease in African Americans, a research team has identified two regions of the genome (loci) associated with ulcerative colitis only in people of African descent

The study identified single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) - at ZNF649 and at LSAMP - with genome-wide significance in ulcerative colitis. These SNPs are very specific to sub-Saharan Africans and are not found in any other populations - making these findings unique and novel. This is the first time African- specific loci are known to contribute to inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), and these loci will be added to the already known 200+ loci in IBD to further expand the IBD genetic architecture. The team also found evidence of overlapping genome-wide associations for ulcerative colitis and IBD in African- Americans and other populations. The detection of variants associated with IBD risk in only people of African descent demonstrates the importance of studying the genetics of IBD and other complex diseases in populations beyond those of European ancestry.

German police have arrested a 19-year-old Moroccan migrant on suspicion of raping a 90-year-old woman who had been attending a church service

Dusseldorf police have announced that they had arrested the man after they had launched a search for the assailant after the daylight attack on the grandmother. The elderly woman had left in the church in the heart of the German city center when the assailant pushed her into a narrow alley between two pubs. In the alley, which is usually closed off to the public and used for storing rubbish from the pubs, the perpetrator is said to have demanded money from the woman before sexually assaulting her. Dusseldorf police were able to construct a likeness of the suspect after a police officer recognized the man at a trains station. The DNA of the man, a Moroccan migrant who had previously lived in Spain, matched the traces found at the crime scene. The man had been previously arrested for robbing a teenager in May 2016. The news comes after the chief of the German police union Rainer Wendt said that criminal migrants from north Africa were laughing at the German justice system as they are often allowed to go free after committing crimes. “They despise our country and laugh at our justice,” Wendt said. “If there is no pre-trial detention made, no imprisonment is imposed, and no deportations carried out then the police make multiple arrests and the perpetrators get away with it,” he added and stated that the migrants are often then released. Wendt also referred to the Casablanca Report that documented around 2,244 North African migrant criminals in the city of Dusseldorf and the police union leader stated that the figures were similar for other German cities around the country. Earlier in 2016 refugees burnt down a shelter for asylum seekers in the city amid claims that the fire had been started over a dispute over food.

Milwaukee: A black police officer who fatally shot another black man in August 2016, sparking several nights of unrest, has been charged with sexually assaulting a man the night after the shooting, after they watched coverage of the riots on television at a bar

Officer Dominique Heaggan-Brown, 24, has been arrested. The alleged victim, unidentified in a criminal complaint, told police on August 15, 2016 that Heaggan-Brown had sexually assaulted him while off duty. Heaggan-Brown fatally shot 23-year-old Sylville Smith on August 13, 2016. Police said that he was holding a gun when he was shot after a brief chase. Police said that Heaggan-Brown is suspended and in custody and they have launched an internal investigation. Police Chief Ed Flynn said that nothing in Heaggan-Brown's pre-hiring background check suggested that he would be likely to engage in wrongdoing. Heaggan-Brown's attorney, Michael Steinle, didn't immediately respond to messages seeking comment. Heaggan-Brown's bail was set at $100,000. He's set to appear at a preliminary hearing on October 27, 2016.

Eight members of a South Asian sex gang in Rotherham, England have been convicted of sexually exploiting teenage girls after making them suffer degrading and violent acts

ageer Hussain, 30, openly boasted that he was racist and told his distraught 13-year-old white victim: "All white girls are good for is sex and they are just sl*gs." Sageer was convicted of four rapes and one indecent assault and his elder brother Basharat, 40, of indecent assault against the same girl at Sheffield Crown Court. Six other members of the gang were also found guilty of a further ten charges of sexually abusing the three girls – and face jail when sentenced. Sageer’s victim - who is now 27 - told police, their MP and the then home secretary David Blunkett that she had been repeatedly raped by Sageer. But the allegations were dropped after men threatened to burn down the family home and gang-rape her mother.

Black women under the age of 45 are at increased risk for an aggressive form of breast cancer [estrogen receptor (ER) negative] if they experienced a high number of pregnancies, never breast fed, and/or had higher waist-to-hip ratio

Mortality from breast cancer is markedly higher in African American women as compared to white women in the United States, in part because they are more likely to be diagnosed with ER-negative tumors, which are more aggressive and difficult to treat. African American women are also diagnosed with breast cancer at younger ages.

The largest study of genetic variation in the human Y chromosome has revealed that half of all western European men are descended from an individual male thought to have lived 4,000 years ago

The team of researchers believe that this man was one of the earliest people to rule Europe in the Bronze Age. The study also shows explosive rises in male population numbers between 55,000 and 4,000 years ago. Using data from the 1000 Genomes Project, the study analyses the sequence differences of 1,244 human Y chromosomes from 26 populations around the world. Analyzing the Y chromosome of modern men can help us discover the history of our ancestors. The Y chromosome, which is only passed from father to son, is linked to male characteristics and behaviors. The team of 42 researchers involved in the study used the data from the 1,244 Y chromosomes to build a tree that reveals how the men are related to one another genetically. All the men studied were proven to have descended from a single man who lived approximately 190,000 years ago. Lead author Dr Yali Xue from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute said that this pattern tells us that there was an explosive increase in the number of men carrying a certain type of Y chromosome, within just a few generations. They only observed this phenomenon in males, and only in a few groups of men. One of the scientists involved in the study, Dr Chris Tyler-Smith, said that genetics can't tell us why it happened but they know that a tiny number of elite males were controlling reproduction and dominating the population. With half of western Europe descending from just one man, there can only be speculations as to why these increases in population happened. The results reveal that the earliest explosions in population occurred 50,000-55,000 years ago, across Asia and Europe, and a later explosion occurred 15,000 years ago in the Americas. The researchers believe this increase in population may be due to the movement of humans out of Africa and settling in Europe and Asia, where there were plenty of resources allowing the population to thrive. The study states that there was a notable increase in the number of lineages outside Africa around 50,000-55,000 years ago, perhaps reflecting the geographical expansion and differentiation of Eurasian populations as they settled the vast expanse of these continents. Later explosions in population occurred between 4,000 and 8,000 years ago in sub-Saharan Africa, Western Europe, South Asia, and East Asia. The later population increases are thought to be explored by advances in technology. The best explanation is they may have resulted from advances in technology that could be controlled by small groups of men. Wheeled transport, metal working and organized warfare are all candidate explanations that can now be investigated further. The data used in this study was gathered from the 1000 Genomes Project, which ran between 2008 and 2015, creating the largest public catalogue of genetic variation in the human Y chromosome.

If the Black Lives Matter crowd really cared about black lives they would work to convince their "brothers" to stop shooting each other, since that is overwhelmingly where most blacks are killed

They might also think a bit about reducing the horrific levels of violent crime that seems to be part and parcel of their manhood ritual, which is why police target them in the first place. Whatever credibility BLM has is wasted when they embrace the cause of thugs like Michael Brown, a six-foot-four 265-pound monster who robbed a convenience store and beat up a clerk before trying to wrestle a gun away from a cop.

A Mexican judge who presided over appeals by drug cartel figures including Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman has been assassinated while jogging outside his home

Judge Vicente Bermudez, 37, was executed by a gunman who ran up and shot him in the back of the head. The killing happened in Metepec, 40 miles from Mexico City, and was captured by a surveillance camera. The judge had dealt with legal challenges brought by lawyers representing Guzman, the head of the Sinaloa drug cartel. The judge had also dealt with appeals by lawyers on behalf of Miguel Trevino, ex-leader of the Zetas cartel. Trevino is being held at the maximum security Altiplano jail which is close to the judge's home. Guzman's lawyers have filed numerous legal challenges aimed at preventing his extradition to the United States.

Five men and a woman have been found alive on a road in western Mexico with their hands amputated and their foreheads marked with the words "I'm a thief"

The victims were mutilated by a criminal group linked to drug trafficking, which also left a dead man on the road and two bags with the severed hands in Tlaquepaque, near Guadalajara, Mexico's second biggest city, police said. "They're in a delicate state of health," local police commander Roberto Larios said. "Their stumps were wrapped in plastic." Drug cartels often leave the dismembered bodies of victims on roadsides in Mexico, making the discovery of six mutilated people alive all the more unusual. The dead man, 39, was apparently beaten to death and his hands were not cut off. He was married to the woman, who is 44. The other men are aged between 25 and 43. Authorities suspect that the gruesome crime is linked to drug dealing. Two of the victims have rap sheets. Witnesses say that the victims were driven to the site in two vehicles and abandoned there with a note that said "this happened to us for being thieves." The message, signed "anti-thief elite group," also threatens thieves and those who abuse women or children. The western state of Jalisco, where Guadalajara is located, has seen horrific acts of violence in recent years linked to the powerful Jalisco New Generation drug cartel.

Female journalist raped by knife-wielding migrants at Jungle camp in Calais, France

A female interpreter working on a documentary about the plight of vulnerable refugee children has been raped at knife-point in the Calais migrant camp, French police have revealed. The terrified 38-year-old was robbed by three armed men from the Jungle, one of whom raped her whilst the other two threatened her colleague with a blade. The unidentified woman, who was helping a journalist from a French news broadcaster, was attacked in the early hours of this morning at the entrance of the notorious shanty town. French prosecutors have confirmed that they had proof the woman was raped and have collected DNA evidence to help them find the attackers. The trio are believed to be from Afghanistan, and are now on the run from the police. The woman was living in Paris, although originally from Afghanistan, and had been employed to interpret for migrants speaking the Pashtun language which is common in her homeland and neighboring Pakistan. The shocking incident is just the latest example of the extreme violence plaguing the Calais migrant camp, and comes just a day after journalists from Sky News were attacked by asylum seekers hurling rocks.

A Jewish mother made a bomb threat to a synagogue and tried to pin it on another parent after a row over a children's party invite escalated into a viscous harassment campaign

Claire Mann, 48, bombarded Roz Page with abusive messages and tried to blame her for the hoax by sending similar texts to her own phone. As part of the campaign she sent a text to the local synagogue claiming that there was a bomb in a hotel where Israeli guests were staying, Wood Green Crown Court heard. Page claims the harassment began because Mann believed her eight-year-old daughter had been snubbed when she didn't receive a birthday party invitation. Mann was convicted of two counts of intending to pervert the course of justice. The first relates to the bomb hoax and harassment between July 1 and July 21 2013, while the second relates to a separate claim at the Family Court that she was a qualified psychologist.

Blacks in London are nearly five times more likely to be homeless than white people

African and Afro-Caribbean people are 4.6 times more likely to have been accepted as “homeless and in priority need” by their local authority compared to white Londoners. The three worst London boroughs are Haringey, where black people are 9.5 times more likely to be homeless, Kingston-upon-Thames (9.2) and Harrow (7.5). The research, using 2015-16 local council data, also found that Asians in London are 1.5 times more likely to be homeless and in priority need — the highest category of homelessness.

Potatoes and cereals increase the risk of heart disease while high fat dairy products cut the risk, according to a new study which rejects accepted wisdom on a healthy diet

The research, which looked at dietary habits in 42 European countries over 16 years, conflicts with current government nutrition guidance and has led to calls for new advice to be issued. The work examined food consumption, heart disease and cholesterol levels in the most up-to-date international statistics and raised questions about the reliability of traditional data, much of which was carried out decades ago. Dr Pavel Grasgruber, a sports scientist and lead author of the study, from Masaryk University in the Czech Republic, called for current dietary advice to be overturned. He said: “Current heart disease risk is based on flawed data. This study flies in the face of accepted wisdom on diet. It is quite clear consumption of dairy products and meat is not linked with heart disease risk, as was traditionally believed. The biggest problem are cereals, wheat and potatoes, which increase the risk of heart disease. "I can responsibly recommend people change their diets and to lower their carbohydrate load.” Dr Grasgruber said that red meat appeared to have no direct effect on heart disease risk. However, high fat dairy products such as cheese seem to have a protective effect, which is also supported by recent evidence. He recommended high consumption of citrus fruit, walnuts, olives, fish, vegetables and dairy for low heart disease risk and longevity. Leading cardiologist Dr Aseem Malhotra said: “This modern day study supports the growing view that the real dietary factors driving heart disease are the consumption of excess carbohydrate in the form of rice, wheat and potato.” Dr Malcolm Kendrick said: “The rate of heart disease goes down with a high cholesterol diet which suggests any link between fat, cholesterol and heart disease can now be refuted.” Dr Trudi Deakin, a leading nutritionist, said: “The 1983 dietary guidelines came in the absence of any rigorous trial data to show saturated fat caused cardiovascular disease and were based on flawed science from the 1950s and 1960s.”

An 87-year-old woman repeatedly up before the courts for denying that the Holocaust took place – has been handed down a new 11-month term behind bars in Germany

Ursula Haverbeck-Wetzel remains free while she appeals the latest sentence meted out at a court in Germany. A court in the German spa town of Bad Oeynhausen found her guilty of breaking Germany's strict post-war rules making the denial of Nazi war crimes an imprisonable offence. In this instance, she denied in published articles that the Holocaust happened and that the death factory of Auschwitz in Nazi-occupied Poland was nothing more than a labor camp. The court heard she also wrote to the Central Council of Jews in Germany claiming that the mass murder of six million Jews had never taken place. It is the seventh time Haverbeck-Wetzel has been sentenced for denying the Holocaust, the third time she had received a jail sentence. In 2004, she founded a group that campaigned against the Holocaust having taken place - a group that the government banned six years later. In Germany, anyone who publicly denies, endorses or plays down the extermination of Jews during Adolf Hitler's regime can be sentenced to a maximum of five years in jail.

Police in Alabama have arrested four black men in connection with the beating of a white Alabama high school student who had posted pro-Blue Lives Matter Comments in support of cops

In a statement, Sylacauga Police Chief Kelley Johnson says that four recent Sylacauga High School students were arrested following the September 30, 2016 attack against 17-year-old Brian Ogle. Ogle's mother, Brandi Allen, says that her son responded to students wearing Black Lives Matter T-shirts at his school with Blue Lives Matter. He was hospitalized with serious head injuries. Two of the four suspects, 20-year-old Quartez Walker and 19-year-old Bobby Brown, were taken into custody at Stillman College. La Noah Ealy Jr, 18, was arrested at Auburn University in Montgomery, while 20-year-old Daveon Nix was arrested in Sylacauga. Walker was booked on a first-degree assault charge and his bond was set at $20,000. The other three suspects face charges of second-degree assault and are being held on $15,000 each.

An illegal immigrant from El Salvador is charged with kidnapping a 6-year-old girl from her Texas home and sexually assaulting her

He’s been identified as Edis Moya Alas of El Salvador. Police say that they found the girl with Alas at Titus Park, not far from her home. They made the big break thanks to a neighbor who reported hearing screams in the area. “The young child immediately saw police officers and ran towards us. She was very scared. She was very nervous,” Fort Worth PD said. “We owe a great debt to the citizen that actually heard the screams and notified us to go into that field area.” The girl’s parents woke up around four o’clock Saturday morning to find their front door open and their daughter gone. Alas is charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child and aggravated kidnapping.

Indian teen dies after 68-day fast

For more than two months, a 13-year-old in India took part in an extreme religious fast. Recently she called off that fast, but she fell into a coma two days later and died of cardiac arrest and now her parents, well-off jewelers in Hyderabad, and other family members have been charged with homicide. Aradhana Samdariya's relatives insist that she chose to embark on the 68-day fast of her own volition as part of a ritual in Jainism, an ancient Indian religion that believes "the way to liberation and bliss is to live lives of harmlessness and renunciation" and whose foundation lies in the "concern for the welfare of every being in the universe." But others, including the children's rights group that filed the complaint against Aradhana's family, say that the young teen was coerced, perhaps in the misguided belief it would make her father's business more profitable. Aradhana's grandfather notes that it's not the first time the girl had fasted: He says that she had pulled off an eight-day fast and a 34-day fast, and so was determined to go even longer this time. Apparently the father's business was faltering and the family's guru suggested having Aradhana fast for good luck. According to some accounts she lived on nothing but boiled water during her starvation. Psychologists say that children are especially vulnerable to the guilt that may lure them into such dangerous practices. "The child is made to believe it is for the good of the family," one expert says. "What is sacrificed is the health of the minor."

Despite the concept of a united Ireland being at the core of Irish political debate since partition in 1921, it is astonishing how little in-depth study has been done exploring what it would be like

How would the administration work? Would it involve any major societal changes? Would it be an economic success or basket case? A team of academics from Canada, Switzerland and the US have now tackled the economics question, and have modelled how a 32-county Ireland might fare economically. Their conclusions? Surprisingly good. Reunification could deliver a boon to the enlarged island state worth over €35 billion in eight years. And the North would benefit enormously, with more modest gains for the South. Dr Kurt Hübner from the University of British Colombia in Vancouver led the project, entitled Modelling Irish Unification. Hübner, originally from Germany, received his academic qualifications from the University of Berlin and is an expert on European affairs. He outlines the basis of the research that concluded that a united Ireland would be a winner on the economic sphere. The study required modelling to foresee how the dual economics might combine and that work was done by Renger van Nieuwkoon from Switzerland. Hübner and his colleagues were able to avail of their familiarity with similar work that had been done in Germany after reunification.

‘Birth of a Nation’ flops in opening weekend at box office

“The Birth of a Nation” flopped at the box office in its opening weekend, cementing its place among the steepest falls from grace in recent Hollywood history. The biopic about slave rebellion leader Nat Turner was thought to have the makings of a commercial and critical hit when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2016. Ten months later, it opened to an estimated $7.1 million in sixth place with its awards prospects severely hampered, even though it opened in more than 2,100 locations, an unusually wide rollout for a low-budget film. Renewed scrutiny of rape allegations leveled against its director and star, Nate Parker, have completely overwhelmed the movie’s rollout and sparked public debates about whether seeing the movie was a tacit endorsement of its creator.

Mexican man accused of raping eight-year-old ordered to buy her father beer

A 55-year-old former pastor in Mexico was accused of sexually abusing an 8-year-old girl. His punishment? He had to buy her father two crates of beer. The Mexican was only arrested and charged with aggravated rape after media coverage of the incident drew outrage. The sexual assault took place in the "remote indigenous community" of Santiago Quetzalapa, which is ruled by a system known as "traditions and customs." The system allows indigenous people to maintain traditions, but it also allows their leaders to make decisions based on belief instead of the law. The head of a human rights organization in Mexico says that under traditions and customs many sexual violence cases "are settled this way: with a bottle of liquor."

Yawning doesn't mean you're bored, it just means you've got one big, hot brain in your head, according to a new study

Researcher Andrew Gallup had his students go online to collect videos of animals yawning. He then found that he was able to predict the yawn length of various animals based on their brain weight and the number of brain cells in their cortex. “We were just really blown out of the water,” Gallup said. “It’s such a strong predictor.” Perhaps surprisingly, body and mouth size had nothing to do with yawn length. The explanation for brain size correlating to yawn length comes from a theory first proposed by Gallup in 2007. He argues that animals yawn involuntarily to cool their brains. If that's true, it stands to reason that larger brains would require a larger yawn to cool. And it explains why humans' yawns, at 6.5 seconds, are the longest yawns in the animal kingdom, beating out those of gorillas, lions, elephants, and more. However, not all scientists are convinced yawning serves a cooling function, pointing to its contagiousness as evidence of a sociological function. Gallup isn't swayed. “Whether yawning functions specifically to cool the brain can still be debated, but there is no debate on whether yawning has thermoregulatory consequences," he says.

A new report presented by Gil Troy of McGill University in Canada, shows that 50% of donations to Hillary Clinton’s campaign come from Jewish contributors

The study also found that 25% of donations to the Republican Party come from Jewish donors. Troy says that this is why presidential campaigns are aimed at Jews even though they only make up 2% of American voters. Professor Troy also stated that the electorate system is preferential towards states that have large Jewish populations like Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan. In those states, there isn’t a clear winner for either candidate but they have large Jewish electorates and that makes the Jews very powerful. Troy estimates that 70% of Jews will vote for Clinton in November 2016, which is similar to the percent of Jews that voted for Barack Obama in the last election. According to Troy, in meetings with Republican officials, Jewish contributors still mostly support the Democratic Party, despite the unwavering pro-Israeli policies of the Republican Party.

An Indian-origin lawyer with apparent Nazi sympathies went on an early morning rampage in Houston, shooting at nine people before he was killed by police

Nathan Desai was wearing military-style clothing with Nazi symbols during the shooting spree when he fired at passing cars. Police said that they did not know why Desai went on the rampage hitting people at random. Desai's name was written with the 's' capitalized in media reports in Houston, making it sound European, but his father has been identified as Prakash Desai.

Babies with big heads are more likely to be clever and have successful futures, a study has shown

Research carried out by UK Biobank has strongly linked higher intelligence with large head circumferences and brain volume. Half a million British people are being monitored by the charity to discover the connection between their genes, their physical and mental health and their path through life. The UK Biobank, launched in 2007, is a major long-term investigation into the respective contributions of genetic predisposition and environmental exposure in the development of disease. The latest evidence is the first finding to emerge from the study that aims to break down the relationship between brain function and DNA. Researchers found highly significant associations were observed between the cognitive test scores in the UK Biobank sample and many polygenic profile scores, including intracranial volume, infant head circumference and childhood cognitive ability. The researchers tested the participants in a variety of ways - looking into their verbal and numerical reasoning, reaction time, memory and educational attainment. Professor Ian Deary, of Edinburgh University, who is leading the research, said that gene variants were also strongly associated with intelligence. In addition to there being shared genetic influences between cognitive skills and some physical and mental health states, the study also found that cognitive skills share genetic influences with brain size, body shape and educational attainments, according to Deary. The researchers looked at 17 genes which affect brain function and impact mental and physical health. The new evidence is so accurate experts claim that it could even predict how likely it was that a baby would go to university based on their DNA. This builds on evidence from a study by the same team which found that clever people are more likely to be healthier than those with a lower IQ. This is due to a genetic link between how our bodies manage diseases and intelligence. The researchers analyzed data from around 100,000 people held in the UK Biobank. They compared each person's mental test data with their genome and found that traits linked to disease and thinking skills shared the same genetic influences.

Nationally, the murder of black Americans outpaces that of whites — 7,039 African-Americans were killed in 2015, compared with 5,854 whites

That is in a nation where 13% of Americans identify solely as African-American and 77% identify solely as white. In 2014, 698 more blacks were killed than whites, according to the FBI. In 2015, 1,185 more blacks were killed than whites.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights is demanding a full-scale investigation into the rape of at least 11 women at the hands of Mexican police during a crackdown on protesters in 2006 — a crackdown ordered by now-President Enrique Peña Nieto

Peña Nieto was the governor of the state of Mexico when hundreds of people took over a town square to protest police stopping vendors from selling flowers at a nearby market. More than 40 women — vendors, students, and activists — were violently arrested. The commission found that at least 11 women were "raped, beaten, penetrated with metal objects, robbed, and humiliated, made to sing aloud to entertain police." The government initially accused the women of making it up but eventually acknowledged the rape and abuse. Regardless, no police were ever prosecuted. Instead, the women were prosecuted, with five of them spending more than a year locked up on minor charges, such as blocking traffic. While Peña Nieto was not directly accused of wrongdoing by the commission, any thorough investigation would involve looking into his involvement in ordering the crackdown. It's yet another scandal for a president whose approval ratings have been tanking amid accusations of corruption and violence. In total, two protesters were killed and another 207 were "victims of cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment" in the 2006 incident.

Researchers have found that intelligence is always linked to chess skill no matter the age of the participant

If you were hoping to become a chess master by practicing 10,000 hours, think again. Contrary to the theory that expertise at chess is based on intensive training, researchers at the University of Michigan have concluded based on a meta-analysis of 19 studies that hard work is important but not enough. In this game, if you're not smart, you're probably sunk. "When it comes to expertise, training and practice certainly are a piece of the puzzle," psychology professor Zach Hambrick says. "But this study shows that, for chess at least, intelligence is another piece of the puzzle." The researchers found that intelligence is always linked to chess skill no matter the age of the participant, though the link appears strongest in younger players or those at lower skill levels. It's possible, the team suggests, that this is because upper-echelon players are all pretty bright anyway.

Recent census data shows that the most common age for Hispanics is 47 years younger than it is for whites

In the 1995-1996 California school year, whites made up 40.42% of students and Hispanics trailed with 38.74% of the student population. Fast forward 20 years and Hispanics make up 53.97% of California’s student population, and whites represent just 24.10%. The demographic shift seen in California public schools was even more significant in Texas. In the 1994-1995 school year, Hispanics made up 36.1% of students statewide, and another 46.9% were white. Twenty years later, Texas public school students are 29% white and 52% Hispanic. Texas, as a whole, is 38.8% Hispanic and 43.0% white. New York Department of Education figures show that between the school year ending in 2000 and 2014, public schools statewide got 9.2% less white, and 6.7% more Hispanic. The state during this same time period became just 5.4% less white, and 3.7% more Hispanic. In all three of these states, the proportion of black students remained relatively consistent. For the first time ever in 2014, minority babies outnumber white ones so the American school children population will continue to get less white.

Animal sacrifices as part of the Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha have combined with rain in Dhaka to form rivers of blood in the streets of the Bangladeshi capital

Poor drainage in the city makes flooding a regular fact of Dhaka life. But the problem is rarely illustrated as vividly as it was recently, after thousands of sheep, goats and cows were slaughtered. One of the two holiest events in the Muslim calendar, Eid al-Adha commemorates the willingness of the prophet Abraham to sacrifice his son at God’s request. Authorities in Dhaka said that they had established hundreds of designated sacrifice spots in the run-up to the festival to make it easier to clean away blood and animal carcasses. But local media said that most residents eschewed the special areas, preferring to make sacrifices in their garages or on the streets outside their homes. The result was a nightmarish blending of blood and water that filled streets and narrow lanes across Dhaka. “I felt I was walking through a post-apocalyptic neighborhood,” said Atish Saha, a Dhaka-based artist. “To be honest, I was scared. It was an image of mass violence that shouldn’t ever be experienced.” Particularly jarring was said to be the sight of families, including infants, wading into the flood in celebratory “Eid day” moods. “It made me speechless,” he said.

The majority of people who didn’t vote in the 2012 presidential election were white, middle-income and middle-aged

Among voters with little education, African-Americans are 1.7 times more likely to vote than whites. Black voters, particularly women, have the highest turnout rates over all. The turnout gap with whites is most pronounced at lower levels of income and education. Experts give several explanations for high black turnout, which has increased by nearly 20 percentage points since the mid-1990s. The presidential campaigns of Jesse Jackson and Barack Obama encouraged more African-Americans to register to vote, and black churches have played a strong role in mobilization. African-Americans are also more reliable partisan voters — more than 90% voted for President Obama in 2012 — so Democrats may be more likely to put resources toward getting them to turn out than other groups. Turnout rates for Hispanic voters are much lower over all. Language barriers and weaker connections to the political system are part of the explanation, said Melissa R. Michelson, a professor of political science at Menlo College in California. “There’s this idea that even if you are legally entitled to vote, you don’t see it as something that matters to you and your community,” she said. But Hispanic voters are not a homogeneous group. Hispanics who are naturalized citizens are more likely to vote than those born in the United States. Immigrant communities perceive a higher stake in election outcomes, Professor Michelson said. “Being an immigrant has become a politicized identity, and there’s a very clear connection between your identity as an immigrant and what’s going on in the political areas,” she said.

A prominent Satmar Hasidic rabbi from Israel and one of his followers have been arrested and charged in New York with plotting to kidnap and kill a man who refused to give his wife a religious divorce

Rabbi Aharon Goldberg, 55, and Shimen Liebowitz, 25, were charged in Manhattan Federal Court, the U.S. Justice Department said in a statement, one day after their arrest by the FBI. They recruited an unnamed man and paid him more than $55,000 to murder the recalcitrant husband. Though Goldberg is based in Israel, both men are said to be prominent members of the Kiryas Joel community in upstate New York. The paid hitman contacted the FBI in early July 2016 to report that he had been recruited to kidnap the recalcitrant husband in order to torture him and force him to issue a “get,” a religious Jewish divorce, to his wife. The kidnapping would take place either in Pennsylvania or in Uman, Ukraine, where the husband was scheduled to travel to celebrate Rosh Hashanah. The hitman was advanced $25,000 in order to plan the kidnapping, according to the FBI. Later meetings and conversations, in which the rabbi discussed the possibility of also killing the intended victim, identified as a taxi driver, were recorded. In a final conversation in September 2016, the rabbi told the hitman that he also wanted the husband killed. “As if the plan to kidnap the victim and force him to divorce his wife in this alleged conspiracy wasn’t bad enough, the plotters allegedly decided halfway through the arrangement to go a step further and add murder to the list of their planned crimes,” FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge William Sweeney Jr. said in the Justice Department statement. “Our country protects freedom of religious beliefs and practices, but no one is allowed to plot a kidnapping and murder regardless of their motivation.” Goldberg and Liebowitz are charged with one count each of conspiracy to commit kidnapping, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison, and one count each of conspiracy to commit murder for hire, which carries a maximum prison term of 10 years.

Indo-Japanese woman Priyanka Yoshikawa, who was recently crowned Miss Japan 2016, is now facing the ire of the purist Japanese, for being a haafu or only half-Japanese

While many people supported her and portrayed her as the icon of the racial diversity of Japan, some took it to social media to question her ethnicity of being a haafu, the Japanese word for “half,” used to represent a mixed race person. Many people supporting the haafu argument raised questions whether people from mixed-race backgrounds were given preference over racially pure Japanese in beauty contests. “I don’t mean to discriminate against races or appearances, but are the haafu people given preferential treatment in beauty contests these days?” tweeted a user going by the Twitter handle @cyokuri. Some people went on to say that the contest should have been won by a racially pure Japanese. This is the second year in a row, that a bi-racial person is winning the Miss Japan beauty contest. Last year, Ariana Miyamoto, a 22-year-old half-African was crowned as Miss Japan and she represented the country on the world stage. Born in Tokyo to an Indian father and a Japanese mother, Yoshikawa is a trained kick boxer and holds an elephant trainer’s license. Despite raising questions about her ethnicity, Yoshikawa has decided to fight against the racial prejudice. “Before Ariana, haafu girls couldn’t represent Japan. That’s what I thought too. I didn’t doubt it or challenge it until this day. Ariana encouraged me a lot by showing me and showing all mixed girls the way,” Yoshikawa said. Yoshikawa has gone through many bad experiences in Japan because of her racial background. She was bullied because of her skin color when she returned to Japan after spending about 10 years in the United States and in India. “We have problems, we’ve been struggling and it hurts. When I came back to Japan, everyone thought I was a germ,” she said about the struggles of bi-racial people in Japan. Multi-racial children make up only 2% of those born annually.

British MPs have urged China’s ambassador to intervene in a row over racist comments issued by a Chinese airline about ethnic minority areas of London

An image of text from an inflight Air China magazine posted on social media prompted outrage after it warned passengers that “precautions are needed when entering areas mainly populated by Indians, Pakistanis and black people”. The text, tweeted by Beijing-based producer Haze Fan of US news channel CNBC, added: “We advise tourists not to go out alone at night, and females always to be accompanied by another person when travelling.”

A black man is on the run after killing his 15-year-old son, critically wounding his ex-wife and then confessing to the horrific attack in a Facebook Live video

Earl Valentine kicked in the back door to Keisha Valentine’s home in North Carolina before shooting her and their son Earl Jr in the chest at point-blank range. Valentine posted a video on his Facebook page after the assault admitting to his ex-wife’s shooting, Norlina police chief Taylor Bartholomew said. “She lied on me, had warrants taken out on me. She drug me all the way down to nothing,” Valentine said in the video. “I loved my wife, but she deserved what she had coming.” Bartholomew said officers are hunting Valentine after he indicated that he was on his way to Richmond, Virginia, to kill other family members. The fugitive’s relatives have been put under police protection. Valentine is facing a first-degree murder charge in his son’s death.

Black Lives or Black Lies?

Here are some facts about race and crime in America from Heather Mac Donald:
* Blacks constituted 62% of all robbery defendants in America's 75 largest counties in 2009, 57% of all murder defendants and 45% of all assault defendants, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, even though blacks comprise only 15% of the population in those counties.
* In New York City, where blacks make up 23% of the city's population, blacks commit three-quarters of all shootings and 70% of all robberies, according to victims and witnesses in their reports to the New York Police Department. Whites, by contrast, commit less than 2% of all shootings and 4% of all robberies, though they are nearly 34% of the city's population.
* In Chicago, 80% of all known murder suspects were black in 2015, as were 80% of all known nonfatal shooting suspects, though they are a little less than a third of the population. Whites made up 0.9% of known murder suspects in Chicago in 2015 and 1.4% of known nonfatal shooting suspects, though they are about a third of the city's residents.
* Police shootings are responsible for a lower percentage of black homicide deaths than white and Hispanic homicide deaths. Twelve percent of all whites and Hispanics who die of homicide are killed by police officers, compared to 4% of black homicide victims.
* More blacks die each year from homicide, more than 6,000, than homicide victims of all other races combined. Their killers are not the police, and not whites, but other blacks.
* Blacks commit homicide at eight times the rate of whites and Hispanics combined.
* Black males between the ages of 14-17 commit gun homicide at nearly 10 times the rate of white and Hispanic male teens combined.
* The most sophisticated lab study of police shoot-don't-shoot decisions to date found that officers were three times less likely to shoot unarmed black suspects than unarmed white suspects and took significantly longer to decide to shoot armed black suspects than armed white suspects.
* Harvard economist Roland Fryer found that police officers in Houston were nearly 24% less likely to shoot blacks than whites. In a data set comprising officer shootings from Dallas, Austin, Houston, Los Angeles and six Florida counties, he found that officers were 47% less likely to discharge their weapon without first being attacked if the suspect was black than if the suspect was white, and that black and white victims of police shootings were equally likely to have been armed. Overall, Fryer found no evidence of racial discrimination in shootings.
* An analysis of police use of force by the Center for Policing Equity concluded that whites were disadvantaged compared to blacks when it comes to lethal force. Officers' use of lethal force following an arrest for a violent felony was over twice the rate for white arrestees than for black arrestees.
* Police officers are far more likely to be killed by a black person than vice versa. Over the past decade, black males comprised 40% of all cop killers, though they are 6% of the population. That means that an officer is 18.5 times more likely to be killed by a black male than an unarmed black male is to be killed by a police officer.
* Violent crime is rising in cities with large black populations. Homicides in 2015 rose anywhere from 54% in Washington, D.C., to 90% in Cleveland. In the nation's 56 largest cities, homicides rose 17% in 2015, a nearly unprecedented one-year spike. In the first half of 2016, homicides in 51 large cities were up another 15% compared to the same period last year.

A study out of Columbia University suggests that Walmart deliberately runs much better stores in white neighborhoods than in minority neighborhoods

The study found that stores in lower-income neighborhoods have considerably lower customer service ratings than those in wealthier ones. More specifically, the higher the percentage of black or Latino residents in an area, the lower the Walmart rating. The authors analyzed Yelp reviews of 2,840 stores and found that those in predominantly black areas tend to be rated with words like "nasty," "terrible," and "unorganized," while those in white areas tend to be described as "friendly," "clean," and "pleasant."

Should an elderly woman with a serious head injury be president of the United States?

In December 2012, Hillary Clinton suffered a concussion and then around the New Year had a blood clot. Based on her doctor’s advice, she could only work at State for a few hours a day and could not recall every briefing she received.

A Muslim refugee who raped a ten-year-old boy has claimed that he did not know sexually assaulting the child was wrong as it was culturally acceptable in his homeland

Mufiz Rahaman told Sydney's Downing Centre Court that raping children was not seen as morally wrong in his native Myanmar when he pleaded guilty to the aggravated sexual assault of a 10-year-old refugee. The 20-year-old and his young victim are both stateless Rohingya Muslims - a group of people considered illegal immigrants from Bangladesh by the Buddhist-majority in Myanmar - who came to Australia to flee religious persecution. The court heard that Rahaman preyed on the young boy while he was living with a group of refugees, including his father, at a vacant RSL club in Lakemba, a suburb in Sydney's south west, on January 8, 2015. According to documents tendered to the court, he crept into the child's bedroom - which he shared with his father - as he slept and took off the boy's underpants. He then raped the boy, who arrived in Australia in 2013, while his father was in another room preparing lunch.

Gabrielle Union, star of Nate Parker's Birth of a Nation, is a rape survivor

Since finding out about the rape allegations leveled against the director years ago — the 1999 accusations made headlines recently after it was revealed that the accuser committed suicide — she has found herself "in a state of stomach-churning confusion," she writes. "I cannot take these allegations lightly. On that night, 17-odd years ago, did Nate have his date’s consent? It’s very possible he thought he did. Yet by his own admission he did not have verbal affirmation; and even if she never said 'no,' silence certainly does not equal 'yes.'"

A University of Adelaide-led project has overturned the theory that the evolution of human intelligence was simply related to the size of the brain - but rather linked more closely to the supply of blood to the brain

The international collaboration between Australia and South Africa showed that the human brain evolved to become not only larger, but more energetically costly and blood thirsty than previously believed. The research team calculated how blood flowing to the brain of human ancestors changed over time, using the size of two holes at the base of the skull that allow arteries to pass to the brain. The findings allowed the researchers to track the increase in human intelligence across evolutionary time. "Brain size has increased about 350% over human evolution, but we found that blood flow to the brain increased an amazing 600%," says project leader Professor Emeritus Roger Seymour, from the University of Adelaide. "We believe this is possibly related to the brain's need to satisfy increasingly energetic connections between nerve cells that allowed the evolution of complex thinking and learning. To allow our brain to be so intelligent, it must be constantly fed oxygen and nutrients from the blood. The more metabolically active the brain is, the more blood it requires, so the supply arteries are larger. The holes in fossil skulls are accurate gauges of arterial size." The study was a new collaboration between the Cardiovascular Physiology team in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Adelaide and the Brain Function Research Group and Evolutionary Studies Institute at the University of the Witwatersrand. Co-author Dr Edward Snelling, University of the Witwatersrand, says: "Ancient fossil skulls from Africa reveal holes where the arteries supplying the brain passed through. The size of these holes show how blood flow increased from three million-year-old Australopithecus to modern humans. The intensity of brain activity was, before now, believed to have been taken to the grave with our ancestors." Honors student and co-author Vanya Bosiocic had the opportunity to travel to South Africa and work with anthropologists on the oldest hominin skull collection, including the newly-discovered Homo naledi. "Throughout evolution, the advance in our brain function appears to be related to the longer time it takes for us to grow out of childhood. It is also connected to family cooperation in hunting, defending territory and looking after our young," Bosiocic says. "The emergence of these traits seems to nicely follow the increase in the brain's need for blood and energy."

A shortage of transplant organs for black people and Asians in Britain is being caused by a lack of donations from within those communities, NHS Blood and Transplant has said

Fewer than a third of black and Asian families allow a dead relative's organs to be used, compared with two-thirds of white families. More than 1,300 people died waiting for a transplant in Britain in 2015. The NHS said that ethnic minority groups needed to discuss organ donation. Although people from ethnic minorities can receive organs from white donors, the best match is often from a person with the same ethnic background.

Colon cancer in African American patients is a different disease molecularly than it is in whites

Case Comprehensive Cancer Center researchers, a research collaboration which includes University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center and Case Western Reserve University, who in 2015 identified new gene mutations unique to colon cancers in African Americans, have found that tumors with these mutations are highly aggressive and more likely to recur and metastasize. These findings partly may explain why African Americans have the highest incidence and death rates of any group for this disease. The study found 15 genes in African Americans that are rarely or never detected as mutated in colon cancers from whites. The current study investigated the outcomes associated with these mutations in African American colorectal cancer. The researchers examined 66 patients who had stage I - III colorectal cancer and found that those patients positive for the mutations had an almost three times higher rate of metastatic disease, and stage III patients positive with mutations were nearly three times more likely to relapse compared to patients without the mutations. "This study is significant because it helps shed further light on why colorectal cancers are more aggressive in African Americans compared to other groups," said the study's senior author Joseph E. Willis, MD, Chief of Pathology at University Hospitals Case Medical Center and Professor of Pathology at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine. "While mortality rates for Caucasian men with colorectal cancer have decreased by up to 30%, they have increased by 28% for African American men since 1960," said Dr. Willis, who is also director of tissue management in the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center. These findings and the earlier study only became possible because of technological advances in gene sequencing and computational analysis. These studies ultimately involved review of 1.5 billion bits of data.

Visiting India? According to the country's tourism minister, foreign women shouldn't wear short dresses or skirts while there

They also shouldn't walk alone at night. Both of those tips are included in the safety advice given to women in a welcome kit tourists receive when they enter the country, Mahesh Sharma said recently, explaining that "Indian culture is different from the western" when it comes to things like clothing. The comments come amid a slew of sexual assaults and attacks on both locals and female tourists in India, and caused a bit of an outcry. The irresponsible remarks illustrate the syndrome of blaming women for assaults, says one gender equality advocate.

Authorities say that they have charged a black man in connection with the murder of two nuns who were found dead in their home in Mississippi

Rodney Earl Sanders, 46, has been charged with two counts of capital murder, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said in a statement. Sanders, of Kosciusko, is charged in connection with the killings of Sister Margaret Held and Sister Paula Merrill, both 68, who were found dead in their home in the rural town of Durant, the bureau said. "Sanders was developed as a person of interest early on in the investigation," MBI Director Lt. Colonel Jimmy Jordan said in a statement. "With the cooperation of the Durant and Kosciusko Police Departments, Holmes County Sheriff's Department and the Attorney General Office this heinous crime has been resolved." The killings were discovered when the nuns didn't show up for work at the Lexington Medical Clinic, where they both worked as nurses caring for people who couldn't afford medical care, authorities said. A car missing from their home was found about a mile away, police said. Police have not released as cause of death in the killings. Rev. Greg Plata, who oversees the small church the nuns attended, said that police told him they were stabbed.

Jewish neocon says he might vote for Hillary Clinton

Former Bush administration official Paul Wolfowitz said that he is considering voting for Hillary Clinton in an interview in which he lambasted Donald Trump as dangerous. Wolfowitz, who was the deputy secretary of defense for President George W. Bush in the lead-up to and start of the Iraq War, said in an interview that while he isn't enthused about it, he may be forced to vote for Clinton. "I wish there were somebody I could be comfortable voting for," Wolfowitz said. "I might have to vote for Hillary Clinton, even though I have big reservations about her."

The 2016 presidential election will be the election where the Democrats say goodbye to the Scots-Irish vote

It will be the end of almost two centuries of ties that bind, but there is little doubt that Trump will sweep the Scots-Irish vote this election and the Democrats will fare worse than ever with them. From the time of Andrew Jackson in the early 19th century, the Scots-Irish had followed the Democratic Party. They found their hero in Jackson, founder of the party, a North Carolina native who was born just two years after his family arrived in the New World from County Antrim. The Scots Irish were descended from Ulster planters who had been sent to Ireland from Scotland for the plantation of Ulster in 1609. Many struggled in the harsh environment of Ulster and with the Catholic hatred of those who had taken their lands. America was opening up at the time and some 250,000 Scots-Irish planters and workers took the opportunity to reach the New World. Most arrived in Pennsylvania but later spread down through the Shenandoah Valley and all over the unpopulated south. Many took to the backwoods and became known as Hillbillies after their love for King William, who won the Battle of the Boyne. The great split began in the 1960s with the JFK/Lyndon Johnson Civil Rights laws which saw southerners deeply impacted by the leftward move of the party. Along came Richard Nixon to further feed the trend of conservative Scots-Irish moving away, and the South suddenly saw long-time Democratic senators like Strom Thurmond begin changing parties. As The Washington Post recently reported, “Today, the Scots-Irish form the cultural core of the white, Southern Republican vote that is being heavily courted by GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump – and energized by anger at the government and support for conservative stances on guns, abortion and immigration.” Even though Bill Clinton managed to win their vote, he was likely the last Democratic president who ever will. “It’s my culture,” former Virginia senator Jim Webb told the Post. “Few key Democrats seem even to know that the Scots-Irish exist, as this culture is so .... individualistic that it will never overtly form into one of the many interest groups that dominate Democratic Party politics,” Webb wrote. “The Republicans understand them.” Trump will win them over in huge numbers it seems certain, and the Democrats will likely bid farewell to a core group that once stood by them. Such is American politics in 2016.

Nelson Mandela's grandson has been charged with raping a 15-year-old in a toilet in South Africa

Mbuso Mandela, 24, has appeared at a Johannesburg court and will be held in police custody until he returns for a bail hearing, a police spokesperson said. He grabbed the girl as she entered a toilet at a restaurant in Greenside. After the attack, Nelson Mandela's second wife Winnie sent a bodyguard - who posed as a police officer - to the family's home to intimidate them. Another one of Nelson Mandela's grandchildren, Mandla, was convicted of assaulting a 40-year-old motorist during a road-rage incident earlier in 2016.

From 2005 to 2015, there were 1,070 homicides in the city of Milwaukee, with blacks being the victims 78% of the time and suspects in 82% of the murders

Hispanics were the victims 11% of the time and suspects in 10% of the murders; and whites were victims 9% of the time and suspects in 6% of the murders. Between the years 2006 and 2015, there were 5,122 nonfatal shootings in the city of Milwaukee, with blacks victims in 87% of the nonfatal shootings and also suspects in 87% of the cases. Hispanics were victims in 8% of the nonfatal shootings and suspects in 9% of the cases, and white people were victims in 5% of the nonfatal shootings and suspects in 2% of the cases. In the city of 597,867 people, Milwaukee is 40% black, 17% Latino and 37% white.

Based on the Obama Administration’s own latest available statistics, black Americans are worse off today than they were on Inauguration Day 2009

Real, inflation adjusted, median income among black households sank from $35,954 in 2009 to $35,398 in 2014 — a fall of 1.5%. Even more striking: blacks were the only group whose median household income fell over this period. Hispanics saw a 1.2% rise (from $41,973 to $42,491), Asians went from $72,340 to $74,297 (up 2.8%), and even non-Hispanic whites eked out a minimal 0.3% rise, going from $60,094 to $60,256. But black median income actually fell. In addition, poverty rates for blacks and Hispanics are considerably above those of whites and Asians. Black and Hispanic poverty rates moved in different directions during the Obama Years: 2009-2014. The Hispanic poverty rate declined from 25.3% to 23.6%, while the black American poverty rate rose from 25.8% to 26.2% in 2014 — up 1.6%. Interestingly, the white poverty rate also increased over this period – from 9.4% to 10.1%. Increased poverty among low-income working class whites undoubtedly fuels much of their enthusiasm for Donald Trump’s campaign. To the extent that Hispanic immigrants are displacing black Americans in the work force, a Trump Administration would do a better job of lowering black poverty than one headed by Hilary Clinton, who proposes to rush through “comprehensive immigration reform” — an Amnesty/Immigration Surge. In June 2016 the unemployment rate for black adult males was more than twice that of whites, and nearly twice that of Hispanics.

Finns are now genetically considered an independent population instead of a part of the European population, thanks to a recent study

A large team of scientists analyzed the genetic codes of more than 60,000 people from five continents in order to provide the biggest data set of its kind to the scientific community. The details of this study are already providing interesting insights, including the genetic difference of the Finnish population to the rest of the European population. The study analyzed mutations in the protein coding regions in the DNA, called exome regions. Different populations display different mutations on some of these genes. Limited genetic diversity within the Finnish population has been a previous fascination for scientists. The categorizing of Finns as an independent genetic population has broad implications for various branches of science. Genetic variations allow scientists to study and understand the functions of different genes. Medical biology and epidemiology (the study of health and disease in defined populations) especially rely on the study of genetics. Finns are an ideal population for gene mapping due to their genetic lack of diversity, called homogeneity. Gene mapping needs to be completed prior to specialized studies on specific genes. Population genetics are directly related to the study of history and evolution.

Chicago's per capita homicide rate climbed over the last decade, and the chances of an African-American being killed in the city spiked drastically, according to a new report

From 2005 to 2015, the city went from 17.3 homicides per 100,000 residents to a rate of about 18.8, according to a report from the Injury Prevention and Research Center at the Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. But the report held particularly troubling news for African-Americans. The rate for blacks in Chicago jumped from 36.1 homicides per 100,000 residents in 2005 to 46.5 a decade later. Other studies have shown steep drops in the city's African-American population in recent years, but crime figures remain stubbornly high in many largely black neighborhoods. Many see the uptick in gun violence as the result of police reducing their activity in the face of public criticism. The study found that homicide rates for white people have decreased in the past decade, from 4.4 homicides per 100,000 in 2005 to 2.7 in 2015. For Latinos, the number went from 10.5 per 100,000 in 2005 to 11.3 last year.

Black people in Britain are more than twice as likely to be murdered as white people, and three times as likely to be prosecuted and sentenced, according to a new report, which will claim that the life chances of young ethnic minority people in Britain have collapsed in the past five years and are now at their worst level for generations

One of the things that the report by the Equality and Human Rights Commission found is that since 2010 there has been a 49% increase in long-term unemployment among 16- to 24-year-olds from ethnic minority communities, compared with a 2% fall among young white people.

Jewish Power: Denounce "anti-Semitic" posts or we’ll threaten your funding, Jewish group tells University of Tennessee

The University of Tennessee-Knoxville (UTK) has tried to play down years of incendiary comments by members and leaders of campus Muslim organizations that were recently brought to light, citing their right to free expression. But it may have to respond more forcefully if a Jewish "civil rights" group, led by a former civil rights chief at the Department of Education, follows through on its suggestion that UTK’s federal funding is at risk for tacitly enabling a “hostile environment” against Jewish students. UTK “should look upon the situation as a teachable moment and … act as educators to remind their community about their shared values,” Kenneth Marcus, president of the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law, said. “[W]e are litigators,” and though a lawsuit isn’t the group’s first choice of action, it’s “always a possibility” should the university not take steps to quell "anti-Semitism" on campus, Marcus said. Canary Mission, a secretive watchdog group that compiles dossiers on students and academics it accuses of "anti-Semitism", claimed in two releases recently that it found dozens of problematic social media posts by current and former members of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and the Muslim Students Association (MSA) at UTK. Some of those posts incited or personally threatened violence, it has claimed. In response to the administration’s subsequent denials that the campus is infested with rampant anti-Semitism, Canary Mission and Jewish campus groups doubled down, demanding stronger denunciations of the “cesspool” created by the Muslim student groups. Canary Mission said that it found a “disturbing trend” of "anti-Semitic" behavior reflected in social media posts by SJP and MSA members, naming six in particular.

Pinchas Braver and Abraham Winkler, two Hasidic men involved in the 2013 unlawful imprisonment and vicious beating of Taj Patterson, a then-22-year-old gay black man, are now attempting to shirk their sentence

Braver and Winkler, who pled guilty to unlawful imprisonment in a plea bargain, were sentenced to only three years probation, a $1400 restitution payment and 150 hours of community service. As a condition of the plea bargain, the prosecutor recommended that their community service take place in a “culturally diverse neighborhood.” Instead, Braver and Winkler have told the court they want to do their community service at Chai Lifeline, an organization that exclusively serves the Jewish community. The beating, which took place in December of 2013, was particularly brutal. Five Hasidic men, some of whom were associated with the Shomrim “security patrol”, attacked Patterson as he was walking down a street in Williamsburg. They forced him to his knees, screaming anti-gay slurs, and threw him to the ground, where they stomped and kicked him until the driver of a B57 bus saw the attack and pulled over. The bus driver took pictures of the fresh wounds, which included a broken eye-socket and torn retina that left Patterson permanently blind in his right eye. The bus driver recalls Patterson writhing in pain, repeating “I can’t see…I can’t breathe.” Finally, he lost consciousness. In April 2014, police finally arrested Abraham Winkler, 39; Aharon Hollender, 28; Mayer Herskovic, 21; Joseph Fried, 25; and Pinchas Braver, 19, all of whom either were members of or had ties to the Williamsburg Shomrim. They were indicted on felony gang assault charges; the Brooklyn D.A. ultimately did not charge any of the five with hate crimes. Throughout the course of the investigation, two of the five — Hollender in 2014, and Fried in 2015 — had the charges against them dropped. In both cases, it was because a key witness decided not to testify. The remaining arrestees were offered a plea deal, and two of them took it. The deal leaves them with a much gentler fate than what they would face if they went to trial: up to 25 years in prison for their felony charges.

Kenyan hacked off wife's hands over his infertility

Domestic violence is a troubling issue in Kenya, and Jackline Mwende has recently become the very public face of it. The 27-year-old from Machakos, a village not far from Nairobi, says that her husband came at her in a rage with a machete and not only slashed her head and face, but also cut off her hands — all because their seven years together hadn't resulted in any children. Mwende says that her marriage to Stephen Ngila, who's said to be either 34 or 35, started out well but soon soured after they were unable to conceive. Those ill feelings only worsened when the couple visited a fertility clinic in 2014 and discovered that the reproductive problem rested with Ngila, not Mwende. It's then, Mwende says, that Ngila started drinking to excess and physically abusing her, yet local clergy encouraged her to "persevere" and stick by her husband. Ngila, arrested the day after the attack and in police custody until his trial on attempted murder charges, "threatened to shut [Mwende's] mouth for good" right before attacking her, her father said. Kenyan women in physically or sexually abusive relationships — 45% of those between the ages of 15 and 49, per Nairobi's Gender Violence Recovery Center — are often victims of impoverished lifestyles and an extreme traditional culture where everyone looks the other way if men get physical with their wives. Despite her ordeal, which has also left her deaf in one ear, Mwende is glad to be alive. "He thought he had killed me, but God is great," she said.

Britain: Police too scared to stop vote rigging in Muslim areas, damning report finds

The study, headed by Eric Pickles, found that authorities are not doing enough to stamp out bullying and religious intimidation among South Asian authorities during the lead up to elections. The report has even called for a dramatic overhaul of the electoral system, warning that the integrity of democracy is at stake. The Electoral Commission also came under fire for making the situation worse by encouraging the use of foreign language, with Pickles saying that it leaves the door open to fraud. Pickles was chosen by David Cameron to head-up the electoral fraud commission following the voting scandal in Tower Hamlets, East London. Former mayor of Tower Hamlets Luftur Rahman was relieved of his position after he was found guilty of corrupt and illegal practises. The report found that police were unwilling to step in because of a supposed fear of claims of discrimination despite one voter being told that he would burn in hell if he voted for the wrong candidate. Pickles, a Government anti-corruption champion, said that police did not act on tip-offs as they were too concerned about being pro-active on some issues because of potential allegations of discrimination.

There are no successful black nations

Nigeria, the most populous black nation on Earth, is on the brink of collapse. The machineries that make a nation exist, let alone succeed, have all eroded. A culture of incompetence, endemic corruption, dignified ineptitude, and, chief among all, destructive selfishness and greed has played a major role in its unraveling. The same, sadly, can be said for most other African nations. States like Zimbabwe, Cameroon, and Equatorial Guinea are farcical democracies ruled by men who exclusively cater to their interests and those of their clipped circles. Thus, it is no surprise that in the absence of any healthy black nation – in the midst of chaos, senseless wars, corrupted religiosity, violence, and economic collapse – African and Caribbean people leave home en masse. They beg on the streets of Greece, prostitute in the red-light zones of the Netherlands, and make up 40% of the migrants flocking to Europe. Be assured, the indignity will continue. Black activists across the world have adopted a culture of verbal tyranny in which they shut down any effort to reason or criticize blacks or black-majority nations by labeling such attempts as “racism” or “hate speech.” Thus, one can be certain that any suggestions that the black race may indeed need to do something to remedy their situation will not be aired — not by the terrified people of other races. And anyone within the black race who makes such a suggestion will be deemed weak and pandering or a sellout. Thus, no one will talk about the painful fact that most African and Caribbean nations have either failed or are about to collapse.

Black Lives Matter and Israel

A war of words has erupted between groups affiliated with the Black Lives Matter movement and pro-Israel commentators over the characterization of Israel in their policy document released recently. The policy platform titled A Vision for Black Lives, is a wide-spanning document that was drafted by more than 50 organizations known as the Movement for Black Lives. It goes beyond criminal justice and touches on many issues including education and economics. In the Invest/Divest section of the platform, the group criticizes the US government for providing military aid to Israel. “The US justifies and advances the global war on terror via its alliance with Israel and is complicit in the genocide taking place against the Palestinian people,” the platform says. “Israel is an apartheid state with over 50 laws on the books that sanction discrimination against the Palestinian people.” This characterization drew ire from pro-Israel commentators, and in the time since its release many have penned op-eds and statements condemning the movement. On his personal Medium page, the CEO of the Anti-Defamation League Jonathan Greenblatt wrote that, while he agreed with the majority of the document, he called the treatment of Israel “one-sided” and “unfair”. “We categorically reject the document’s criticism of the United States and Israel,” he wrote. “It’s repellent and completely inaccurate to label Israel’s policy as ‘genocide’.” Other groups such as the T’ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights and the Boston chapter of the Jewish Community Relations Council expressed “dismay” over the platform. The JCRC said that it could no longer support Black Lives Matter while T’ruah said that it will “insist on standing up for the dignity and safety of both Israelis and Palestinians”. Dream Defenders, one of the groups that wrote the Invest/Divest section, wrote a rebuttal to some of the criticism in which they stood by the platform. Several other pro-Palestinian groups have also come out in support. The description of Israel as an apartheid state is particularly contentious. Sari Bashi, Israel and Palestine country director for Human Rights Watch said that while apartheid does not have a specific legal definition, there are definitely laws that discriminate between Palestinians and Israelis in Israel. This is most prevalent in the West Bank. “The problem is that you have completely distinct systems of law that apply to Israeli settlers in the West Bank and Palestinian residents,” Bashi said. “Israeli settlers have a whole host of rights and privileges that Palestinian residents in the West Bank do not have.” Bashi said that, among other things, Palestinians are subject to military law in the West Bank while Israelis are subject to civil law, which is far more forgiving. The platform also drew criticism for its support of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. It called for an end to anti-BDS legislation being passed in a number of states. “This type of legislation not only harms the movement to end the Israeli occupation of Palestine, but is a threat to the constitutional right to free speech and protest,” the platform said. BDS is a movement started in 2005 that was inspired by the boycott of South Africa for its apartheid policies. It calls for supporters to boycott Israel in various ways, this includes businesses, academics, artists and more. Activists also call on universities to divest stocks and funds from corporations that are involved in selling weapons or profiting from the conflict. The movement has gained traction on college campuses in the United States, leading to many critics to decry the organization as antisemitic, and linked to radical Islam. A campaign was started to outlaw BDS, with several legislators putting forth anti-BDS bills, with the backing of prominent lobbyist such as Sheldon Anderson. Anti-BDS legislation has now been passed in more than 20 states. Rabbi Dan Dorsch, of Atlanta, outlined his disapproval for the movement in a piece for Haaretz. “The mainstream Jewish community – not to mention the leaders of the Palestinian government – reject the BDS movement as harmful to progress, discriminatory and antisemitic,” Dorsch said. The rabbi added that claiming the oppression of black people in America is linked to the struggle of Palestinians is “unquestionably shortsighted and will only undermine the credibility of the movement and the important cause of civil rights in America”.

According to a report published by the Institute for Policy Studies, the wealth gap between white and black Americans is $571,000

In other words, it would take a typical black family 228 years to amass $656,000 - the average net worth of a white family in 2013. That's nearly three lifetimes. For Latino families, the gap is slightly smaller at 85 years.

Polygamy must become a civil right in Italy similar to same-sex civil unions, which the country allowed earlier in 2016, a prominent Muslim representative has said

“There’s no reason for Italy not to accept polygamous marriages of consenting persons,” Hamza Piccardo, founder of the Union of Islamic Communities and Organizations (UCOII), wrote in a controversial Facebook post. “When it comes to civil rights here, then polygamy is a civil right. Muslims don’t agree with homosexual partnership and still they have to accept a system that allows it,” he stressed.

Orlando gunman's dad spotted at Clinton rally - he says that Trump has no solutions

The mustachioed man in a red ball cap standing behind Hillary Clinton at a recent rally in Florida might have seemed ordinary, but his appearance is getting quite a lot of attention. That's because the man, Seddique Mateen, is the father of Orlando nightclub shooter Omar Mateen. The elder Mateen, who once praised the Afghan Taliban on his own TV show, says that he attended the rally in Kissimmee as a member of the Democratic Party and feels that "Hillary Clinton is good for the United States versus Donald Trump, who has no solutions."

South Africa’s white minority has been warned that they face an “uprising” if they fail to make urgent economic reforms, ruling black politicians have said

South Africa is on a knife edge with 13 politicians murdered recently and the national broadcaster refusing to show images of violence fearing it will incite more attacks. One radical party has called for a Zimbabwe-style land grab of the estimated 80% white-owned land. There are also fears among the 1.6 million British community who have emigrated to South Africa for cheap living that they could be forced home. Following heavy defeats in the recent municipal elections politicians from the ruling African National Congress have spoken out against what they call “economic apartheid.” They are threatening to nationalize the mines and other radical reforms to win back the black vote. The ANC, which under Nelson Mandela was responsible for winning black people the vote and ending apartheid, have dominated elections since 1994.

Gays are destroying the Catholic Church in Ireland

Niall O'Dowd looks at the gay crisis plaguing the Irish Catholic Church in their main seminary at Maynooth:
There is evidence of gay dating sites being widely used, of cover ups reaching the higher echelons, of straight novices being shunned if they report any such incidents, of a heterosexual student fired when he reported two seminarians having sex in bed – the list goes on and on. There has been a gay culture predominant in Maynooth seminary for decades according to experts who know. Now Archbishop Diarmuid Martin has called it into the open. He stated about Maynooth seminary that there is an atmosphere of strange goings-on there. “It seems like a quarrelsome place with anonymous letters being sent around. I don’t think this is a good place for students,” Archbishop Martin said. As a result Martin has pulled his Dublin archdiocese seminarians out and sent them to the Irish College in Rome to continue their clerical studies.

A machete-wielding man shouting "Allahu Akbar" was shot and killed after wounding two police officers in the Belgian city of Charleroi

The assault occurred outside a police station in the center of Charleroi, which is about 30 miles south of Brussels. The armed man penetrated a secure zone and wounded the officers, who suffered deep cuts around their faces. One officer was transported to a hospital, the other was less seriously wounded. The attacker was shot by a third officer on the scene and died later at a hospital. Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel, said that he was closely monitoring the situation: "I condemn strongly the attack in Charleroi. My thoughts are with the victims, their relatives and police officers." A security perimeter was set up around boulevard Pierre Mayence. The Belgian capital has been on high alert after terror attacks killed 31 people in March 2016. Two bombs exploded at the Brussels Airport, and a third went off at a metro station. ISIS claimed responsibility for the bombings, which also wounded 300 people.

A new study has found significant associations between certain genes and depression – the first time such an association has been reported in individuals of European descent

“We’ve seen previous findings from this type of approach in an Asian population, but not in a European one,” said Ashley Winslow, a geneticist with the University of Pennsylvania and pharmaceutical giant Pfizer. The researchers compared whole genomes of individuals who had either reported a previous clinical diagnosis of depression or were currently under treatment for it, with those of individuals with no history of depressive disorders. The analysis revealed the existence of 15 regions in the genome that were altered in individuals reporting depression. The alterations were found in genes known to participate in the normal functioning of the nervous system or in its development. Some of these genes had previously been associated with other psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia, but never with depression. The study obtained the samples from customers of the genomic company 23andMe. Previous studies of this nature used samples from patients with a clinical confirmation of diagnosis, but in this case the individuals self-reported their links with depression, said Dr Winslow. This allowed them to collect a lot more samples. But too ensure that the results were valid, they only analysed samples from individuals reporting having been diagnosed with depression or being under treatment for it. For further confirmation, the results were tested in other clinically collected samples, with similar results.

Morocco's Hassan Saada was set to square off in the boxing ring against a Turkish competitor at the Olympics, but instead he'll be in a Rio jail

The 22-year-old athlete was arrested at the Olympic Village on charges that he sexually assaulted two maids (some reports have them listed as waitresses). The chief investigator in the case told reporters the women filed a report that he restrained and fondled them after asking them to come to his room. Saada is accused of shoving one woman against the wall and trying to kiss her; he's alleged to have groped the breast of the second woman and made obscene hand gestures. Police say that he lured them over by asking them to pose for a picture with him. Brazilian law allows a suspect to be held "for a long period" during a crime investigation.

The American Bar Association is considering a new bar-passage standard that some law school deans believe contradicts an existing clause on diversity and inclusion

The ABA will make a final decision in February 2017 on Standard 316, which requires all law schools “to prove that at least 75 percent of students in each class have passed a bar examination within two years of graduation.” Opponents of the proposed policy, however, argue that it conflicts with Standard 206, which states that accredited law schools must “demonstrate by concrete action a commitment to diversity and inclusion.” The Deans of several historically black law schools claim that the 75% bar passage standard threatens their very existence because “minority law graduates, whether at predominantly white law schools or [historically black colleges and universities], tend to have a lower bar passage rate than their white counterparts.” As such, they say, the new standard effectively punishes HBCUs, which have a higher concentration of minority students.

Add another problem to the catastrophe gripping Venezuela: women opting to sterilize themselves rather than bring a new life into the chaos

No government statistics on sterilization are available, but a social worker says that she sees up to five women a day who seek to undergo a tubal ligation. One health program's 40-slot "sterilization days" historically wasn't at capacity; now the waiting list is 500-strong. The skyrocketing cost of hard-to-find contraceptives is at the root. In a March 2016 report on the country's severe food shortages, it is explained that there are "two prices for everything" in the country: the government price (which requires hours of waiting in line, and no guarantee it'll be in stock) and the black market price, which is often 10 times higher. Contraceptives started getting tough to find in December 2014. A reporter went to a dozen pharmacies and found no condoms; women say that birth control pills are similarly absent, even on the black market. When a pharmacy has a 3-pack of condoms in stock, it costs roughly 600 bolivars; the current monthly minimum wage (a combination of money and a food ticket) is about 33,000 bolivars. For ordinary Venezuelans, those prices are out of reach, and with abortion illegal except to save a mother's life, there are few options. A 38-year-old mother says that a pregnancy announcement used to be joyous news. "Now when a woman says 'I'm pregnant', everyone scolds you. It makes me sad for young women."

In a retrospective study analysing patients' medical records, researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital found that patients' race significantly affected their longevity by increasing the likelihood of death after receiving androgen deprivation therapy (ADT)

ADT was used to reduce the size of the prostate to make a patient eligible for prostate brachytherapy. Konstantin Kovtun, MD, a resident at BWH, Anthony D'Amico, MD, PhD, chief of Genitourinary Radiation Oncology at BWH, and colleagues, analyzed the medical records of over 7000 men from the Chicago Prostate Cancer Center who had low or favorable-intermediate risk prostate cancer, 20% of whom were treated with ADT in order to reduce the size of their prostate gland to make them eligible for brachytherapy. They found that African-American men who were treated with ADT had a 77% higher risk of death when compared to non-African American men, the causes of which were not due to prostate cancer. "When African-American men were exposed to an average of only four months of hormone therapy, primarily used to make the prostate small enough for brachytherapy, they suffered from higher mortality rates due to causes other than prostate cancer than non-African American men," Kovtun explained. "This leads us to believe that there may be something intrinsic to the biology of African-American men that predisposes them to this increased risk of death and that this deserves further study." ADT is an antihormone treatment that lowers a man's testosterone level, and been used to reduce the size of the prostate and in turn make the subsequent brachytherapy treatment possible. This team of BWH researchers is the first to observe the negative effects of ADT in the context of racial differences, specifically comparing African-American men to non-African American men after adjusting for age, comorbidities such as heart disease and established prostate cancer prognostic factors.

Black woman becomes first female most wanted gangster

The newest most-wanted gangster in Houston is a black woman who stands barely five feet tall. Tangelyn Cavitt is the first woman named as Houston's most-wanted gang fugitive as part of a law enforcement effort that began four years ago to spotlight dozens of suspected criminals. Cavitt, 27, is a member of the 52 Hoover Crips. She will be featured on stophoustongangs.org, a website coordinated by local, state and federal agencies. Her face will be plastered on the web as well as on digital billboards surrounding Houston as part of an appeal to the public to share her whereabouts via tips, which can be anonymous and yield rewards. Cavitt is wanted for aggravated assault. Court papers on file at the Harris County District Clerk's office contend that Cavitt attacked her mother in late July 2016 over a custody dispute after showing up uninvited to a family function in Houston. Cavitt is accused of not only hitting her mother in the face, but of grabbing two kitchen knives and charging at her while yelling that she was going to kill her. "While she may be the first female we're featuring on the Stop Houston Gangs fugitive list, unfortunately, it is not uncommon for women or young girls to associate with gangs or become involved in criminal gang activity," said Special Agent Shauna Dunlap, of the FBI Houston Division. The gang is known for using blue or blue and orange belts and bandanas, according to law enforcement. It also uses the Roman numerals V and II as well as a six-point star, a three-point crown and a pitch fork pointing up. So far, 79 persons named to the Houston's Top Ten Most Wanted Gang Fugitives List have been captured.

An American woman was killed and five other people injured in a stabbing attack in London’s Russell Square by a Somali man who was arrested after the incident, authorities said

Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said that the woman who died was a 60-year-old American, and the five injured people are British, American, Israeli and Australian. Two remain in a hospital, while three others have been discharged. The suspect migrated to the United Kingdom in 2002 at about five years old. Police put more officers on London streets after the incident, which came just days after authorities had warned the public to be vigilant in light of attacks inspired by the Islamic State group elsewhere in Europe. Knives are the most common murder weapon in Britain, which has strict gun-control laws. There were 186 knife killings in the year to March 2015, according to government statistics — a third of all murders. In the last three years London has seen two knife attacks by people inspired by radical Islam. In May 2013, two al-Qaida-inspired London men killed off-duty soldier Lee Rigby in the street near his barracks. In January 2016, mentally ill Muhiddin Mire tried to behead a London Underground passenger, shouting that he was doing it "for Syria." The Russell Square incident came within hours of an announcement by London police that they were putting more armed officers on the streets. The idea was to sustain public confidence following attacks by Islamic State-inspired groups in Europe.

Police arrest 900 Syrians in England and Wales for crimes including rape and child abuse

Shocking police figures released for England and Wales have shown that nearly 900 Syrians have been arrested in just one year. And officials say that the migrants were accused of sickening crimes including rape and child abuse. Now critics are concerned that the thousands of Syrians entering Britain each year under resettlement schemes are being allowed to enter the country unchecked. Among those arrested are four Syrian immigrants have been charged after two 14-year-old girls were sexually assaulted - just yards from Newcastle United's stadium. The British Government is working to resettle up to 20,000 Syrian refugees in Britain by the end of the Parliament in 2020, under its Syrian Vulnerable Person Resettlement scheme. Official statistics show that 1,602 people had been resettled in Britain under the scheme by the end of March 2016. According to Parliamentary research paper it is possible for Syrians to claim asylum upon arrival or after-entry to Britain.

Black people are more likely to die from the most deadly type of skin cancer, scientists claim

Although white people have a higher chance of developing skin cancer, patients with dark skin are less likely to survive. Patients of African-American descent were more likely to be diagnosed with melanoma once it had spread - making it harder to treat, researchers found. But experts said that this didn't explain their findings, as they also had the worst survival rates for every stage of the disease. Melanoma - the deadliest form of skin cancer - can appear anywhere on the body. It often spreads to other organs in the body, making it more deadly. Researchers studied nearly 97,000 patients diagnosed with melanoma between 1992 and 2009. Although white people had the highest incidence rates, they also had the best survival rates. Hispanic patients were second most likely to survive the deadly disease, followed by Asian Americans, Native Americans and Pacific Islanders.

Britain: A drunk black woman went on a furious rampage through a convenience store where she threw stock on the ground and racially abused staff

The suspect, described by police as a large black woman in her twenties, became angry when shop workers at the Fresh Go in Bethnal Green, east London, said that she was too drunk too be served. CCTV footage of the incident saw the woman launching a tirade at the Asian staff members. After swearing and shouting racial abuse, the woman blocked the door preventing customers entering and leaving the store and demanded to be served spirits. When staff still to refused her booze, she continued to verbally abuse the employees and threw stock at them as they were taking a delivery, wrecking the carefully-stacked pallets before walking off.

A case in Afghanistan has pitted a religious figure against the outraged parents of a 6-year-old girl, underscoring the ongoing problems surrounding child marriages there

Sayed Mohammad Karim, a mullah in the Ghor province said to be in his 50s, has been arrested and charged with stealing the young girl away and marrying her — allegations he denies. "The girl was given to me as a gift and we were married so I could raise her," says Karim, who notes the girl's parents attended their wedding ceremony. But that's not what the parents are saying, per the deputy police commander of Ghor. "We spoke to her parents and they strongly deny they attended the wedding," he says. "[They] told me their daughter was kidnapped." Complicating things are the sticky rules governing child marriage in Afghanistan: The country's civil law says a girl has to be 16 to be legally married, but citizens may also follow Sharia law, which has been interpreted to allow children to be wed. These early marriages can pose dangerous health hazards for young girls: Human Rights Watch — which cites a 2010 mortality survey that says 53% of Afghan women ages 25 to 49 were wed by the age of 18 — notes that early marriage means early pregnancies, which can cause injury and even death if their bodies aren't ready for childbirth or if they're in rural areas with sub-par medical care. But such "gifts" are common in the country's remotest regions — not only girls, but also cash, property, and livestock — to curry favor with local religious leaders. Perhaps the only bright spot in this story: Karim insists that he didn't have sexual intercourse with the little girl, which a local doctor says appears to be true. But despite the doctor's assertion that the "examination showed that the girl had endured no physical or psychological harm," the head of the Ghor women's affairs department says: "This girl does not speak, but only repeats one thing: 'I am afraid of this man.'"

Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef says that according to Jewish law some non-Jews should be forbidden to live in Israel

“According to Jewish law, it’s forbidden for a non-Jew to live in the Land of Israel – unless he has accepted the seven Noahide laws,” Rabbi Yosef said. Non-Jews who fail to live by the seven Noahide laws should be expelled to Saudi Arabia, he added. If a non-Jew stays in Israel, he has to serve the Jews, the Rabbi said. “Who will be the servers? Who will be our assistants? Therefore, we leave them here in the land,” he said.
