A Moroccan Muslim immigrant who drunkenly brutalized a young nurse in the ladies' room of a Hell's Kitchen pub has been sentenced to 16 years in prison after trying to weasel out of his guilty plea

With his victim, her husband and baby in the courtroom, Mbarek Lafrem tried to withdraw his guilty plea to charges of assault and attempted sex abuse, but was quickly shot down by Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Ronald Zweibel. The North African immigrant was so drunk during a March 2010 visit to Social Bar & Grill that he claims he doesn't remember trying to force himself on his victim after following her into the bathroom at the Eighth Avenue bar and slugging her in the face. The savage beating left the pediatric nurse with a broken eye socket, a shattered nose and a fractured skull and jaw. Lafrem was facing up to 25 years in prison if he had gone to trial and been convicted on an attempted murder charge. He instead pleaded guilty in July 2011. Lafrem, who has been in the United States six years and has a green card, could now be deported upon completing his sentence for the vicious sex attack.
